Quote from Sirius's article above....

"Some MPs were said to have argued that the new rules banning mortgage claims meant they had been forced to let out their second home in order to be able to afford the mortgage and other costs."

Simple answer, "Sell it then if you can't afford it for your not using it to
live in"

46 out of 650. We need to get it in proportion, but the media and tabloid press just look for shock horror headlines to stay in business.

WHY?

Forget your hatred of the tabloids, it should be 0 out of 650, don't you agree & if not WHY?

WHY?

I won't bother to answer that, no need.

Forget your hatred of the tabloids, it should be 0 out of 650, don't you agree & if not WHY?

As I have commented many times before, This is not PMQ, neither is it a court of law in front of a Judge and Jury, and you are not a counsel for the Prosecution. Therefore I have no obligation whatsoever to reply to you. But you will only fret, sulk, and stamp your foot unless I do. So for the sake of peace and quiet around here I will say this.

Of course all 650 MP's should be squeaky clean as a matter of principle, but it is very naive in the least to expect otherwise. When you look at France, Italy, Spain, Greece, the USA etc when have any of them been upholding the standards that are supposed to be expected from those in public Office and in receipt of public funds? I find it quite incongruous that somebody who chooses to live in England, yet takes great pleasure in denigrating the whole fabric of the society they live in, posts in the way that you do. In any other country, you'd be put on the first plane home.

Ah, so you condone: - Child abuse, sex gangs, fraud, abuse of power etc etc. Why don't you come straight out & say it: -

You're against all that denigrates your "Glorious British Empire".

As for the 1st plane home: - Just who do you think created your Empire? The English on their own?

Don't be be so ridiculous and melodramatic, you're worse than a pantomime dame! You can goad, troll, and bait me as much as you like, it won't have any effect.

No need to goad or troll - Have politicians liked & abused "little boys"? Yes or No?
Have politicians & their cronies committed sexual harassment & worse? Yes or No?
Have bureaucrats covered up massive child abuse? Yes or No?
Not something to be ashamed of I would have thought.
That shows your way of thinking more than anything I can ever say.

Pretty much yes, we and the Scots certainly sorted out your homeland.

Plantations

"Plantations in 16th and 17th century Ireland were the confiscation of land by the English crown and the colonisation of this land with settlers from England"

& you did the same with the US. Whatever happened there?

Yep, it certainly does. Got a problem with that?

Nope, just confirms that you're still living in 1715 rather than 2015 :-)

Q. Have bureaucrats covered up massive child abuse? Yes or No?
A. It is beginning to appear that a small number have, yes.

The fact that it was covered up for 16 years slip your mind?
No matter though, you've publicly admitted those incidents occurred.

Does not bode well for politics as a whole, so wonder why they bother begging us for our vote as they'll continue on their merry way regardless of how we vote.

Oh & we built railways to enable those who didn't want to dirty their hands to travel in comfort. Also if you had us build that canal in New Orleans rather than the Royal Navy, you might have won the war (as Panama shows) :-)

The Battle of New Orleans

"Preparations for the attack had floundered early, as a canal being dug by Cochrane's sailors collapsed and the dam made to divert the flow of the river into the canal failed, leaving the sailors to drag the boats of Col. Thornton's west bank assault force through deep mud and left the force starting off just before daybreak, 12 hours late."

How many of these pledges will actually come to fruition?

Joey Essex interviews Nick Clegg who stated he does not believe that the Lib-dems will win this election. Joey does highlight a point that many have been saying for sometime...

...nobody trusts politicians to keep their word anymore.

Depressing stats :-(

1944 & 1972 stats from Gallup with the 2014 stats coming from the government themselves.

Is the party over for Britain's mainstream politicians?

Sirius will reply I have no doubt, but don't take one graph as being truly representative of the whole of the current situation. It is just a part of it.

What Agenda would that be Mr Lib-Dem local branch secretary?

It is a Fact that many perceive politicians to be only in it for themselves.

Gallup

YouGov

Have you written to those companies ridiculing their polls? After all, isn't that what polls are for? To gauge peoples opinions?

I believe the key word there is "perceive"

Why I wonder, perhaps it could be the fact that in 1944 you just had newspapers to get the news and form your opinions, by 1972 you also had TV and politics brought into peoples homes, but still mostly on the news and special programs.

Now you have wall to wall 24 hour news available to everyone anywhere, with live reports on TV, you phone your tablet, and of course online 24-7, with 24 hour news come the need to have stories to fill 24 hours.

So these stories are brought to you by a media who in the last few years has show to be as untrustworthy as the politicians in the poll.

Remember a politician who is a decent, honest, hard working family man, is not news, so the media have to dig.

I don't actually believe politicians are less honest than they were in 1944, I just believe we now know more than we did 70 years ago.

Have to agree with that. Unfortunately that in itself raises an important question: -

Whose fault is that perception? The Electorate or Politicians?

Neither, it is the Media.

So the media forced politicians to: -

Fiddle their expenses
Abuse "little boys"
Cover up their mistakes

The fact that we are all human and no one I have ever met is perfect.

We want our politicians, police, judges, and most importantly the reporting news media to be honest and truthful 100% of the time, sorry but in my experience 75% is a good day. There are decent people out there, but they are just not interesting to the masses, the scandal, and dirty deeds are.

When I see the growth of reality TV in this country it worries me.

Do the populous really care?

I just wonder?

Bread and circuses.

I agree with Sirus. This was an excellent post, Chris. Much of what you say is directly applicable to this side of the Atlantic as well. And the rest, with suitable changes in terminology due to our different political systems rings true as well.

Excellent analysis of the situation in both of our nations.

So how to change things?

Personally I believe politicians have to realise that they have to be "squeaky clean".

They have to be above fiddling expenses and trying to earn "a bit on the side". All parties have to stamp down on corruption wherever they find it.

Mass media and the internet has made politics more transparent than ever before and they have to realise that.

Politics is not and never should be and "easy ride"

As has been said no party can ever deliver all it promises but it has to make the people believe it will try.

All the parties have to have our trust before we can move forward positively.

Watching UK election debate. Where would Britain be without people from other countries? Poor, boring and declining. But few dare to say so.

Guess who said that? A hint. He's a Swedish politician:)
