An apostrophe replaces other letters with a single character to save the space of two words. e.g. in "that's correct", it replaces the letter i, to save printing that is.

The apostrophe in o'clock replaces "f the". o'clock means "of the clock." it stems from the time when not many people could afford mechanical timepieces.

Years ago, a friend in Germany sent me some Emmentaler cheese, and it didn't handle the journey well. Let's just say it aged a little too much. :~(

Well both laptops that arrived here yesterday have now left so I've got enough already for a few good beers at the pub once I've finished my job down at the industrial park.
