Loving that Outlander machine. How well does your Titan run Seti tasks? I was looking into used Titans, and Titan Blacks for the double precision for other projects.

Originally I had 2, but burned one out and was getting a RAC of about 55k. Now with the Titan and 2 750ti I'm getting a RAC of about 46k

They're definitely worth it, but a 780ti works better I believe and would be cheaper than even a second hand Titan.

And then when you really get down to it a 980ti spanks the both of them, so...

Having said that, if you can get a Titan for a good price (I got mine effectively for free) then they're certainly built for it!

One day, when I can slap 8 nVidia K80 in a box, I will.

Until I win the lottery I worked out yesterday I can probably trade up to 3 x 970 (second hand) for Outlander at little cost to me given what I could trade in for them (the Titan, the 2 x 750ti and a couple of old phones I have lying around doing nothing).

Performance-wise 3 x 970 will be only a shade more expensive (£30 or so) than 2 x 980 but quite a bit more than £30 more powerful. Looking at various benchmarks the 980 is only ~15% more powerful for a lot more than 15% of the price. [edit: Just had a look and the 970 appears to be ~150% more powerful than the 750ti, and as near as dammit comparable to the Titan with the added 'value' that now all the cards in Outlander will be the same)

I will investigate further on Saturday.

This morning I started my computer and found that the water cooling fan made quite a racket, a bit weird as the whole thing is only sitting there since a couple of weeks. So I opened it up, something that needed to happen anyway as the other day I'd found that despite me following the water cooling build to the manual, the fan on the radiator was blowing instead of sucking, and the fan on the back of the case was sucking instead of blowing.

Took the side off my system and was met by cat hair. On the new fans, on the radiator, on the PSU. This on the Aerocool case that's got more filters than your dust buster has. But it also has some holes here and there to allow more cool air in, and there's no filters there. So cat hair can creep in undetected. Until, that is, the fans start to make an odd racket, due to hair clinging on them.

Anyway, I forgot to make photos again of the inside of the case, will do that next maintenance round next month.
But here's at least now some shots of it in the computer room:


Nice tower, sits snug under my desk. No cat's used it yet as an option to jump on my desk, so they never hit the power button yet.

Got these slits on both sides, and they easily suck in cat hair.

Turning the fan around on the radiator did make a difference: idle temperature was 32C before and is now 27C.

I'm actually a little unhappy with the tower. It doesn't quite have enough room for the optical drive with the model of radiator I have installed. That was an annoying surprise.

It's larger than it looks, it was an oversight on my part. I didn't take into account that the radiator for the corsair H100i GTX Extreme was made thicker.

It gives a nice cooling performance boost and keeps the toasty unlocked 4790k I'm running at 4.6 at 130f (in an unairconditioned room that's about 80f).

Overall I'm happy with the tower, It's just gonna take a little dremel work to adjust for that extra quarter inch.

I don't know why dyypc insisted on having the optical slot mounted so high; there's a ton of room under it. I guess it was a design oversight on their part, too.

What brand and type of tower is that? That looks like a mini atx case, I don't go less than full towers, but then I have in the current PC, 2 clc radiators, the next one will have 5 and is the biggest full tower case that I could find,at the time that is, the Thermaltake X9 will be My next case, but that's a ways off.

Andrew, do you need the optical drive?

I run 2 computers without any drives other than for when I install the OS. After that I remove them. Save's money on not needing to get a new one for each computer.

If i ever do need to reattach them I just run the cable out of the box and use the drive. When I'm done, I unconnect it and put the cable back into the box.

here at the office i just borrow an external usb optical drive to install the os

my boss is worse, he only wants to install os from bootable usb flash drives

Zalster: That's exactly what I did. This tower is hooked to an hdmi splitter that goes to my TV as well, so the intent of the drive was to be able to pop in blu rays when I want to watch something I that's in my physical media library.

All I really have to do is drill a different set of mounting holes for the radiator so it sits back further in the tower. As is, it's set up equidistant between the front and back of the chassis.

I have a similar case, the steam castle by deepcool. Ugly as hell but functional, picked it up cheap when it was on shellshocker. I'll take some pics of it when I get home from work tomorrow. I'm running a single 750 in there with a dual core on a cheapo mb, but it works like a champ, though I have to dedicate the entire cpu to the graphics card. If I use just one core it throws a fit.

My Deepcool system. I bought these items cheap and re-purposed them. The case was $40, the PSU was $20, the MB was $20, Ram $20, HDD from a busted external USB drive, reused old heatsink from a previous build, the GPU from ebay for $99 and the G3258 CPU was $60. The machine produces around 11-12K aday using the gpu only. It acts crazy when I take a core away, so it gets feed by the whole cpu.

Well my trusty 6 year old box (i5-750) is in the process of getting replaced as the king of the hill. I'm holding out for Skylake, most likely i7-6700K, with a Gigabyte GA170X-UD3 or UD5 and 16GB (2x8) DDR4 of Corsair Dominator Platinum 2666 Mhz.

Already have picked up the following:
Corsair HX-850i PSU
Corsair H80i-GT Cooler
Samsung 850 pro 500GB SSD
Corsair Obsidian 450D (on order), adding 2x140mm Corsair AFG140-BLED case fans to front and moving the original's to the top of the case.

Existing Items:
WD Caviar Black 2TB HD for data drive.
LG Blue Ray burner

Last and not least GPU's
MSI R9-380 4G
Visiontek HD87870 2G

Hoping to get some half respectable numbers out of that rig. I expect it should produce well over 50K RAC, crunching Astropulse.

Will pop my Visiontek HD4870 back into the old box, and probably run than as my second box.
