VK, former Vkontakte (Russian: Вконтакте, 'In touch'), is Russia's largest social networking site. VK is the second most visited website in the Russian-speaking part of the Internet and had in 2013 about 80 million active users, more than half of Russia. Early in 2014 sold the founder Pavel Durov its ownership of the company, and in the spring he was forced (by his own admission) away from VK, as part of the political pressure on it until the independent network company.

Maybe a bit off topic, but, using Metric threads in aluminium alloys has always been problematic - a BSW thread is far superior. I've never had a BSW thread strip in alloy, but loads of metric ones have!

It's his favourite word of the year Janne, which is why he earned his own Sirius & Nick show.

Unfortunately his partner in crime jumped ship.

LOL. More grumpy old men.

Iona is 100% correct, and as a fully indentured 5 year Apprentice Toolmaker, and later 3 years as an Improver, I can confirm that from my own experience. It is of course down to the thread profiles and depth of thread.

Whitworth = 55 Degree thread angle, depth of thread, 0.640 Pitch
Metric = 60 degree thread angle, Depth of thread 0.614 pitch

Whitworh was designed for heavy engineering, and the BSF version for finer engineering had a similar thread profile, but more threads per inch (TPI). Metric threads seem to be a halfway house between BSW & BSF. The Americans used UNC and UNF with also a 60 degree thread angle and a depth of thread of 0.625 pitch. Suffice it to say both the UK and the USA had heavy/coarse and fine threads, the Metric system was an attempt at a one type suits all thread.

UK threads

Them foreign lot never liked our system because they never understood those
halves, quarters and eighths thingies we used.

Remember Billy Fury and his hit, " I'm only halfway to paradise"
They had to re-write it and with a new title too, became, " I'm only 0.5
way to paradise"...I don't think it sold over there too well either.

The rest of the World uses Système International d'Unités, SI.
And toolmakers today I Believe are not using Engelgrades, Redwood secunds and Saybolt seconds when talking about viscosity.
A centiStoke however is comprehensible which is 1mm²/s in SI units.

Rule Babylon:)

The Babylonians, who were famous for their astronomical observations and calculations (aided by their invention of the abacus), used a sexagesimal (base-60) positional numeral system inherited from the Sumerian and also Akkadian civilizations. Neither of the predecessors was a positional system (having a convention for which ‘end’ of the numeral represented the units).

Exactly, they used a base 10 system cos they could only count on their fingers or their toes. We of course being British were rather more cerebral at using weights and measures. The SI system also operate the backslapping game where a lot of their units are named after various scientists.

Having said that, of course any self respected precision engineer knows what turning to 1/2 a thou means, and grinding to a tenth. We were using base 10 where it mattered when that lot were storming the Bastille!

But never fear, for us REAL engineers you can still buy drills in 64th's Rule Britannia!

'ello Nick :-) Wondered if the carrot was juicy enough! How you doing?

Musn't grumble.....though the carrots are a bit off, must be out of season.

At last the politicians are waking up! Professional drivers knew this 5 years ago!

Driver shortage due to dCPC - courtesy of the EU

CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)
For any transport company, be it public or freight, the company must have a CPC which is a requirement in obtaining an Operators Licence without which, the company cannot operate.

2008/9, the EU decides that every driver must have one! WHY? a full HGV driving license shows that competency, so why the need for a 5 year dCPC?

& a comment from our Transport Secretary...

"Six weeks before Christmas, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin urged people to 'get their shopping done' in case the driver shortage hit the supply of food and presents.

He defended the new EU rules, arguing that drivers need to know how to drive their lorries properly."

Simple answer to that Paddy me boy...raise the HGV minimum age back to what it was, 21

It was not long ago when the trunks in taxi cabs in London had to have a certain size.
It was an old law that said that the trunk must have room for hay to the horse:)

I am pretty sure that is an urban myth. Can you substantiate it?
Black cabs

No. It's seems that the cab drivers in London have spread it:)
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17610820
According to taxi drivers, the law did exist. The 1831 London Hackney Carriage Act made it an offence for drivers to feed their horse unless it was from a bag of corn or with hay from their hands. The law was repealed in 1976.
