I'm running a Notebook with Core i3-3110M (DualCore w/ HT), an NVidia GT 720M and the integrated HD4000 iGPU since a few days. I've set it up to use both GPUs and one logical CPU core for crunching, which seems to yield pretty much optimum overall performance. Since it got very hot with both GPUs exceeding 80deg C, I placed it onto 4 spacers that give it about an inch of free space beneath it - and have a pretty good USB Fan blow right beneath the bottom. Not ideal but for this weekend of testing/tweaking a suitable makeshift solution. Basically and especially with GPUs being used for crunching as well, getting a good active laptop cooler of some type is absolutely mandatory. The notebook cooling systems really aren't made for 24/7 100% stress. ![]() |

Been thinking about a mobile device. Funds are sparse, yet I should be able to stay in touch. Not interested in a cell phone. Something portable is doable. Pluto will always be a planet to me. ![]() Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

I am running all Apple products but my laptop was purchased in 2006 and still functions great with the SETI web site and email. It is a bit slow on other websites. Most likely you can get a used PC laptop that would fit your needs. If you want to access other web sites you may want to stay with something more current that has more horse power. If I need to do something computer intensive, I use the tower because that's what it was made for but because I am on call 24/7, my laptop needs to be able to do everything the home system can but I can live with the speed limitations. |

Uli, You havent stated what size your looking for, Or what you would use it for. But I like my Kindle fire HD. I wont crunch with it but its small enough that I can take it any where and stay conected to the internet. I believe They are about $180.00 US new. ![]() Old James |

Or what you would use it for. Without knowing that, it's not possible to offer any usefull suggestions. You may not want a phone, but a phablet my be the way to go, or a tablet, or a netbook, or an ultrabook, or a laptop, or a desktop replacement unit. Grant Darwin NT |

Are you referring to a non-PC device? I normally think of PC as a desktop or notebook/netbook. With mobile being a phone or tablet type of device. Does the device need to have an "all day" battery life. So you only have to charge it when sleeping? SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours ![]() |
