Every once in a while, I hear my mother's voice saying "Daaaa-viiiid..." I usually take it as some sort of warning and wake up, although I have yet to find anything after waking up to be warned about. I understand that when this project first started it was known as STI - Search for Terrestrial Intelligence, but gave up after a remarkably short time, having determined it would be a futile process. :))))))))) Hi Alison :) So nice you stopped in to say hello :) You'll fit in fine here too I reckon, but I will definitely mention your planet to my son :) he's like you... brilliant :) edit: as to the project - yes... once intelligence was ruled out on earth, apart from dolphins etc who know better than to talk to us, we're now looking elsewhere - and it's good to have you helping with that :) |

Duh....we are supposed to be looking OUTWARD. There has been ample scientific proof that no intelligent life exists here. At least not in Washington, DC. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

But, aside from Hortas, Xindi Aquatics, and the odd shapeshifter, we've never seen anything in Trek that didn't follow the same basic form as us, and I can't believe that's realistic. True enough. But even then, there are some general rules laid down by evolution, I believe. * When on dry surfaces, legs are useful. * If you have legs, they better reach the ground. Your mass to gravity ratio determines where they are best attached to your body to maximize their usefulness. * If your size to weight ratio permits and there is an atmosphere, wings aren't a bad thing either. * Having stereoscopic vision or echo location is a good thing for a predator. * Having all round vision and good hearing is good in any case. * Eating what you can see, smell or otherwise "inspect" may avoid eating the wrong thing. * You don't really care what happens on the other end of your digestive tract, unless ... that's when you need strong legs back there. * In all intelligent life forms on this planet, the brain is the most energy consuming and best protected organ. * Let your imagination carry on from here. One or more of the above criteria shape almost all the life forms inhabiting the surface of our planet. And for intelligent ones, they all have their food intake close to the majority of their sensory input (eyes, ears, nose) and since sensory input is so important as well as it's transmission so vulnerable, their brain is located very close. Or is it the other way around? There are exceptions to those rules, but you really need to go below the water level to find many of them. That is where our planet has alien life. Moral of the story? If there are extra terrestrial, intelligent beings, that have evolved (big if), then I think it is most likely they are the product of a very similar evolutionary history. They most likely have something like a brain. They most likely have some sort of sensory inputs close to that brain. They most likely have some extremities to manipulate things and so on. Will they look like humans as in Star Trek? Nope, probably not. I think they will look a bit less human than a grasshopper does. And judging by the above criteria, a grasshopper looks almost like a human. Has all the same features, plus wings. Almost human plus wings = Angel. No? |

If we keep going like we are then insects are the next terrestrial-life iteration. Sea life->amphibian->reptile->mammal->cockroach? *Puts foil hat back on and sits in corner* |
