Zalster, those pictures remind me of those puzzle pictures where you have to count how many of something you see... I thought I was seeing three graphics cards... but then I scrolled past again and then spotted another!

Batter Up, there is a problem with your rule... what if the cover is always off?! For me a good time to remove dust is when the power is off, but I don't always wait.

Ok, here is a new build I did over the weekend. Took apart another machine but this one supposed to have better air flow. Case is divided into 2 separate compartments. Left side for MB, GPU,CPU,HD. Right for PSU, DVD, SSD, and all the cables. Not going to post all the pics, here is a link for all of them

My current PC is in need of an upgrade cause of a dying motherboard, so far I have a i7 3820 cpu installed in an EVGA X79 Classified, the case will be an Azza 9000B(if I can get one in July as they are out of production) and then a Cooler Master Nepton 140XL or a 280L(I'm not sure yet), Here's the pic of the cpu and motherboard, oh and I paid close to $177 before shipping for the cpu since it came from France, the shipping was $48.40. I'll eventually equip the motherboard with 16GB of 1866MHz G.Skill Ripjaws X ram(2x8GB Dimms), for the moment I'll just transfer My 16GB of 1333MHz Ripjaws X ram. This case allows for expansion that I'll need.

Not with My income level, those cards cost nearly as much as I get per month, no I'm sticking with either 570 or 580 cards, which I have two of now, I know they are not new, for the moment the psu is a Silverstone ST1500 1500w power supply.

A $1000? Wow, that's beyond what I get per month, I'll pass. Besides I have 5 water blocks for either 570 or 580 cards, not the HD types I might add.

I think it is a SuperMicro Mobo but I can't be sure. Too many years have passed, but it is still running. Computers become old, as we do. Now I just ordered a new HP desktop, wtth AMD APU A-10 6700 running at 3.7 GHz, while the Opteron 1210 is till crunching at 1.8 GHz. When I receive it I shall post a picture.

I'm thinking my machine is getting hot because the air flows out onto the ram and is pushed up and back into the cpu fan and therefore it's not so efficient .

Could any of you with this set up give me a idea how much of a difference it makes

And 1 last thing did you make it or can you buy them as i notice it has it looks like it's got some sort of frame ?

The front panel on the SUN WS visible two posts before this is a grid like the radiator of my old Lancia Aprilia. The CPU has a fan and the PSU also. Notice that being on top it does not heat the mbo. There is a fan on the back panel getting air out the box. The instructions on the manual were not to dismount the side panel in order not to disturb the airflow. Since it has been running since January 2008 the instructions were sound.

Yes, if your case has the matching side vent to align with the 'cone' opening. In effect you get another air intake rather than recirculating air with the case.

And if you don't have or can't find a suitable plastic cone... Then with a little care you can easily make your own with scissors, tape and some card. (Take care to ensure there is no additional force put on the heatsink/fan/CPU.)

As a bonus, you may even get your system to be a little quieter also.

Actually, that's Tulio's box.

As for the "cone" thing, that was used in a lot of cases in the early/mid 00's. It is an isolated intake, that leads to, and is flush with, a hole in the side of the case. It kinda prevents what you are talking about by ensuring that only ambient air reaches intake side of the cpu fan. A LOT of Pentium 4 cases had this, especially the smaller constrained cases.

I wish mine had one, because I only have a small space for air intake along the bottom of my power supply. The power supply in my chassis mounts above the motherboard. It's a very nice Mini-ITX chassis here, but, it's tight inside. Maximum thermal solution size here is 80mm. My current heat sink is sitting at 71mm high with the aftermarket 25mm thick fan (it came with a sleeve bearing 12mm thick fan with half the flow of the current fan). The keep-out zone for air intake is not that large.

Go ahead and delete those, I'm going to try using photobucket instead. Uploading now. I wish I had some current pics, as this doesn't show the fan upgrade to the heatsink. I'm not pulling that stuff out again until it's time to dust out the fins, probably this winter. Although other brands are starting to get the fan filters, Lian Li has been doing them for years. It doesn't stop the small dust though, and a couple/few times a year, you have to blow out the fine stuff.
