Hi crunchers,

I'm running ATX computers/Intel i5 processors/MSI GeForce GT610 2Gb/Linux 12.04.2 OS.
Building these RACK-mounted computers only for running BOINC linux version.

I'm trying to setup the a new computer with graphic cards that will work with BOINC (GPU). But I'm having trouble finding and installing the right driver
The card I'm using is MSI GT610 2Gb version. It has no active fan, and I chose this because of the large cooling ribs, where a large fan can be mounted. I bought the other card as well, the ZOTAC GeForce 610 with an active cooling system. But it is a very small fan and this is the reason I bought both. To test and find the best.
But, in Linux, Ubuntu 12.04.2, I'm trying to install the right driver for the MSI card so that BOINC will recognize it.

Anybody who know the right driver and installation command? The driver I've been trying to install is this "http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/61453/en-us" which Mr. Ageless has been so kind and help me find. So if it is me who is doing something wrong, and it is the right driver, please help me find and use the right command and way to set it up.

Please help me. And sorry for the newbie questions o)

Hello friends,

System: Ubuntu Linux Server 12.04.2
Issue: Graphic card driver / to make GPU work in BOINC

Needs "apt-get" command or repository if it works.
Needs help to clean up the mess I made. Please look beneath

Still trying to install a driver that will make the MSI GeForce gt610 2Gb, work with BOINC.
The computer is a Ubuntu Linux Server 12.04.2 and I just tried this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

and a "FAIL" command appeared during boot-up! So now I think I f..... it up. The letters also looks funny big now.

This is the fail command i'm getting now:
Load fallback graphic devices [Fail]

I've tried this as well:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hi,

I tried this last thing, and it went so much better, because of the right 32bit, yes, but now the letters on the screen is normal!

32bit:
wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/331.38/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run
sudo chmod 0755 *.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-331.38.run

But! Still not showing the GPU in the gpu field:

Hello again my friend ;)

Sorry, I didn't see this post, before answering the other post.

The problem, I think, is that I'm using Ubuntu Server 12.04, the server edition. I'm not using any graphical interface. It's all terminal. So, a lot of the problem solving sites I've been reading, is regarding the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop edition. But I'm reading the links you showed me, maybe I will find a solution.

After installing BOINC, is there anything you do, to "turn on/start" the use of GPU in your version of OS/BOINC? From Mr. Ageless I think it was, I learned that I have to setup http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project and that I did. My default setup has GPU "turned off" but my "Work" setup has it all turned on. I use the "work" preferences for my Linux Boinc Servers.

Well, I hope we/I can somehow solve this. I really do.

Again, thanks for your help!

Hello again ;)

I looked into several of the site you showed me. I think these are for the desktop edition. If not, it's much to complicated for me. I'm not that good, yet ;) This is the sites I've been reading:

http://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-getting-started-guide-for-linux/index.html#runfile-installation
https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-downloads

But the next one I made myself, by reading some and changing some. It might work, but please take a look. Is this the way to install a linux driver for MSI GeForce GT610 2Gb graphic card on Ubuntu Server 12.04.2 !?:

CUDA REPOSITORY - UBUNTU SERVER 12.04.2:

http://www.r-tutor.com/gpu-computing/cuda-installation/cuda5.5-ubuntu

CUDA Repository:
Retrieve the CUDA repository package for Ubuntu 12.10/12.04 from the CUDA download site and install it in a terminal.

$ wget http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/ubuntu1204/i386/cuda-repo-ubuntu1204_5.5-0_i386.deb

$ sudo dpkg -i cuda-repo-ubuntu1204_5.5-0_i386.deb
$ sudo apt-get update

Linux Kernel Header:
Then you need to install the necessary Linux kernel headers.

$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-‘uname -r‘

Proprietary Video Driver:
The built-in nouveau video driver in Ubuntu is incompatible with the CUDA Toolkit, and you have to replace it with the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge \ xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings \ nvidia-current-dev nvidia-modprobe

CUDA Toolkit:
Then you can install the CUDA Toolkit using apt-get.

$ sudo apt-get install cuda

Environment Variables:
As part of the CUDA environment, you should add the following in the .bashrc file of your home folder.

export CUDA_HOME=/usr/local/cuda-5.5
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${CUDA_HOME}/lib64

PATH=${CUDA_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
export PATH

CUDA SDK Samples:
Now you can copy the SDK samples into your home directory, and proceed with the build process.

$ cuda-install-samples-5.5.sh ~
$ cd ~/NVIDIA_CUDA-5.5_Samples
$ make

If everything goes well, you should be able to verify your CUDA installation by running the deviceQuery sample in bin/linux/release.

QUESTION:
What about this, is it right what I've done, to put each of the to commands into a single line? it's showed like this:
$ sudo apt-get remove --purge \
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings \
nvidia-current-dev nvidia-modprobe

This I just don't know how to do? Is it shell commands? Or changes in a file?:
export CUDA_HOME=/usr/local/cuda-5.5
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${CUDA_HOME}/lib64

PATH=${CUDA_HOME}/bin:${PATH}
export PATH

After installing BOINC, is there anything you do, to "turn on/start" the use of GPU in your version of OS/BOINC?

Not really
On Windows you just install standard video driver from NVIDIA or ATI (the driver package contains CUDA and/or OpenCL 'modules'/runtimes)
and that makes BOINC recognize the GPU

As I already noted - I don't use Linux (so can't check your commands)

You missed this (posted in your other thread):

Hello ;)

There are several Linux gurus that read and post in Number Crunching

I post questions there because of this:
"...If you have a question or problem, please use the Questions & Answers section of the message boards.."

I can't see all of my posts/threads! Can you help me find out, how to make all of my questions appear here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_index.php
Notification I think it's called in English. Only some of my questions appear in this list, and it's the only way I know how to see when someone answers a question of mine.

You mean the thread names/links shown bellow the 'Subscribed threads'?
As the name of the list suggests:
- you need to use the [Subscribe] button at the top of thread (possible with any thread, not only yours)

Hi BilBg,

Thank you ;) Done it, got it ;)

Next step. We foun a driver where several bugs has been "bug'ed out"! It's a 64bit driver as well as the OS. Some think that I need to install X to get BOINC to crunch data. Therefore the attempt on making the Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 64bit to use GPU with the Nvidia driver/GT610 will be a wipe/clean installation of Ubuntu Server 12.04.4, then X, then this driver:
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/72250

Is it more safe/better to use the apt-get install boinc-client command rather than the boinc repository "add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc"??
I'll make a new post with this question.

Hello friends ;)

Almost solved. Wrong edition, right result!

New attempt to solve the issue "Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 64bit - BOINC using GPU - Nvidia driver/GeForce GT610"

Just finishing the clean installation of Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.4 (Desktop, not Server!) Not being able to install the file from BOINC's download site, I did this instead "apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager" which is showed on BOINC helping pages. But this does not install the newest boinc version. And now a notice tells me to download and install the new version.... etc. etc. never mind that right now.

But, after installing this desktop version, and installing boinc-client and boing-manager, and attaching to project using the manager, I checked to see if the GPU was running. Not yet, so I went on DL the newest driver from Nvidia 64bit 331.38. and making it bootable "chmod +x filename.run". Running the file gave me the same problems as when doing this on the Ubuntu Server Edition! So I went on, doing the same as I did there, almost.
I started a terminal, ctrl-alt-f2 and logged in, the claiming sudo rights "sudo su", then "stop lightdm", then running the Nvidia installer "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38.run". Some questions are asked during the installation, I answered "Yes" to [install 32bit libraries etc.], "Yes" to [reconfigure X-server or something like that] (I will make a better todo when this is all finished!!)
Rebooting the system and updating the project from Boinc Manager showed me a 5 running unit. (CPU i5-3470 has 4 cores) and this 5 unit is named: (0.01 CPUs + 1 NVIDIA GPU). This I also found when doing it with Ubuntu Server 12.04.4, but the GPU ran for 7 minutes and the the temp. of the GPU suddenly dropped. This meaning the crunching also stopped. But not with the Ubuntu Desktop 12.04.4, here the GPU has been running now for 47 minutes and the GPU is still 47 degrees Celsius!
Here's the log file from Boinc Manager and a screen-dump of Boinc Manager showing the GPU crunching still after more than 10 minutes.:
GPU temp.:

OK, I couldn't upload a screendump, it's not possible in this forum. The reason I would like to show you this screendump is because when 4 work units were done after about 50 minutes, the GPU had only completed about 5-6% of it's work unit.
I know this card GT610 is a "not very fast" card. We discussed this inhere. But I also learned that GPU's would be much faster doing data crunching that ordinary CPU's !! I will replace the GT610 with the faster Asus GeForce GT640 which I was told would be a much better choice. But how much better will it be?

What is the reason for doing all this work, if GPU's are so much "slower" than an ordinary Intel i5 CPU? How fast is a "fast" graphic card" compared to e.g. i5-3470?

We now know that the hardware in this test works, and we know that it runs on Ubuntu Desktop 12,04.4. OK, then why will it not run on Ubuntu Server 12.04.4? The only difference is the graphical environment, X-server! According to Ubuntu, there's not the difference of the Desktop Edition and the Server Edition as earlier on, e.g. Ubuntu Server 10.04 v. Ubuntu Desktop 10.04!
So why is this? Why will the GPU not work properly?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated at this thread:

GPU temp.:
