Is there some way to throttle down the GPU usage like there is with the CPU settings?
Perhaps the Bionic makers can add this function in the next version?

Thanks.

The CPU throttle function also works on the GPU, because all GPU applications run through the CPU.

There won't be such a function added to the next version of BOINC, but maybe in some future version of BOINC. Until that time you can use third party applications such as EFMe'rs excellent Tthrottle.

Apropos, anything in the range of 60-70C isn't really hot but fine operating temperature for a GPU.

I would suggest TThrottle for Windows machines.

,sorry.

Installing another program to correct the cheap coding in the first one makes no sense to me.
Then i will end up with a lot of programs using more power correcting each others mistakes.

Thanks any way.

the cheap coding...

Such a comment shows that you either haven't got a clue what you're talking about, or that you think that you can do much better.

I already told you that the CPU throttling function will also throttle the GPU. This is because BOINC does not use an operating system's API to set sustained throttling, e.g. you set it to 70% and the whole time BOINC only uses 70% CPU. No, in this case, BOINC will run the science application at 100% for 7 seconds every 10 seconds and then suspend it for 3 seconds, thereby dropping the overall temperature of the CPU.

Since all GPU applications run through the CPU, suspending work on the CPU will also suspend work on the GPU. The CPU takes care of translating data into kernels the GPU can read, and to transport these kernels to the GPU's memory. The GPU runs the kernels, stores their outcome back in its memory, where the CPU picks up the results and transports them back to the memory of the PC. It then translates the results into something the humans can understand and writes that to disk.

As you can see, a lot of the work is thus done by the CPU and therefore as soon as you suspend the CPU, all that translating and transporting will not be done, thus work on the GPU will cease to be done as well.

So, not being able to use sustained CPU load is also cheap coding then?
No, it's done this way so that when you compile the one source code of BOINC on any of the 'default' platforms out there (Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OSX), that you can do so without building errors due to a part of the client depending on a special API that's only available in one of the operating systems.

Tthrottle, the program we pointed to, can use the APIs in Windows (registry) to run with sustained maximum temperatures on CPU and GPU. You'll therefore find that the program only runs under Windows, not under any of the other platforms.

Your simplest option is of course to go to the project preferences, edit those and uncheck "Use NVIDIA GPU". That way all work presently on the GPU will run to completion, but no new work will be downloaded for the GPU. But at least it'll be cool then. But best not play any games then either, seeing how Anandtech tested Crysis 3 at 83 Celsius.

As also said, you can increase the fan speed on the GPU, but for that you also need an external program. Probably cheap coding of the CMOS code in the BIOS of the GPU, ey? Anyway, in that case look at programs such as AsusTek GPU Tweak and MSI Afterburner.

Lastly, you can go to the source code download page, get the source code, fix the cheap code parts, fix any other mistakes you find along the way, then build your own BOINC and come show us the result.

I did not mean this program in specific, i just men all programs in general.
If one program don't do what you want you don't get a other to correct it.

I DO know what I'm talking about, I am a electrical engineer and i program machines all day long in Mitsubishi or Siemens PLC, Binar, SatControl, Jokab/ABB Pluto, e.t.c.

I recommend downloading an app that would check for the CPU's temperature; if it exceeds the limit you could suddenly find your motherboard malfunctioning and the hard drive losing the data suddenly. Be ware and take backups of your data!
Please refer to IGCSE Past papers website that intends to help high school and college students for free in the UK. It also has Edexcel and AQA Physics A Level Papers.

If you are having a heating problem wouldn't reducing cpu usage in your preferences help. I've been running at 100% for quite some time. I don't know what my temperature is because I have no monitor installed.

I should have looked before I posted that last message. Could you recommend an app.

Norton Internet Security found malware in TThrottle and removed it, twice. Thanks but no thanks.

Norton has move false positives than you can shake a stick at. Get rid of it (if you can. It's as hard to remove completely than most viruses). Anything is better.
