My latest machine is simply a black box, a HP Pavilion 152-ea running Windows 8.1.64-bit with Virtual Box 4.3.12 and the CERN Virtual Machines. Since one of them, Atlas@home, needs 2 GB RAM for each task and it can run 4 on the A10-6700 AMD CPU, i upgraded its RAM from 8 to 20 GB by filling all its 4 slots. Very easy.

Ok, so I stand corrected, still that's a nice motherboard, I'd have gone for the 5930K(40 lanes, 5820K cpus only have 28 lanes) and an Asrock X99 OC Formula.

I looked very seriously at that. The problem was the price difference between the chips. All the 5930K gets is extra PCIe lanes and a 200Mhz speed up. It would have cost an extra $300.

Ideal would have been the top of the line chip but I might have to wait for the price to come down. They get less speed (3Ghz) the same 40 PCIe lanes as the 5930K and an extra core/2 threads. It was about $800 more.

My GTX 780's have blown their fans out months ago. They're "passive" cooled now.

See pictures below:

My Rig
(currently running on spare part mobo P9X79-WS, while P9X79WS-E is being in service)

These are not currently used: (Side panel fans are not powerful enough, One Gtx780 GPU does not fit on mobo)

This is The Fan.

… blowing less than an inch away from the 3 GPUs (Their heatpipes recognizable)

What is not visible? -- The Fan is taped up almost completely from the GPU side. It has an opening for the air flow just where the GPUs are. From the fan input (air in) it is taped at the outer rim for to keep the fast moving air inside the fan: The only escape for the air is just where it is supposed to be -- towards the GPU section.

Delidding any 115x after Sandy Bridge definitely helps. Apparently, there are a LOT of chips (AMD too) that have gap issues.

My wife's now defunct 4770K (killed by ASRock's defective crap) had a huge gap. After it died, I practice delidded it before doing the 4790K. The gap was over a mm between the die and the IHS.

If you are interested in seeing that system, scroll up in this thread to a bit less than a year ago.

The fourth board (3rd RMA) on that Z87E-ITX remains untested by me to this day. I'm afraid to put anything on it.

This is why I'm on the most reliable motherboard made today, and certainly paid for that.

I have a EVGA 1200 Watt but it was powering 3 780s before so I knew it could easily handle these monsters. Heat was my biggest concern but they run 10 C cooler than the 780s so, not an issue, lol

Oh yea! I really enjoy building PCs. I just haven't the money to build the monster I would like. The last one I priced on Newegg was around $10,000. I think I set my sights a little high.

Something a little different. 3 980's really heat up my computer room, so I made a custom window fan that tries to pull heat directly from the rooms hotspot, the ceiling, and send it outside.. It works really well, but is a bit noisier than I'd like.

Also, I'm not a carpenter and made it using normal hand tools, so it's far from perfect.. Don't abuse me to much:)

Should have at least 2 4" supply ducts or at least 1 6" so your making good use of the fans, esp since they don't have a huge amount of power to overcome the resistance of the small duct...

If it was me .... I would build the box up both sides of the window (your bottom box doesn't look bad, I'm sure you could do a good job.) Leave it open topped and pull the air from the sides.

You know the problem with modifying your computer, is knowing when to stop...That being said, I continued the mod of the computer I posted earlier. New MoBo ASUS X99-E WS, DDR4 RipJaw 3000 8 x4 GB, an additional Titan X. Switched out the HDD for an SSD, Upgraded the PSU to 1300 Watt EVGA

The case is still the same as is the fan on the window. Only posted the guts.

@Zoom. Yeah summer time brings all sort of new expenses. I'm looking forward to seeing your final products when you get done. Wishing you the best with those.
