Thanks Brent and Zoom.

@Zoom. Yeah summer time brings all sort of new expenses. I'm looking forward to seeing your final products when you get done. Wishing you the best with those.

Well, I have a few ideas, like putting an SSD on an x1 pcie card, one per PC, remember I mentioned there will be 5... I need to get a new case to replace the HAF-X, since I don't see modding it as being more than a waste of time, I've got lots of time, I'm just not up to doing that work, since I'd need to buy a lot of stuff and a few modern tools that I lack.

Just getting a few things repaired will be as much as I can have done on My current income, though there is something good on the horizon here in CA, it seems to have unanimous support, so far, though it's not guaranteed right now..

I've got an NZXT Switch 810 in Matte Black on the way, plus an EVGA P55 FTW motherboard these will go with the i5 750 cpu here, sure the EVGA and the i5 are old, but they are paid for and 3 pcie slots are nothing to sneeze at, especially when they are filled with 3 Asus GTX970 cards that will be cooled by three NZXT X41 cpu coolers.

Then there will be My 1st X99 motherboard, an Asrock EXTREME3 LGA2011-v3 with an i7 5820K cpu, cooled by an aio 280 cooler(same for the P55 FTW cpu) and for video this PC will be like the P55 FTW, both will each use a Corsair AX860 Platinum psu.

My next purchases will have to be 3 cases, an NZXT case, a Xigmatek case and an Azza GT1 case, then 2 GTX590 cards, all while paying down My existing bills that I owe on My cards and credit line. The NZXT and the Xigmatek are both full towers, if the Xigmatek is not something I can get cause of not being available anymore, that'll become another AZZA GT1, the NZXT is another Switch 810, and I'm hoping I can get a Black one, though White(yuck) is a possibility..

The car parts I do need to get first though, since I don't need any rust to start on My only car, which so far I'm unable to replace, since I don't have the income to do so currently.

Recently I did buy some parts to cool the place, but so far they've not been installed, since the guy that will do this, works for the park and He can only do this on His own time and on My dime. The park has 13 old empty and I gather unsafe mobile homes that were not being taken care of by the previous park owner, that the current park owners inherited that will have to be demolished.

Thanks Zalster.

That's nothing to sneeze at. Looks pretty good for doing it on a budget. I've been piecing together my build and my wife's build for a year, and hers will be done in July, and mine, sometime next summer (this year is just getting it to basic operational status. Our budget is a bit tighter than yours, but it's a work in progress. In a couple of weeks, I order the second G.SKILL Ripjaws X DDR3-2400 16GB kit, which will un-mismatch the RAM, and max it out to 32GB. The Team Vulcan 8GB DDR3-2400 kit goes into my wife's ITX build after this upgrade. Then, It's either a video card, or upgrade the PSU to the AX1200i in anticipation of three 980's by next summer. I could go four on this board, but I want to keep one slot open for other things. The first video card might just be a 960 or 970, depending on bills, and that will rotate into my wife's ITX once I can get the first 980. She doesn't do more than browsing, second life, and sims, so, for her, going to a Devil's Canyon will be a MAJOR upgrade from her core2 duo laptop. Our original plan was for me to finish mine by mid summer, and for her to get a kick-a machine as well finished by xmas, but she changed her mind and opted for a sewing machine and serger, and out of sheer guilt of having The Legendary Black Beast of Aaargh!, and her having a core2 duo T9600 laptop, has me getting her into the ITX box at least by July or August, as all it currently lacks is a CPU and PSU, and the RAM will be in it as soon as the second 16GB kit arrives for mine. After getting the basics in mine, it's simply collecting the custom loop parts, and 980's for next year's project for me, the custom loop.

One thing I am noting about the current state of SETI@home is that the VAST majority of die-hards are generally running it on dedicated older systems. Not really super fast, just consistently churning out WUs day in and day out year after year. It took me until the 4770K last summer to hit a million, then the ASRock problems cumulating in the third (second RMA replacement) Z87E-ITX board smoked a MOSFET, and fried the 4770K. I've only been crunching again since the beginning of April, and I'm over 310k credits up, and that's just on the CPU. First million credits took fifteen years. The second before this autumn. Gotta love the new stuff!

Why the 5820K? Just budgetary? I'd wait another month and just get the 5930K, but that's just me. After doing the 4790K build, and at the current budget here, it'll be showcase material by next summer, so I'll probably wait for the Skylake-E next autumn for a 2011 (or whatever it ends up being). With the money going into this, I can't justify an X99 here. Once that's built, my wife will get a kickin system (this one).

What's your electric bill like?

5820K vs 5930K, I based that being the Asrock Extreme3 motherboard has only 3 x16 sized pcie slots, anything more than a 5820K would be over kill and My budget is always tight, but then I have to survive on $889.40 a month and nothing else, I don't work anymore since I'd become disabled in 2003 due to an accident in late 2002. So unless I found a very good deal on a 5930K, I'll just get the 5820K cpu, but I have other stuff to get and to get done before hand and I have roughly $262 left over after paying the bills, buying My food and such.

Last month the electric bill was $40.69 after the 20% care discount, which I have to reapply for next year sometime.

With all the things to fix here, just getting something done is a major accomplishment, this fall I have the gas heater to get fixed, last time it was the blower, now I don't know, when the heater tries to power up all I hear is a click and then nothing, but the system is a 28 year old Coleman gas central air heater, in a 1987 Fleetwood mobilehome and that's 810 sqft of ownership & $200 in taxes that I own w/NO mortgage, I just rent the land it sits on, which was the best I could do with the money I had available in late 2006.

In any case I have to buy a car part in June for a 16 year old car and then in July I can buy the ram on the 3rd for My new PC, which except for the lack of ram and a hdd, is ready to go, maybe in November I can get a 3rd GTX590 card or if I'm lucky 2, for a total of 4 cards of that type, in Jan I'm hoping I can get 2 pair of jeans and maybe 3 shirts. I'm hoping the next case isn't as tight as that Azza 9000B case is, since it was a struggle just to get the DVD drive to fit in the drive bay, I think Azza screwed up and made the 5.25" drive bays 1mm or 2mm to narrow, but considering its light weight for the size, being low cost and used, I'm lucky the case works.

How light is the Azza vs the HAF-X?

Fully loaded the Azza feels lighter than the mostly unloaded HAF-X case.

But then the HAF-X has a Coolgate radiator in it and a 650w psu in the drive bays and a useless(for the moment) pump/reservoir, the pump reservoir won't fit in the NZXT 810, there just aren't enough drive bays there, so I need to get a single drive bay reservoir and pump or some other pump and reservoir that wouldn't need a drive bay, that PC is a long term project.

The NZXT 810 feels about as heavy as the HAF-X, but then it has a motherboard, a GTX590 video card and 2 copper water blocks in there.

I'll probably get the HAF-X out today and install the EVGA P55 FTW motherboard in the case and remove the vga psu, which needs to go into the NZXT 810 case and then post some new pics in My thread.

If I had the extra income($198-199 a month) that a certain CA state Government Assembly Bill(AB474) mentions, I could get stuff done quicker here, but I can't spend what I don't have, so I'll just watch, wait and encourage those in CA Government to help, that bill would be about $2.5 Billion more a year given to 1.073 single people like Me to spend in the economy or double what the state spends on the SSP now(in the military that would be known as a force multiplier), SSP is the State Supplemental Payment, Gov Brown is happy to leave the 2009 cuts in place, I'm not, nor are others, and I could really use the money, since I've been below the poverty line since 2009, like 10% below, the bill would raise Me up to 112% of poverty. But I digress.

Our situations sound similar. Me unemployed in really rural Texastan, and we are living off our wife's disability check. I'm focusing on computer gear, because I can make money with it, and I need to keep my skills up to par to compete once we get back to civilization.

Still, this box doesn't do too shabby... As much as we have put into it, and as long as it's taken, it had better...

Ok here's the latest pic of My 2nd PC, now I need to get 2 more GTX590 video cards and then some supplies to filter out any debris from manufacturing and/or old solidified dye from any previous owners, this happens and I'd rather not have pump failure happen really. That round thing is an extra DEMCiflex filter that is sticking to the case, there is just metal beneath the filter, I just didn't put the filter in a storage box yet. You can see more pics and commentary in My Computer Builds thread.

My finished Seti Jr. computer. Sporting a Z87 Gryphon, 4690K, 2-EVGA 750Ti, and a Corsair CS450M mounted in a Fractal ARC Midi.

My next work in progress, SetiCruncher. Asus Z97-A, 4690K, Corsair HX850 mounted in a Enthoo Pro Tower. I need some suggestions for GPUs, I have a $500-600 budget and was wondering what card/cards you guys would buy?

I'd say 3 Asus GTX960 Strix cards, since the cards cost $199 each at Newegg.

I think three MSI GTX 960 2GD5 might be better, to get the heat away from the cards

Is that this card here?
MSI GTX 960 2GD5 $214.99 @ Newegg.

The Asus GTX 960 Strix does not look much different, from what I've read it uses 208w max or 17.33A.
Asus GTX 960 Strix $199.99 @ Newegg.

A GTX 960 shouldn't use much more than 120W, http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-960/specifications.

Cheers.

According the site Guru of 3D, full load is 115w, yeah know it's a 960 Strix, but the gpu is the same. System idle is 121w.

I have this one coming tomorrow.

Nice looking card, is there a benefit to having 4gigs vs 2gigs for Seti WUs?

I also like this card that was recommended by woohoo.

Is this MSI card louder then the ASUS STRIX and the MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G?
I see the benefits of the blower style fan, and wondered if the other two cards suggested would generate less noise with acceptable temps?

If I were doing air, I'd get this MSI card type, but since I want something to convert to closed loop water cooling, that's why I choose the Asus GTX970 Strix, as it has a heatsink on the vrms, while the ram has no heatsink. I'd rather get the 980 version, but that's a lot of money per card, since that would take Me 2 months to pay for each card and Ten 980 cards is a lot of time and money.

That MSI card MIGHT have airflow issues if you are stacking them, just looks a little tight to me to get air input.

Having more memory will help for high resolution gaming but science apps don't use the extra memory.

If you only get one or two cards you can go either way. The blower will be louder but the interior will be cooler. The cards with the double fans will be quieter but your case interior will be warmer although you can probably still manage it.

With three cards I think the blower is the way to go because you only have three exhausts out the case. In order to do three cards you have to use to bottom two slots so those two cards would be sandwiched together and although there's four fans between the two cards, the heat comes out the top and front filling your case interior with very hot air. I say this having learned the hard way. I have four asus cards right now. Two of them are in one computer, one in another, and the last one catching dust in a drawer because I don't want to pop the 20A breaker again(or find a different circuit).

Or you can use a riser for the last card but it won't be pretty.

Kinda like this person's rig?

I'm thinking I might go two 960s and one 750ti on the bottom slot since its shorter and out of the way of the 960's blower. Or I could just buy two 970s.

In my Seti Jr. rig I had the two 750s together on the top slots in the beginning and the first card had a temp difference of +10 to +15C then the other card.

No one mentioned the 970s is there anything I should watch for if I invest in a pair of those instead?

Those four cards are the reference design and not excessively wide so they can breathe. Some of the cards with dual fans are thicker(especially if they add a backplate) so there might be less room to breathe. But the reference design does get the heat out of the case. I don't see a problem with the 970 but it might put you over budget. Or you can go crazy and look for a deal on a 295x2.

They also make short GTX 960s like the GIGABYTE GV-N960IXOC-2GD or the EVGA 02G-P4-2962-KR

Circuits, yeah I have only two 20A circuits, for what I'm thinking I'll need to move 1 circuit to a better location and add 3 more circuits, one 20A and two 15A, plus another 10,000 BTU LG a/c unit(LW1015ER) in the bedroom, where would the new circuits go? Maybe 2 in the bedroom and the other 3 out here.

Ok, thanks for the helpful post. I'm going to buy two of the ones you recommended and possible one of those short 960s. I forgot about those.

I'll post pics when its up and running.
