Vic. I missread your statement to say that you coulndt pay your bills beacuse you needed to but whatever. You finally explained why later on it the thread. Now I get it. You like to crunch just like the rest of us and be in the forums. No problems with either one. But Im sure most of us here have had a cruncher die. I have had two die. But what you need is to get a daily driver that just only pays your bills online. No crunching allowed. Only bill paying and getting to a Seti forum. Then when your done it gets powerd down. We all know that Crunching Seti does tend to work a computer over. You must have enough parts to throw together a simple daily driver. Hopefully, you getting that fan running will cure the problem. Vic, if all you need the PC for is paying your bills on-line then you DO NOT NEED all the fancy extras like a big power hungry GPU, massive PSU, water cooling multiple fans and so on. What you do need is a simple PC that is stable, connects to the internet. In the UK such a PC would cost you LESS than your proposed case and PSU (using UK prices) and would run "forever", using less electricity than your bloated monster. Hey Vic, Yeah, I'd just have to drive to Barstow 12 miles away, that's the closest. The PC has been running stable. My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Hey Vic, If it works out that things aren't repaired in time for online bill-paying, your local library has computers where you can make those payments. I've done that. CC |

I found I had a Delta fan that wasn't working, the fan uses a 4 pin dell connector with a white wire in place of yellow(tach signal) and a blue wire(pwm), I redid the connection and the fan is working again. It's Dell's idea of a pwm connector, one of these days I need to get a yellow marker and mark that white wire yellow. The fan is connected to a radiator on the Zotac Infinity that looks like the rad is 1/2" thick, 2 high speed fans just to get the card down to 69C at 797MHz, the card is flashed with an EVGA bios that I was told is better than the original Zotac bios, more stable I was told. If I wanted a cheap backup pc I'd just have to buy a 950w psu(160mm long and no more, as it's a small case HP made, cramped in fact) Why? That just came off the top of My head, Me thinking ahead most likely, in any case I really don't need the power of another computer at the moment, though some of those 6way splitters might help, 2 of those are $21.90 delivered, that will make the fan connections more reliable, I'll have to put 2 of them on the list, I've got 2 pumps(3 with the 570) and 6 fans(8 with the 570 again) and those fan power connections can be finicky, I had one fan actually stop, I restarted the fan and I had a wire hitting the blades of one fan, making the wire a bit more taught fixed that, plus 2 wire ties to keep the wires bundled keeps the inside somewhat neater in appearance and that's better for airflow. Ok I fixed the fan power problem, all fans and both pumps in the case are now directly powered by the psu, I'm not having any problems since I added a 3pin power adapter and moved two 3 pin fan splitters. If I wanted to hook up the GTX570 I'd need a 6 way fan splitter like this one made by Phobya: My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

If I wanted a cheap backup pc I'd just have to buy a 950w psu(160mm long and no more, as it's a small case HP made, cramped in fact) If all you wanted was a cheap backup PC why would yu need a 950W PSU? Most low end budget pc's come with 350-400w PSU's and work perfectly well. and an extra hdd, since I have an old HP AMD MATX system w/a pci-e 1.0a slot, the only problem is none of My current video cards can be used since the case doesn't support fans bigger than 80mm and they don't really support pci-e 1.0a. But like I said it's old. If as you have told us, all you actually need is a PC to get on-line to pay your bills then why would you need to fit a 3rd party video card? The onboard video would work perfectly well. Why all the extra fans either? This would simply be an on-line pc not used for crunching. |

I'd be willing to drive it down to you, Vic. (I won't ship a working computer. I don't trust shipping companies with something like that... If something were to go wrong, or get damaged, I'd be livid.) Danville to Yermo, 400 miles, 6 hours. And back again. I live in Yermo CA TL, I don't know where you live, but that would most likely be one heck of a drive, I'll just wait, thanks for the offer, I have an old HP that lacks a hdd and dvd/cd-rom drive and the HP can't read a USB drive, yeah it's that old. Now I need to go offline and see about rewiring some of the fan connections, so that more will be connected to the psu instead of the motherboard. I live in Danville, CA; SF East Bay, 20 Min East of Oakland. It takes two tanks of gas to get to Moreno Valley and back; 417 Mi trip X 2, I've done this. I can do it again; if interested. Constellation also has no USB's... The company I rescued it from disabled them on the BIOS using a BIOS floppy; which of course, I don't have. However; it will get online to pay bills. :-) TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

If a spare computer is what he needs; I've got it! I just retired Constellation, it works fine. It's on Linux; however, Vic doesn't even need to know Linux to use the computer, just login, launch Firefox, pay bills... I'd be willing to drive it down to you, Vic. It will be interesting to see if he accepts your kind offer TL. If all he is genuinely worried about is being online to pay bills then this should do the trick. Thank you for offering to help. And neither of them is really well off, so I think it would be a grand thing for one to be able to help the other in this manner. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." I'm not sure what you're planning to spend on the case and bracket, but Mark's suggestion to spend that money on a cheap backup computer instead seems wise to me. For one thing, what happens if something happens to your computer while you're upgrading it (either a part turns out to be defective, or you somehow install it wrong, or whatever). Then you won't have a computer to use to order another part. My bills have sizes that largely don't vary much, outside of things that I don't have a lot of control over like electricity or natural gas usage. $20.36 for the 2011 H70 bracket and screws from Corsair and $204.45 to 246.94 for a case from places like Amazon or Tigerdirect or Xoxide. I don't want to have to play musical cases, I have an xl-atx case(a HAF-X), it's just not good enough for the job at hand, even with 4 holes drilled to allow a spot on the lower grill to be used for a fan like that same spot was on the HAF-932 case, that case is just not good enough. If there was one more 120mm fan hole in the case or enough room in the drive bays for a 2nd radiator then I'd use it, as that would save Me a bit of cash, but there isn't, so I need a better case, an Azza 9000W($204.45) or a Xigmatek Elysium($246.94) would do, I'd even thought of an Azza 4000, but rejected that one as simply too big and it costs about $276 with shipping too. There aren't a lot of choices for this size motherboard, even Phanteks Enthoo Primo only supports up up to EATX. I'd need help with gas money to get there and back, but I'm willing to do this. Constellation isn't the fastest computer; either. 1.79 GHz Athlon XP, 512 MB RAM, CD-ROM, 40 GB HD. If interested, I could find out how to create a second User Account, and you'd be up and running in minutes. With the settings I just changed in BOINC for my new cruncher, I wouldn't crunch with Constellation, anymore, but it would be a good backup computer for Vic until he can get his main computer fixed properly. Vic... I am not confused about it at all, Vic. My suggestion addressed exactly your worry about being able to get ONLINE to pay those bills, not your ability to come up with the money to do so. If that is your main worry, my suggestion still stands. Instead of buying some more bits for a hobby computer, find a cheap standby that will be able to get you online if all else goes down. Won't harp on it anymore...LOL. You do what you believe is best for you. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

Vic... I was worried about being able to pay the paperless bills online, not My ability to pay, on the 1st I'm usually quite capable of doing so, I'm just worried I won't be able to get online to do so. I think you confuse ability with capability, I'll have the cash, just not the possibility of doing the transaction online. As to the case I just won't be able to do a thing about that until August. Yer excused Mark, as I know you mean well. I had to make a quick visit to the boys room. My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
