All 5 of my hand ops have had dissolveable stitches. I think that is standard these days except for major abdominal ops, where more strength from standard sutures is required.

My two stomach surgeries have been done with staples. I was really scared crapless the first time when they took them out ten days later. But it wasnt bad at all.
I had the old fashined gall bladder removal in 1990 and a bowel resection in 1999. I have a zipper from just below my sternum to just above my nether regions now.

I had the same on my hernia surgery last year.
But one of the staples didn`t want to come out.
Wasn`t that funny.

The only time I've ever had stitches was before I got my driver's license. I fell off my bike in a pile of broken glass, putting a nice gash in my right hand. The ER tucked the dangling fat back inside and closed it up with 4 standard black stitches.

There may be stitches under the glue. The last surgery I had involved dissoluble stitches overlaid with glue.

Glad to hear that your dad is home and doing well.
Glue has been used for a number of years, it has several advantages, not least of which is that the patient doesn't have to come back for the stitches to be removed, but also there tends to be less scarring.

That is so good to hear TL :) apart from the of course, understandable grouchiness, poor thing. :( First came across the use of glue on my nephew's head when he took on the main load bearing wall in my house and failed to demolish it. Think it would have worked better if they'd just glued him to a chair in casualty to be quite honest. He fell into a dressing trolley on our way out and needed to be re-glued :) He was six... your dad will do a whole lot better than that I'm sure :)

Oh and congrats on the weight loss too!! What an achievement! :)

They used glue on a cut above My hairline when I was 8 years old, that was 46 years back.

Think it would have worked better if they'd just glued him to a chair in casualty to be quite honest. When I got modified, I got stainless steel staples, no they didn't hurt, I did have to keep the area clean to prevent infection. My left ankle though does hurt to this day, if I walk or stand too much.

btw: They didn't use stitches on the external cuts/holes; they "glued" the cuts closed. Is this the "NEW" normal thing to do for surgery??? I've always seen stitches... :-/

Sounds like they used a laparoscope instead of the more invasive "slice & dice" procedure. Several small incisions, just big enough to get the waldos in and the diseased tissue out. Less disruption of healthy tissue (and less pain), less chance of infection, smaller incisions that heal quicker. And yes, they use something like superglue instead of stitches or staples for the small incisions - it gives a better seal, less scarring, less chance for infection. The state of the art has advanced considerably in the past 20 years.
