My weight remains status quo lately although I wouldn't really know because my scales still need new batteries...

I don't know if you all have White Castles down there, but they have really small steamed burgers. Probably still calorie bombs, but you need to eat a lot of them to add up to one normal sized fast food burger.

There are No White Castles or Papa Johns near here, but then just like Burger King or McD's, I wouldn't go to one if they did exist. Carl's Jr or Jack in a box yes, though I've not been to one in years.

You're not missing anything special, imo, but some people crave 'em.

Much tastier and bigger though. :~) White Castle's have holes in them to allow the steam to escape during cooking.

I've seen White Castle "Sliders" in the frozen food cases of most of the grocery stores in my area. Never had them, but see them everywhere.

I also prefer fresh-cooked burgers - Wendy's or Jack-in-the-Box are my favorites, but Burger King or McDonald's, or a local walk-up will do.

It's not just that they're steamed, they're steamed on a bed of slivered onions. The term Slider originated with White Castles, although lately it has come to refer to any small burger. WCs are much smaller than anything else out there. I usually eat one in two bites, maybe three.

They are also known by various other names, such as belly bombers or fartburgers. There's a guy I know on the net (but have been ignoring for years now) who has a long list of other names; he lives in WC's headquarters city, Columbus, Ohio.

Like other fast food places, I actually like their breakfast the best of all their products, although their sausage patties are a tad spicy for my taste. For breakfast, I typically get one bacon egg and cheese, and one sausage egg and cheese, on a bun, which is the same bun they use for their burgers (and chicken and fish sandwiches).

Okay, I'll stop being pernicious now.

Re: White Castle - vintage raccoon footage circa 2007

Oh my. I wish I had time to read the whole thread.

Regarding the comment there about WCs' shelf life. When you get them fresh from a restaurant and put them in the fridge, they WILL dry out rather quickly. I generally do not buy more than I can eat in one meal. (Having restaurants nearby, I have never felt the need to buy the frozen ones from the store, so I can't comment on them.)

If you like onion rings, I highly recommend theirs. I also like their fries better than any other fast food place too (they're about equal with Portillo's, but that chain is mostly a Chicago area phenomenon). I tried the new onion chips once and they went through me as fast as the burgers are reputed to (but came out much more recognizable).

I'd say their chicken patties and rings are slightly better quality than McD's or BK's equivalent. Right now they have shrimp nibblers back as a Lent special. I don't observe any Lent-related restrictions, but I do kind of like their shrimp nibblers. I also like Wendy's fish and wish it wasn't a Lent thing.
