Thanks,
Well next time, there I go again, I'll have to look at Sapphire.

I had a temp as high as 76C which bothers me a little.

My GTX 590 temp is 88-90c for now over 7 months =)

Merle,

You are using Precision X? If so, did you customize your fan curve? What is the max temp on the curve so you get 100% fan usage? You can also set your target temp for the GPU in Precision X and it will throttle back when it hits that as to maintain that max temp. I wouldn't go as high as those 80-90's C. I think the max listed is somewhere near 90 but you are asking for trouble up that high. I would try to stick around 68 max if you can. You can push it higher but then you have to look at the trade offs.

Precision X works with ATI cards now?

I was hoping that it did work. As there does not seem to be as many tools for customizing non NV hardware. I am not sure if MSI Afterburner or Sapphire TriXX give fan remapping options.

Slightly happier bunny tonight -- I received a parcel from China today for my birthday present, a new fan for my Gigabyte GT 640 DDR5 card which was/is my secondary GPU in my home PC. It cost all of £GB1.78 with free posting! Re-assembled the card at lunchtime and replaced it tonight. It's now purring along on two AP tasks, with a temperature of 72 C at 80% fan according to nvidia-smi; the main Asus GTX 660 Ti is using 27% fan at 63 C (the 640 is in a single-width end slot with only 5 or 6 mm clearance between the fan and the bottom of the case).
When the original fan failed, the 640 would gradually rise to 102 C before shutting down...

I use MSI Afterburner on my MSI and Sapphire cards, it does allow you to design a custom fan speed profile, but if you have more than one card, it uses the same profile for both, AFAICT (but not that I've dug too deeply into the options, I just use the fan profile mostly...).

I moved my now headless computer with the hd r7 265 that ran a bit hot into another room facing a north wall and now the temp high is about 73C. instead of 76C. On average it runs at 71-72C. This is using the auto fan adjustment. So with the headless (teamviewer)now working and the fan cooler, I am a happy camper. Thanks

I have just added a second 780, MSI same as the first, and started crunching. The upper card went from 70 degrees (before SLI) to 80 degrees. The lower one temps is around 70 degrees.

Time to do some research about those temps, before I start tweaking the fans profile on the GPU cards. Anyone with 780 SLI setup? each card is running 3 WU's.

MSIAfterburner is the shiznit....
I use that for my cards, works great...

I ran 3 EVGA 780 SC with ACX and hope by the end of the day to do so again (rebuilding today). The MSI looks the same as the EVGA with ACX. The problem with those cards is the removal of the hot air. Half of it goes out the back, the other half going 180 in the opposite direction. So that mean 1/2 leaves the case, the other half goes back in the heart of the case. I was getting the same Temperatures. At first I thought it was due to poor air flow but after discussing with other came to realize that I need more fans to pull that hot air out of the case. Ended up flipping a lot of fans on my case and adding 1 huge 200mm to the side panel to blow cool air over the 3 780s. The front of my case has 2 140mm's that used to pull cool air into the case right over the front of the 780s. I ended up flipping the direction, now those 2 140's pull the hot air coming out of the front of the 780s out of the case. On the top of the case I have another 2-140s pull the left over heat up and out of the top of the case as well. There is 1-140s at the back of the case that was to move air out of case, I flipped it and now it pulls air into the case from the back of the case (not directly over the exiting heat of the backends of the GPUS). Last, I tweaked the fan control. I run 3 work units also. I set max temp to 75C. 100% fan at 70C. Once it hits 75C it slow down the top GPU to maintain that temp so it runs at 1.02GHz, with GPU2 and GPU3 run at 1.12GHz but the temps on 2 and 3 never get near 70C. Hope this helps.

Happy Crunching...

I notice nobody has mentioned the blessing/bane of my new crunching, the
GTX 590. I got it as a hand-me-down gift, and while it sucks power like a
Dyson, it does manage to crank out decent numbers. It also doubles as a
space heater, which should be interesting when December rolls around. When
I first started its new career, it was running about 100C each side. I quickly
pulled it and took a look at the heat sink. Sure enough, it looked like the filter
on a Dyson!!! I cleaned it carefully, and now the thing runs at about 86-91C flat out.
This still isn't good for the long haul, but I am planning on replacing it with a Kepler or
Maxwell based card that doesn't cost arms and legs to run.

...nobody has mentioned it because of its thirst for power, and tendency to run (very) hot.
In terms of performance it is about equal to a GTX970, but uses nearly three times the power - such is progress.
I notice that the GTX690 which was the performance and power consumption king (most consumed) for a time has just about equaled by the GTX980, but with a quite substantial reduction in power demand.
(Looking at the raw figures has made me re-think how I'm to rebuild my ailing cruncher...)

I already have the following setup:
- intake: front (23cm), side (23cm), top (12cm)
- exhaust: back (14cm), top (23cm) and the two fans on the H100i radiator (also top, both 12cm)
- I can add another intake in the bottom, 14cm, but PSU cables would block most of it, so I've removed it few months ago.

I modified the profile of the gpu fans using MSI afterburner. Now the top one is holding at 73 and the bottom at 63. I'll keep it overnight and check in the morning. Already left it for few hours and came back to find it frozen (blank black screen).

The heat coming out from the case is much higher than it used to be. The noise is much more noticeable as well.

Chris!

Can't hear ya'. Your fans are too loud.
Could you turn 'em down a bit.

Personally I won't run any video card above 70C, and preferably no more than 60C. Only had one die on me in all these years.

Only suggestion I would make is seeing about reversing the front 23cm so it removes the exhaust head from the front of the GPUs. Then you can see if that helps to keep those GPUs cooler. I'm assuming that side 23cm is blowing air over the GPUs? Experimenting with the design is the only way to tell for sure.

I've actually had success reversing the side fan to help draw cool air through the GPU's from the front of the case and get rid of the heat buildup from around them. ;-)

I'm not all that sure about that top fan being an intake though.

Cheers.
