I love television, and watch quite a bit, but I still have three old cathode tube sets, from 27 inches, down to about 21 inches, and they do just fine.

The trouble is that so much stuff is recorded and broadcast in widescreen 16:9 format these days, and most DVD's, that watching it on a CRT 4:3 aspect set as a letterbox image is tedious. If my old CRT set hadn't hadn't died on me I would have stuck with it as simply good enough. But having made the leap to more modern stuff then yes, it has made more of a difference than I would have expected.

Yet it was only mid-range expensive, and it was also an updating exercise and an investment in future proofing. All I can suggest to anyone that has an older set, 4:3 or wide screen, CRT or earlier flatscreen, is find a friend that has a modern 40-50" Smart HD set and go watch theirs for an hour. You might find yourself thinking differently.

My sound bar upgrade wasn't strictly necessary, but I had the money and thought, well everybody is saying get one, I'll do it. No point having a high performance car and sticking petrol at 95 RON unleaded in it, when it works best at 99 ron super unleaded. But personal choice I accept.

My GPU card can handle 4K resolution but it is still connected to a 27 inch HD flatscreen. I still use a 11 year old 27 inch CRT tv to wach satellite with. Maybe in 5 or 6 years I may have something different. Until then, this is it for me. Just look and think of the goodies I would like to have.

I'll stick with what I have for a while, no need to upgrade.
