I buy a certain amount of things on Amazon. And see little to entice me to buy into a premium program. Unless I want or need something pronto, I find that Amazon offers free standard shipping on a large percentage of what I wish to buy. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

FWIW, tigerdirect.com has its own version of the "pay us money to join and you'll get free shipping" thing going. I did it one better today, now that they've added an option for store pickup. But the other three things I ordered today weren't available at my local store and I didn't feel like driving to Orland Park, so I had them shipped. Well... apparently, their computer only checks to see if it's available in the retail store. I could have saved myself the shipping charge by going there and asking for everything to be pulled from the warehouse. Yes, you guessed it, my order was shipped from the warehouse right here, not five miles from my home. Not right, but what can you do. Amazon to start collecting Illinois sales tax Amazon.com will start collecting sales tax from Illinois shoppers starting Feb. 1, the e-commerce giant said Friday, in compliance with a new state law. The law, which went into effect Jan. 1, requires out-of-state retailers to collect Illinois' 6.25 percent use tax if they fit certain criteria. The deadline to comply was extended to Feb. 1 to accommodate the busy holiday shopping season. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/ct-amazon-sales-tax-illinois-0124-biz-2-20150123-story.html |

Not right, but what can you do. Gotta make sure my boss heard about this. The accountants get VERY snippity when we use taxpayer's money to pay taxes. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

As far as I know, ALL states have required sales taxes to be paid on out of state purchases. Wisconsin always has. I have always just 'paid tribute' by sending them a hundred bucks or so on my income tax return for what I bought online. I do not keep records, so it was always estimated. But I try to be an honest man, so I send the bit to the man. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

As far as I know, ALL states have required sales taxes to be paid on out of state purchases. Wisconsin always has. As a citizen of New Hampshire, I pay no sales tax for online purchases. I only pay a sales tax if I travel out of state to purchase in person. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

Yes, but they gouge you when it comes to other taxes. Let me just mention one.. Property taxes Here in San Bernardino County CA, the property tax rate is 1% and the amount one pays is based on the sales price after an automatic deduction, My house has has an accessed value of $27,000.00, now there is an automatic deduction of $7,000.00 that makes the value for tax purposes $20,000.00, so I end up paying $200 a year, this is just for the mobile home, since as of yet I don't own any land to go with the mobile home, though that could change after 2017. But I digress. Sales tax here is 8% in this County, the sales tax varies all over California, in one area where Newegg is located at, Newegg charges 7.5% sales tax, I think Newegg is located in Orange County CA. Now what do I do on items that have been bought without paying sales tax? Nothing, since I'm not allowed the luxury of filing any sort of income tax form, there is nothing I can do, the legal mechanism just isn't there. And yes I pay sales tax every time the tax is charged, it's just part of doing business. Unlike where Newegg is at We have 0.5%(Measure I) out of the 8% devoted to road repair and road construction projects in San Bernardino County, this is a voter approved Sales Tax add on of course. Yes, but they gouge you when it comes to other taxes. Let me just mention one.. Property taxes LOL, who do you think, I was thinking of. Still $2,700+ plus here and sales and use tax, gas, cigerette etc pp. The break I get is no water or sewer bill and the repairs are covered. Free Street Lights. The biggest hits are the Schools and their bonds. If I understand the law right, I might be able to opt out in a decade or so. I think when all is said and done, we all pay the same amount. Just some states are more open then others. Your Job,is to know the laws of the State you live in or in my case the Country and State plus the your Native Country. Expats in any Country should look this up. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Okay, I got my school Amazon account set up to be tax exempt. Illinois has always (well, for many years, anyway) had a use tax for out of state purchases. There's even a place on the income tax form for you to add use tax that you may owe. I never figured I owed enough to bother with. What changed is that they now require out of state sellers to collect it. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

The USA is made up of 50 separate states, with separate laws, customs, and histories. Not at all surprising..... |

It just amazes me that the USA has these ridiculous rules about taxes and out of state taxes. In the UK we have one single tax. It used to be called Purchase tax, but they renamed it to VAT, Value Added Tax. That was just an excuse of course to bring more items into the tax bracket. When you are a Chancellor you have to raise money somehow, and by the back door if necessary. If you put the US tax code in paper form it would be a stack of papers 10 feet high, printed on both sides. Yes it is a bit ridiculous. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Some wrongly like to assert that Taxes are Theft, even though Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution says Congress has the power to 'lay and collect taxes', some in this country want a free ride, even though they can pay their fair share of taxes. I would never suggest that our taxes are theft, only that the tax code is much more complicated that it needs to be. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

Some people are trying to put in a voter referendum option here in Kentucky that would allow individual cities to create a temporary additional sales tax to fund certain agreed upon local civic projects. I also just read about a rogue mistletoe drone at a TGI Friday's restaurant. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |
