http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

Make a Client_configuration (cc_config.xml) file and add into it:

<cc_config>
     <log_flags>
          <work_fetch_debug>1</work_fetch_debug>
     </log_flags>
</cc_config>

Correct, and it is appropriate to add:

Use Notepad to create the file.
When the time comes to save it, type the name exactly as Guy has written it.
On the line below the file name, select "Save as type: All files"
Just save the file in your documents folder for now - we'll check it, and move it to the right place later.
When complete, look in your documents folder. Check that "XML Document shows as the file's 'Type' or 'Description'.
It will probably show simply as 'cc_config': if the type/description is correct, that's good.

At this point, take a break. Read what was said in the other thread about you purchasing an NVidia card, but selecting the option in the installer to install programs suitable for an AMD/ATI card. Fixing that may render the rest of this tutorial unnecessary.

More follows, will edit this post.

Where do I make that file? How do I find my notepad?

Click on the 'start' button.

In the box immediately above, where the grey text says 'Search programs and files', type notepad. Press enter.

I'm pausing now, while you follow through. Post when you have

a) made the file
b) checked your installer choices

and we can take it from there.

Um. Open Notepad again, same way as last time.
Type anything you like in the box (we're going to cancel this one, not save it).
Choose 'Save As' from the menu: tell us if you see a list of names in the main body of the screen, above the empty box waiting for a file name. If you see any files - I don't want to know what they are - but tell us what you see above the list. Mine says "Documents library" (in large, green, writing): what do you see?

Then the 'cc_config' file should be in the list.

Don't worry - cancel the 'Save as', and close/exit Notepad - don't save any garbage you typed.

Open "Documents" - second from top in the right-hand column from the start button.

At the extreme top right of the screen, grey text says 'Search Documents'. Start typing 'cc-config' there - you should jump to it pretty quickly.

OK, assume you didn't make it right - go though the process again:

Notepad, contents from Guy's post, name (exactly)

cc_config.xml

Saved as type "All files". Doesn't matter if you end up with two or three similar files, so long as one is exactly right.

OK, now we need to copy it to where BOINC can use it.

NB for Guy, TBar, and anyone else who may be watching: DON'T assume you know where that is - it could be anywhere. And, while were at it - you'll note that I checked which OS Miklos is running before starting these instructions, and the directions I'm giving match an uncustomised version of Windows 7, even though I'm typing them on a Windows XP computer.

But in this case we have a message log from the old thread, with
3/13/2014 3:20:37 AM | | Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC

So, Miklos, we need you to open a second copy of the folder explorer. On the yellow folder icon at the bottom of the screen, right-click with the mouse, and choose "Windows Explorer" (three up from the bottom).

Push them around the screen so you can see both easily. In the top line of the screen, where it says "> Libraries > Documents" or "> Computer > C: > something", replace that with

C:\ProgramData\BOINC

Make sure you can still see cc_config in the other window.

The window you typed 'C:\ProgramData\BOINC' should show you a long list of other XML files, and three folders 'notices', 'projects', 'slots'. Just checking we're in the right place.

Click once on the cc_config file you made, and prepare to copy. Any way you're comfortable with:

1) Mouse, right-click, 'copy'
2) Keyboard, Ctrl-C
3) Both: Ctrl on keyboard, click and hold with mouse (takes practice!)

Assuming 1) or 2), click in the BOINC window (any empty space) and Paste - either
1) Mouse, right-click, 'paste'
2) Keyboard, Ctrl-V

Confirm when done, and file is visible in BOINC folder.

C:\ProgramData\BOINC
No items matched my search

By the way, when I clicked on BOINC in my files its tiny 2KB and shows only a short cut and zero files.

No, not the search box this time - the box on the same line, to the left.

But, I just looked at the other computer which runs SETI just fine and it is the same, no files, at least where I looked.

Hold on while I go downstairs and look at it on a machine where I haven't customised the location. BRB.

Nothing like this?

Put your C:\ProgramData\BOINC, where mine says '> Computer > OS (C:) > ProgramData > BOINC

Note no space between 'Program' and 'Data'.
