Some trivia facts on that tooth key, while we wait for the next "Mysterious Miscellaneous Tool" picture. A high quality c. 1850 antique dental toothkey marked: H. HERNSTEIN. This handsome dental antique has an exaggerated dog-leg shaft and a removable rotating and reversible fulcrum that allows the claw to be adjusted to whatever tooth is to be extracted. The handle is checked-coromandel. At 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) long, this is relatively large toothkey. The dental and surgical instrument maker Hermann Hernstein was active in New York City from 1843 to 1861. |

That thing must have been used back in the day of whiskey for anesthetic. Lynn, thanks to you, I got it, but if you have something ready, go ahead. I have something in mind, but don't have my camera with me. I'll take a picture Wednesday night. The mind is a weird and mysterious place

Dental torture device? Yikes! Yes, it is a tooth extractor. I give you the win for that, however back in the days it was used, it was called a "tooth key". Lynn was close, but you grabbed the win in the end by saying what it was used for. Your turn!! PM coming. |

That handle looks too nice to have been used outside, and the teeth look like they need to grab into something, which I thought Byron was on the right track with, but I'm going out on a limb and say a printing press crank? No, Lynn is on the right track though.... |

antique dental tool Yes, that is right Lynn, but to get the win, you need to answer the initial questions: "What is the name of this tool then, and what is it used for?" |

My first thought was of the awning crank used by Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street, but it doesn't really seem right. Boy, that brings back memories... The mind is a weird and mysterious place

That's as wrong as any of the other suggestions, but as a clue, you used one word in your guess, that could lead to the right answer... |

@Byron: Not a rope making tool. @Chris: Right, it is not used today, it's from circa 1850. At least not in the developed parts of the world. It might still be used though, in other parts of the world. |

The Packard Fourth Series Six Model 426 Runabout (Roadster), 1927, was well known for confusing people! |

That's the last time I trust something that's written on a forum LOL, thought it was a windshield repairer for a Packard 1927:)) Yes, never trust what you read on a forum, even those who seems to know what they talk about, are often wrong. :-) I'll have to wait until tomorrow evening before I have the time to post something mysterious. |
