Maybe a bit off topic, but, using Metric threads in aluminium alloys has always been problematic - a BSW thread is far superior. I've never had a BSW thread strip in alloy, but loads of metric ones have!

Iona is 100% correct, and as a fully indentured 5 year Apprentice Toolmaker, and later 3 years as an Improver, I can confirm that from my own experience. It is of course down to the thread profiles and depth of thread.

Whitworth = 55 Degree thread angle, depth of thread, 0.640 Pitch
Metric = 60 degree thread angle, Depth of thread 0.614 pitch

Whitworh was designed for heavy engineering, and the BSF version for finer engineering had a similar thread profile, but more threads per inch (TPI). Metric threads seem to be a halfway house between BSW & BSF. The Americans used UNC and UNF with also a 60 degree thread angle and a depth of thread of 0.625 pitch. Suffice it to say both the UK and the USA had heavy/coarse and fine threads, the Metric system was an attempt at a one type suits all thread.

The rest of the World uses Système International d'Unités, SI.
And toolmakers today I Believe are not using Engelgrades, Redwood secunds and Saybolt seconds when talking about viscosity.
A centiStoke however is comprehensible which is 1mm²/s in SI units.

Exactly, they used a base 10 system cos they could only count on their fingers or their toes. We of course being British were rather more cerebral at using weights and measures. The SI system also operate the backslapping game where a lot of their units are named after various scientists.

Having said that, of course any self respected precision engineer knows what turning to 1/2 a thou means, and grinding to a tenth. We were using base 10 where it mattered when that lot were storming the Bastille!

But never fear, for us REAL engineers you can still buy drills in 64th's Rule Britannia!

For any transport company, be it public or freight, the company must have a CPC which is a requirement in obtaining an Operators Licence without which, the company cannot operate.

2008/9, the EU decides that every driver must have one! WHY? a full HGV driving license shows that competency, so why the need for a 5 year dCPC?

& a comment from our Transport Secretary...

According to taxi drivers, the law did exist. The 1831 London Hackney Carriage Act made it an offence for drivers to feed their horse unless it was from a bag of corn or with hay from their hands. The law was repealed in 1976.
