Nah, it is possible to get aid where it is supposed to go. But it does require constant tight oversight. And that costs money and effort. So instead we often see that governments use it as an excuse to cut back on foreign aid. It makes them look tough and its an easy way to save a few billion. |

Then please explain why a space-faring nuclear power received millions in foreign aid? |

Really? Is that all you can come up with? There you aren't talking about money misspend due to corruption. That money goes there because the government has decided it should go there. You can agree or disagree with that decision, but its not corruption. Also, it depends on how you spend the money. Say you want to give China aid, well obviously they don't need vaccination programs or something. But you could spend it on fostering civil society groups that are more progressive and aimed at democratization or improving the condition of human rights in China. Strengthening those groups in return might make the place a little more open to democratic reform or reduce the blatant human rights violations. |

That was just one example. Had you been reading the posts on these threads, you would have seen many examples of where the aid did not reach the people it was intended for. A clear example is Africa. The reports have already been posted. Not my problem if you fail to read them. As for it not being corruption, you are incorrect. The government knew some time ago, but still stuck to their agreements. That is corruption as it's a blatant waste of taxpayers money. |

Totally agree. However, as seen by the MP's expense scandal. The oversight committee was staffed by MP's with 3 independent overseer's who were not allowed to vote So how do the taxpayers get those issues resolved? |

We have some here who extol the virtues of that greatest of colonial empires - Great Britain & stand up whenever it gets denigrated, so Will those very same people stand up & demand recognition for those who contributed to that empire? |

A thoughtful & possibly scary documentary, well worth watching by all Brits. Will it happen that is the question all should be asking. A 2nd question should be: - Is it too late? Britain on the Brink |

Cleggie's attitude must have rubbed off on "Call me dave" Defence Review "And I'm absolutely determined that the RAF, Army and Navy will have the equipment, the means and the resources to deal with it." So Del-boy, why did you cut them to the bone during your 1st term? |

Wow, what a speech from a 20 year old... Maiden Speech ...I'll lay odds that there are many old fogies out there who would say, female & still wet behind the ears. To them I'll ask: - WTH have you done for your country? |

Wow, what a speech from a 20 year old... Now she's going to be an interesting politician to follow and much of her further careerer in politics depends, I feel, on whether or not Scotland gains independence one day. If Scotland turns more politically to the right after independence then she may fall out of favour. But there again, with a bit more life experience, she may develop a bit more pragmatism hence find greater support and turn out to be a very fine politician. Don't start me off, Sirius! I've said before, that essential utilities should never be in the hands of the private sector. Communications, are one of those things that I class as an essential utility - but BT should never have been sold-off in the first place and should have remained in 'public ownership', just like water, gas, electricity and, oil, too, come to that. Alas, the spivs in the Tory party sold virtually everything off to their pin-striped suited mates in the ever-so-honest 'City' for a fraction of their value, so they could effectively 'buy favour' with some of the electorate. That worked out well, didn't it?! Any money made as operating profit, goes into the back pockets of the trustworthy financial institutions, rather than the Treasury. Is it any real wonder we're in the mess we are? As usual the rabid Tories attack the BBC on virtually every front, because they are a paranoid party. Most of them have never done a useful days work in their entire lives and think the electorate are as stupid as they think. Some of the electorate are; the 'die-hards'! If they really think that listening to Ken Bruce, will be better by being interrupted by adverts from a firm of 'ambulance chasers', then they're more deluded than even I think they are! Oh yes, the 10% hike in pay. Funny how the government in power (don't ask me how a bunch of people in a 'club' can be in charge) soon adopt the ways of their friends like the CBI. Yes, all well and good saying that an independent body made recommendations, but how independent is it really? Besides that, people generally have to show that they've worked a certain amount of hours - MPs don't! If I had my way, they'd all have to 'clock-in' and out before any money went anywhere near them! After all, we all know when a politician is lying....when their lips move. I understand that Parliament needs quite a lot of building work doing. Damned right it does!!! Perhaps it would be better to start anew. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

It Is Time that another rag owned by NI which employs pimps & whores gets shut down! THIS was not in the "public Interest Children are taught by their peers & as often as not, they mimic their peers. To publish this with that despicable headline says much not only of the owner but those employed by him. Thank god, I haven't helped him get richer since the late seventies. |

Ah yes, once again, the same people who effectively brought a Sunday newspaper into such disrepute, that it had to be closed, delight everyone with their bile! As someone who once lived in Australia, I was well aware of the 'love' that my then countrymen, held dear Rupert in - (un)like his father (he too was justifiably accused of suspect reporting regarding Gallipoli)! As ever they use that phrase 'public interest' to justify their malicious efforts, while bringing ever closer, a press in this country that will be far from free. I'm not a monarchist, by any means, although, with our current crop of Westminster crooks, that could change. Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive! |

"It is not that pictures or images of this sort should be suppressed, nor that there is any true risk that the furore will dim the bright star of the Queen and her reputation. But it is, perhaps, an unkind way to treat a woman in her ninth decade." Nice to see that there are who have some decency. Surprisingly, it came from a daily mail reporter |
