It is more like to how reduce the growth of CO2 emission. China is trying. |

Population growth is not as hard to stop as people think . You only have to look at so called 1st world country's to see they have the problem of not having a high enough birth rate , as a country 's population get richer people make the choice not to have kids for the life stile and governments are having to come up with ideas to lift the birth rates . It's mainly backward country's that still over populate and that will slow as they get wealther . |

Here in Québec, we will put on roads a mixture of sand, salt and calcium on black ice. For few seconds the ice will melt. But after 1 minute, it will freeze back again. JC |

So you have to have chains all the time then to be safe by the sounds of it . And not do what Cal did drive at 75 miles per hour that's dangerous on normal roads let alone in snowy conditions or cold weather . |

For few seconds the ice will melt. But after 1 minute, it will freeze back again. Not true. Salt melts snow and ice down to -18 degrees Celsius and dont freeze back. Preventive salting is an extremely effective method. It means that small amounts of salt or wetted salt are spread on the road just before slipping occurs. One can foresee slip through various surveillance systems. |

For few seconds the ice will melt. But after 1 minute, it will freeze back again. There are places in Canada where the air temperature is frequently below -18 degrees Celsius. In some conditions salt can make it worse as it allows the pressure of the vehicle weight to melt the ice because it has depressed the freezing point, where if there was no salt the vehicle weight would not provide enough compression to melt it. Water ice physics is interesting stuff. http://www.pa.msu.edu/sciencet/ask_st/112091.html Oh, why can this person from sunny Southern California talk about black ice? Well, Los Angeles has ski resorts. http://www.mthigh.com/ We aren't all palm trees. And there are times of the year when it is possible to go snow skiing in the morning and ocean surfing in the afternoon. |

For few seconds the ice will melt. But after 1 minute, it will freeze back again. Now you are skating on thin ice:) That vehicle weight would provide enough compression to melt ice and snow is not true. I have never seen water or ice formation under the tires when a car is moved from a parking lot. Scientists have found it difficult to explain the phenomenon that everyone knows; that ice is slippery. The traditional explanation is that the ice melting point drops, when subjected to pressure. What they mean is that when a skater gliding on the ice, the ice will melt a very thin layer, so that he actually moves on the water. But the pressure of a skate affects almost nothing for the ice melting point. According to a recent theory, it is not the pressure but instead the friction that makes ice slippery. The friction between the skate and ice heats up the ice locally, so that it momentarily melts. Although this theory may be wrong too. It does not explain why one can skate on ice without moving your body. Indications of "slipperiness" rather is a property that is built into the ice. According to the professor of chemistry at Lawrence University, Robert M. Rosenberg, the top layer of water molecules on a frozen surface behaves differently than the molecules that are bound in ice crystals. In contrast to them, the molecules on the surface vibrate, since there are no frozen molecules above them that will keep them stationary. The theory is that the vibrating molecules that make the surface slippery by behaving as a fluid. |

Cal you where very lucky . 75 miles per hour man what where you doing going that fast in snowy conditions ?. Someone upstears was watching over you that day for shore. The big problem with black ice is that it happens on roads that look clear of any ice, or snow. Yes, 75mph in winter is very common here. |

As long you have the right tires for the weather condition you will be alright. But Black Ice is dangerous... A few years ago I experienced black ice in Stockholm. The whole city was paralyzed. Neither cars or buses got a grip on the road surface. |

So you have to have chains all the time then to be safe by the sounds of it . Glen chains are not a good answer for black ice, proper tires such as Bridgstone Blizzaks or less desirable studed tires are the best current technology. |

Here in Tennessee they can't even drive safely in the rain. If it were raining at 5:00 PM during the drive home from work (15 miles) I could count on seeing at least 5 wrecks. Most of these were caused by Bubbas in their pick-up trucks who liked to tailgate you at 75 Miles per hour wet or dry. As long as you have good tires and an uncluttered road, 100MPH is perfectly safe on a not-too-curvy stretch of Interstate Highway. I like to drive fast in open, lightly travelled and lightly patrolled Interstate highways especially when I have hundreds of miles to travel that day. When there is rain or snow on the highway I slow down and, as always, maintain a wide interval between myself and the car ahead of me. Stupid is as stupid does. |

Right, speed is always decided by road conditions. Glenn what are the fines or speeding in your country? I would have thought that with all those long good roads you have down there, that speeding would be common. |

About Black ice and the icy road, a road engineer from Transport Quebec just confirmed me that on asphalt road in QUEBEC, it is proved that at the temp. of -12 C is roughly were salt water freezes, so the snow melts and almost immediately re-freezes, which can create "black ice" conditions, and hence make the roads extremely slippery. I am awaiting a copy of the Government (Transport dept.) report about this. So, a salty road is not so secure especially when the temp. is -30C like now. |

The fines are steep and depending on how fast your over they can take your license away from you on the spot . We have Double demerit point long weekends and you can lo longer go over 100 klm any where they got rid of the unlimited speed signs years ago and the camera's everywhere ggggrrrrrr it's why i bought a G.P.S so i know where all the dam speeding camera's are even in the freaking country they got them and yes speeding is we are told a problem , fatigue , distance and road conditions .....na put a dam camera that will slow them down , bloody all it is , is a revenue raser the money is not spent on bettering the road |
