Thanks for the reply's

I found out that on a single cpu machine with 64meg I could no long download wu cos of a change to boinc - "increased memory resource bound to 64M". No problem downloading on the dual cpu machine with 128meg but since it runs 2 seti sessions I guess the 64 meg limit/seti client applies.

Since this machine is a boinc only setup I dident wish to shove more ram in than necessary. Off to ebay for another stick of ram i guess . . . .

Paul spotted it out, RAM becomes cheap (today)

The minimum hardware requirements for win nt4 is 64 MB. Without applications, without communication (internet!), with out all, just the nacked operating system.

*my* compaq Pentium 120 is working fine and extrem stable with 48 MB(!) of ram.
always suffering from to low REAL memory. But I do not crunch with it, guess to slow. But I manage the farm with it.

On a multi cpu system, like yours, every CPU has a own demand of memory, in addidion of the demand from OS+apps. A rule I have seen, is at least 512-1024 MB RAM per cpu.
Yes, per cpu. (The cpu where amd 2400 MP)

But this was for business, on a DB Server, a while ago.

An additional memory stick can give you, depending the mainboard possibilities,
a double of possible memory bandwith (2 channel modus).

In theory on your MP system, the single finishing time should not differ so much.

(RAM Speed settings as short as on the other board?)

Depending on OS, you need (usually) at least 256M, 512 is better and a full Gig (or more) is best.

With memory being so cheap I never get less than a gig, and most likely my next store bought (Mac G5) will probably start with 2 Gig this time (and a couple other bells and whistles).

Oh, and I talk about this in the BOINC FAQ ... also the Glossary.

128 MB Ram on a NT Systen is good, i think

Seti uses only 16 MB for every CPU...

Hi, Just a quick question about the amount of ram needed for a dual cpu system. I found out the other week that 64meg of ram was now two small for a single cpu system.
I have just put together a dual intel 933 intel (matched, not celeron) with a gigabyte board and 128 meg ram (win nt4). One of these cpu's managed a boinc wu in about 8.2 hrs when in a single socket 370 motherboard.
In a dual config its taking between 12 - 13 hrs /wu. Not so hot. Its the first batch of wu downloaded.

The question is does a dual system need more that 128 meg of ram?. Anybody else had this problem?

Thanks
