Still intrigued at the use of the letter O with umlaut as an island ....

Happened to come across this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/04/15/minnesotas-great-umlaut-war-is-over-also-minnesota-was-having-an-umlaut-war/.

And coming to think of it, how come in English the symbol "I" refers to a word?

The long answer.
In linguistics Omljud, "umlaut" (from German "sound alteration") is a sound change whereby a vowel is pronounced more like a following vowel or semivowel and is also used to replace hyphens in Germanic languages. The term umlaut was originally coined in connection with the study of the Germanic languages — except from Gothic — where the process occurred prominently in the history of many of these languages (see Germanic umlaut).

The short answer.
It's more easy to use Omljuds then try to spell Diphthongs.

And Ö (Island )is the general name for Holme, Kobbe, Skär, Klippa...
Perhaps Ö looks like three islands:)

And "I". Must be a lazy viking who came up with that:)

Short Words for animals.
Lo Lynx.
Ã…l Eel.
Ko Cow.
Bi Bee.

I thought chipmunks were part of the squirrel family.
Gophers are related to moles.

Regardless of how you do it, the little animals
are going to notice what is done to them. In the
next province over from us they vacuum them out of
the ground. Oh, there is no catch and release program!

Depends. If the gopher is near a exit. Or it might not make it out at all. Just be careful the exit is not the hole the hose is in.

What happens if you turn your hose on and stick it in a
gopher hole? Will it chase out the gophers? I imagine it
would only be a temporary fix, though.

Just curious.

No. They are even words here.
For instance:
Ã¥ is a small river.
ö is an island.

I thought it was only the Far East that used symbols for words?

HeHeHe.
I told you the old norse was very pragmatic.
Do you know how long time it takes to carve runes or cut runes in stone?
From the beginning we didnt have wovels. Like ancient Egypt.
Later we learnt that wovels was a good thing.
But only a few languages have lots of diftongs, France, Britain?
Beaucoup, eau :)
Eau means water in Frensh. Here it could mean Ã….
But why so difficult Spelling rules in English and frensh?
In Italian.
For instance Ceasar should and are pronounced Kaisar not seesar:)
And Chianti are pronounced Kianti.

The letter O with umlaut appears in the German alphabet. It represents the umlauted form of o, resulting in [œ] or [ø]. The letter is collated together with O in the German alphabet. The letter also occurs in some languages that have adopted German names or spellings, but is not normally a part of these alphabets. In Danish and Norwegian, Ö was previously used in place of Ø in older texts and to distinguish between open and closed ö-sounds. It is also used when confusion with other symbols could occur, on maps for instance. The Dano-Norwegian Ø is like the German Ö a development of OE, to be compared with the French Œ.

In other languages that do not have the letter as part of the regular alphabet or in limited character sets such as ASCII, O-umlaut is frequently replaced with the digraph "oe". The letter Ö also occurs in two other Germanic languages: Swedish and Icelandic, but it is regarded there as a separate letter, not as an umlauted version of O.
