Max temp for getting the normal life out of a video card?

I have heard 67C. from one source. Any other opinions? I generally buy new ati/amd cards. |

Depends on the GPU Cooler is always better A good New card should have a good fan and then it should not get above 58 c on a hot summers day if the normal air temp is 35 c . I would not run a card if it's getting above 70 C A lot of cards can be fine at 75-80 but that is getting risky to have it at that temp 24/7 as most will burn out at 90 > or get temp sensitive at above 80 c meaning they start to give errors current card is GTX 650 Nvidia air temp 23 c , card 48 c fan 52% , min speed of fan with air temp of 12 c , 50% , card temp 40 c Good cards with big heat sink and a big fan should not have any problems these days |

Don't know about ATI, but my GTX750 usually is somewhere between 48 and 63 degrees with the fan running between 34% and 37%. I have never seen the fan running higher then 37%, so I guess the temperatures are ok. My old card (the mighty G210:-)) was running a bit more on the hot side, AFAIR it usually was around or slightly above 70 degrees when crunching. It wasn't running 24/7 (neither is my current card) but I never had the feeling that those temperatures are too high. The old card still works today but was just too slow and had to be replaced. |

my MSI 780 TF usually idles around 48C and while crunching it gets to 68C, sometimes 72C while gaming. All running in OC mode using the gaming app that's provided by MSI. On the card's website, MSI claims that the capacitors have a life span of 10 years on 85C, and 18 on 75C. So I consider 75C to be the limit on my card, I wouldn't worry while temps are below that. Finally summer is almost over, room temperature is between 30C and 35C. What's the ATI card, and which brand is it? Have you checked your manufacturers website and datasheets? |

Thanks Michel, Both of the cards I'm concerned about are MSI, so your message hits right on the spot. (7770 and r7 265) --edit I went to the MSI website but didn't find anything about temps for my model #'s. |

It seems that the r7 265 has the military class components, same capacitors as the GTX 780. From that perspective, I would assume the same values. I've checked some benchmarks and while gaming it is usually around 60C. I don't know about ATI, but if MSI has an application for overclocking your card, you might want to try it. I've had lower temperatures with OC mode on my 780. As for the other card, I am not sure. I would say anything below 80 should be fine for both cards, you might want to consider 75C as a soft limit, to be on the safe side. What are your current temps while running seti? how many WU are you running on each card? MSI Afterburner is a good tool for GPU, you might want to check how your fans are behaving as well. |

I only run one task at a time. The temps are 58-64C. The fan on the r7 I leave at 100% since it runs fairly quiet. The 7770 fan is usually around 70%. I think Hal told me to only run one task at a time on my cards, if I remember correctly, but it was kind of hectic back then. You get the problem where the gpu's get slowed down by those heavily blanked tasks and have to rely on the pace of the cpu's. |

For these range cards it is probably good to run only 1 AP at a time. If the non blanked tasks are keeping the load up pretty high more than 1 isn't really a benefit. Also when mixing GPUs you either have to setup for the slowest one or run multiple instances of BOINC. I leave the fan on my HD6870 on auto. On a hot day with the windows open the fan spins up to about 55% from 40-45%. While keeping the GPU at the same temp as when the A/C going is on. I would have to check the temp logs but I think it stays well under 60ºC all of the time. I leave the fan on auto to hopefully get as much life out of the fan as possible. Thanks for the comment on the fans. I wasn't sure how sturdy the fans were. I burnt out a 4670 doing collatz/boinc and it was probably running the fan at 100% all the time. |

I'm getting too hooked on this stuff. I just bought a dell with a r9 260 as my graphic card and I just swore the other day I wanted out of the dell hook up. But I saw this pretty little thing for a nice price and I just had to do it. Didn't even have a choice. That's it, no more stuff. |

When I left my r7 265 on auto, I had a temp as high as 76C which bothers me a little. |

Hal, Given the options for the fan on the GPU are auto or a single fixed speed I use auto. Then the fan runs at the percent specified by the card manufacture. There are probably apps to tune the fan speeds at various temps. Like I can do with my MB for the CPU and chassis fans, but I haven't bother to go that route. I recently bought a 2nd 6870 off of ebay for $40 to put in my HTPC. That card runs a bit warmer than the one in my gaming machine. I am seeing up to 74ºC with the fan running around 60%. I tested various manual settings in the HTPC to see how much of an effect they would have. At 100% it would drop to about 62ºC, but at that point the fan noise is rather terrible. Anything over 75% I didn't care for in the way of noise. I'm OK with the temperature of the GPU. So long as it runs without generating errors. I may try turning the fan speed down and let the temp go up to see at what point it will generate errors. Then I will have a good measure of "this is to hot". Next summer I may swap the 5750 back in the system or get a newer more efficient GPU to keep the noise down for that system. Because I don't want to try and watch a movie over the sound of a jet trying to take off in the living room. I will also add that all of my cards are from Sapphire. Who has had a reputation for making quality cards since the days of ATI building their own cards. I think they would be the ATI equivalent of EVGA. If that makes sense to you. Agreed HAL. My Sapphire 7970 VaporX is on auto as well. It doesn`t get above 62°C. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |
