No, it is a thin layer of frozen frost which does not easily reflect light hence the name "black ice" bad stuff for traction. |

ow chaines not to effective then . The seasons are getting shorter and more intence in winter , ergo : colder and summers are getting longer and more intence ergo : hotter super cold air or hot air ergo : -50 to 40+ C is very dangerous But no worry's mate you keep digging that oil tar sands we need the cheap oil to flow for our economy's , ergo till i die then who give a F i'm gone |

Black ice is a condition Glenn that happens along the Great Dividing Range from Stanthorpe in Queensland all the way south into Victoria and in Tasmania and is the main reason for roads being closed during the winter here in the high country (not snow as some think and has nothing to do with oil). ;-) I also keep hearing this stuff the last few years as it being the hottest on record, but I've yet to see any evidence for it here as it's actually been cooler and wetter instead. Cheers. |

Wiggo your to far south and up in the clouds mate to see the effects that much .There's been a bad drought up in the west of Queensland and where i am Warragamba is on it's way down so for all the rain we have had not much has been getting into the dams . That is the problem with Climate change one area may still have very little effect and another area not to far away will have a big effect . I dought you will see high temp anyway up in the high country mate no matter how hot it is at sea level You see the same effect where the mountains a very high not like our blimps but in places like the andes or the Rocky mountain , snow on top of the mountain but down in the valleys it's 35 c , all you have to worry about is the sky falling in (ozone layer) at that altitude |

Actually Glenn I'm just 62kms from the Queensland border and most of the 241mm of rain we got here last month came from those drought affected areas of QLD. ;-) Cheers. |

Sorry wiggo i thought you lived down south you in the glass house Mountains then ! Still being so far north again you won't get the temps getting to high as your to close to the tropics so 38 is tops with the odd 40 1 or twice a summer and if you up on the mountains you defenatly wont get 40 temps . |

oh ok i get it now . Supercooled rain is rain that has a temperature below zero degrees Celsius. When the drops hit the ground or other objects it freezes quickly to the so called Glaze ice. It gives a very difficult slippery road, often called black ice since it's very difficult to detect. Supercooled rain sometimes occurs when warm air comes in over colder air areas. Rain formed in the warm air falls down and passes through the air layer with freezing temperatures near the ground. Despite freezing temperatures the water is liquid in the droplet, ie, the water becomes supercooled. It occurs especially when the water is very clean with no pollution or particles as ice crystallization can occur around. When the raindrop hits the ground, there are lots of crystal formation points that crystallization can start at and the water freezes to ice quickly. It has become quite common here in Scandinavia because of the warmer climate. It causes many car accidents and broken legs. |

Yes Jan i know how it's formed just wasn't shore what Cal was on about Black ice in Alberta near where the oil tar sands are !! Does salt help or just make things worse by making it all slushy ? |

Yes Jan i know how it's formed just wasn't shore what Cal was on about Black ice in Alberta near where the oil tar sands are !! Yes, but Black Ice occurs suddenly and there are lots of roads to salt. And it takes time for the salt to have effect. I have only seen that they are salting highways. Another problem with the warmer climate is often the formation of icicles on roofs. Even fatal accidents happens when they fall down on your head. |

Just a short aside for my warm weather friends. Black ice will kill you! Way back in 1974 I came as close as I ever knew to losing my life on the road from Ottawa to RCAF Trenton in Ontario. There is a lake called "Round Lake" that is the world's largest lake that has no islands in it. Going south west, I found myself doing 75 miles per hour when I realized that I was on black ice. My car had no traction and the only reason I am still here is because I was lucky! I had started my family, so I guess God thought I should hang around for a while. The ice forms on the hard top and most times you can't see it. You have to know how, where, and when it can form, so you just have to be on the ball for all the months that it can exist and drive accordingly. Here endeth the lesson |

Since it will take Thousands of years to reduce what we have already put into our Atmosphere (we have already done the damage): I do not think you have to reduce CO2 emission already done. It is more like to how reduce the growth of CO2 emission. How that is possible I dont know. CO2 emission and climate warming will also lead to Methan emission which are 20 times more worse per volume. Not so much deforestation perhaps... |

It is more like to how reduce the growth of CO2 emission. One way that will work is reduce population. But no one wants to talk about measures that will work. |

You hit on a good point Janne. If it was not for all the innocents that get killed by tail-gating, they would save on the use of petro- chemicals after they kill themselves off. As for tar-sands, as I have said before: "It looks like dark red dirt." It is not all black and messy. |
