Vic... An older pc makes more heat too, just on idle during the day, this pc keeps the room at 80F, even with the swamp cooler on high cool with the current water pump, I never said I'd use an older system for Seti, I tried that years ago, it wasn't worth the effort for Me. this PC is set at stock speed all around, which is 2.66GHz. Vic... I am not going to respond to this thread again either, no matter what the title. You once again in your last post express your anxiety about being able to continue to pay your bills online. And yet you continue to also post about your plans to build a couple more computers. Would it not be wise to accept an absolutely free offer of a serviceable enough computer to allow you to get online and pay bills until you are able to work out your future plans of building others? There is nothing wrong with your future plans. You talk about power costs. I suggested that it not be used for Seti at all, you would not even need to power it up unless your apparent nightmare comes true, and then you would have a backup ready to go. I also stated that I understood that you have the ability to pay your bills. You said that your anxiety was worrying about having a computer able to do it with. You just don't talk sense sometimes. But then again, neither do I. Have a good one, Vic. May the kitty be with you. "Learn from yesterday. Live for today. Hope for tomorrow." Albert Einstein "With cats." kittyman

You know Vic. You were crying that you wouldn't be able to pay your bills if your computer died. You were offered a free computer even though its old to get you by. I want to know why you wont take an old computer just to pay your bills online? This would be a bill payer only no crunching allowed,And you only turn it on to pay a bill computer. Look I think the free computer would cost Me more in electricity, is that so hard to understand? I also said that an old system that I have here is not really compatible, oh sure it might work, though when I had a GTX280, the system was ok, but the video was slow and painful, as the card was too fast for such a system, now I only have a GTX570 or a 580 that uses a 120mm fan old PCs don't always have a 120mm fan hole, the mini atx case the HP AMD PC uses does not, the biggest it has is 92mm. I'd rather not waste My energy and get frustrated trying to make the two work with each other. I never said I lacked the cash/money to pay My bills, in fact all of them are paid and have always been kept up to date, this isn't exactly the easiest way to say something, online communication takes a lot thought and typing, so please don't presume I'm guilty of anything, nor act indignant when I have said that I am able to pay My bills and such, most of the time I don't type much, though here I'm making a special effort. I just lacked a case and a cooling system for the cpu and the means at the time to get such items immediately, which I still lack for the moment, which looks like it will be the Cooler Master Glacer 240L, I changed My mind on the cpu cooling a bit. Now building two pcs hasn't been a secret, but I guess you haven't been in NC and seen the right thread, wherever it got to. Sure I'm not crazy about this PC dying, I had a BSOD last night, then I reset the PC, so far so good, it was just another transient power delivery problem. I suffer from untreated severe anxiety. My credit card, phone and cable are all paid online, only My rent is paid by paper check, everything else is either paid by an automatic withdrawal(car insur) to get a better discount or by an atm. I don't like having to go to a public library to enter sensitive info in public, you should be able to understand that. I've said enough tonight, next time I might change the thread title since some seem to think I'm being duplicitous or something. in any case I really don't need the power of another computer at the moment, Sorry Es, but if I really needed an old PC, I already have one and I don't run it as it's a waste of money to do so, so on November 1st I'll have the credit card ready to do what I need it to do and I'll have the cpu cooler and possibly the 3 cases, I know what's involved, plus what I have to pay off and such. So far I'm looking at spending about $1,020.00 or so on the 3 cases and the cooler and by then I'll have an $1,100.00 credit limit and I'll have that paid off 7 months later, that's provided that the cases are there then or that they're in better quantities elsewhere by then as I've been told, in which case I'll only need to worry about $628.26 for all of that. Yes, My mind is made up. My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

in any case I really don't need the power of another computer at the moment, I wouldn't say no. LOL. As you can see by my RAC I've been having some problems. My main cruncher was Mr.99s Linux computer which he leaves at work. It went kaput recent and he got it working again by reinstalling LINUX, but didn't reinstall BOINC. I'll have to pop up to his office to put it on again. I also had it running on the old computer that we let the teens use. However, they installed so many games and viruses that they decided that BOINC must be the problem and uninstalled it. Bless their stupid little hearts. So all it was running on was my laptop (which I don't leave running much because I can't afford to have it go kaput as I need it for work) and my andoid tablet (likewise). Today I took action and un-installed all the games from the teens computer and also allowed it to do the windows update. Boinc is now running on that one. I did not clean up the strange splatter that could possibly be coffee or blood on the monitor. There is only so far I will go. I also persuaded my youngest boy to let me run boinc on his precious computer that he won't let anyone else use for obvious reasons. (see above post about viruses and blood splatter). Its the best computer that I've ever had in a house. He saved up all his Christmas money and his paper route money to buy it and did loads of research to see what the best bang for his buck would be. If he ever gets off it enough to allow it to crunch my RAC should improve dramatically. Reality Internet Personality |

Vic, take a look at the Thermaltake Urban T81 Full Tower Case as it has room for plenty of water cooling options that may suit you. ;-) That would be nice, but with 8 slots in the back of the case, the most that case will support is an E-ATX motherboard and I need a case that supports the larger XL-ATX motherboard and a 480 radiator, as I mentioned in My last post there is only 1 case that meets that criteria, the Azza 9000, 17 of which are currently out of reach since I don't live in Australia, so I'll have to concentrate on the 11 that are here in the US that I will be able to buy, provided any are left by November that is. in any case I really don't need the power of another computer at the moment, I have two under construction, one that is totally or will be a totally custom water cooled PC and the other is just another PC to be rebuilt, like My present one, I just haven't said much on this. Ones an X58 and the other two are both X79 cause I found one brand of motherboard can be purchased for less, none are cutting edge as that is too expensive. Back to the cases, they support XL-ATX motherboards and at least 2 radiators and maybe 2 psus, though I don't see a need for 2 psus now, the radiators can be as high as the 480x120mm type in the top, 240x120mm and 120x120mm elsewhere, right now cost is the problem and that is being driven by the lack of general availability, In Australia they have about 17 of these cases last I looked, in the US only 11 and I just need 3. About the only way I'd buy 3 from down under is if there were none left up here in the USA, as shipping per case with boxes would be about $195. As to a free one, I don't need an old PC, especially an AMD motherboard with its cpu socket which is derived from socket 7, AMD cpus still largely have pins in the bottom of the cpu, instead of on the motherboard with a proper cpu clamp, no thanks, I like Intel better, but then I used to used AMD. It's not that I can't buy the cases and a cpu cooler, I can, I just have to wait until I've built up in November a big enough credit line on My secured credit card w/a a couple more deposits of money, then buy the cases and the Cooler Master cpu cooler, the credit limit is needed for this and other objectives I have like 3 1600w EVGA G2 psus, other minor PC parts, misc car parts, eventual car repairs to the a/c and vacuum problem that only shows up when the car a/c is on, that aren't currently vital, plus enough for some closing costs in 2018 for a Mobile Home on its own land that has a permanent concrete foundation or that can be provided with a permanent concrete foundation, that is in a cooler climate and is nearer to My surviving relatives, but that's for another thread and for later. Yesterday I found a source for some Azza 9000B and 9000W cases in Australia on ebay.au, of course the seller won't sell to Me or anyone else in the USA, why? Cause each of the cases and boxes weigh 20kg/42.2lbs and I looked at shipping from Sydney Australia(where the seller is located at), post code: 2000, In US Dollars that would be almost $195 per box, 3 cases/boxes would weigh 60kg, so I'm back to hoping that of the 11 cases of this type that I'm watching, I'll be able to buy the 3 of these cases in Black as that is all that I can find for sale so far in the USA, Maybe in November-December that will improve, until then I wait. Of the 11 I'm watching, only 3 are Black, the other 8 are White... My Amazon Wishlist The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Oh and you won't be hearing from Me from 9am to at least 2pm, as the park is having work done on Thursday July 3rd and that means everything will be shut off throughout the park, I'm slowly making ice in the freezer, but I think I won't have a full bucket by morning, as it is slow to make any ice. Sorry I hit "3" instead of "5", but that makes my point even stronger. You don't need expensive, unreliable kit, you need kit that works solidly. I dare say, if your computer was running properly it would give my daily driver a good run for its money. But the key is "running properly", which, sadly, appears to be a rare event these days. Currently the PC as presently configured is running ok. Well the next motherboard will be reliable, as long as I don't use a case that uses a cable that plugs in between the motherboard and the power supply, which is what damaged the one I'm using now. The X79 motherboard has a 6pin pci-e connector for the pci-e slots to provide dedicated power to the pci-e slots. I put off the case until Jan 1st so I can get a few other things out of the way, like 2 cases of eggs, a tv lamp, 2 fan splitter PCBs, property taxes, tachometer for My car, the car registration(DMV), paying down a debt and paying down My secured credit card. By Jan 1st the cases should be back in stock... I got a narrow putty knife out so that I can redo some of the AS5 on the GTX570 gpu since I don't have anything else that can apply AS5 thinly, since I might have applied too much AS5 on the gpu. It is worth comparing Vic's system, which has a quad core i3, running at 2.67GhZ and a GTX580 and my oldest system which has an AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 (quad core) and a GTX460, both running at stock clock speeds, no fancy cooling and returning a RAC of about 9.5k compared with Vic's 10.5k. Rob, My PC uses an i5 750... Not a dual core i3... And that Zotac GTX580 Infinity is rated at 815MHz, I just run the card at 797MHz since the radiator is only 1/2" thick, eventually I plan to install a Thermaltake Water 3.0 Pro in place of the stock system, since the 3.0 has about a 2" think radiator. I'm running Cuda32 cause of a dying motherboard caused by an Antec HTPC power cable and the video driver is 266.58, otherwise I'd be running Cuda42 and a much more recent driver, so please don't knock My temporarily handicapped system, with a replacement motherboard, you'd be lucky if I didn't wipe the floor with that X6/760 combo. Great advice here but it is not in line with Vic's way. (^8 It's like hot rodding your used car. You work with what you have and what you know. Vic is hot rodding his used car his way. I can remember people that were walking inter-change experts. From experience they could tell that this Ford part bolts right up to Plymouth and increases your performance better than any Plymouth part for cheaper. Way to go Vic! (^8 ...

That would suggest to me that Vic's PC maybe isn't set up as well as it could bethat well, and going down the cooling route to compensate is probably not the best thing to do. |

My plan is to run "old faithful" into the ground then do a bit of a rotation, bringing in a new one of as yet unknown spec as Old Faithful is still crunching, and acting as a back-up server so who know what will be around when the time comes.... I dont know Vic, But it seems you are spending a lot of cash on Old stuff to super charge it. Hyper threading on an i5 750, no, I'm not keeping the 750 running for any longer than I have to. And My i7 3820 isn't cutting edge, yet it's not real old and I've been there and done that to death. In any case I'm going to bed, as I can't keep My eyelids open, night all...
