Not good news. Longer version here, US Deep South snow storm maroons motorists, will we hear the end of this with reference to "Global #@3$%* Warming" Georgia Highway And typical officaldom, Despite ample weather warnings, school officials waited until the middle of Tuesday when snow was already falling to send students home on routes where traffic was grinding to a halt. |

Not good news. Such wimps down there. That little dusting wouldn't even faze us. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Not good news. Okay, I'll cut them a little slack. They had a thick layer of ice under that snow. Even we have trouble with that. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Not good news. The "Light dusting" that was not supposed to stick left 1/4 inch of ice under 2 inches of snow on the roads. All wheel drive vehicles had no problem. Front wheel drive cars had little problem. Rear wheel cars mostly got stuck. I spent a few hours pulling cars and light trucks up a nearby hill with my Outback. The three winters I spent in Charleston SC, it snowed for about 1 week each January. My Dad, having grown up in Wisconsin, taught all of us kids how to drive in snow and ice. That skill, and a heavy Ford E-100 van, got me safely through those winters, and pulled a lot of my Shipmates and Carolina Cowboy pickups out of the swamps around Charleston. Other than my first accident (which was on ice the first winter after I got my license) the times I most scared myself driving were the year I had a van. I hated that thing. Finally we are getting a break. Thursady it will go up to 24, And then the next few days we should be in the low to mid 30's. with hardly any wind. YEEHA. A heat wave. At last some normal temps. And witht he sun it should start melting the hard packed snow. The ;ast few days weve had sun but its so cold even with my black driveway the snow wont melt. And I know we northeners laugh at the folks down south when they get a tad of snow and go bonkers. But to be fair they dont have the equipment or the knowledge to be able to deal with it, Let alone on how to drive in it. And we shouldnt be (snow) smug. Look at all the fender benders and cars in the ditch when that first snow fall happens up here. And black ice scares the crap out of me. I totaled a 1985 GMC pick up on black ice. And I was only 100 feet from my driveway.
Old James |

Julie's pollution post in the Pun thread made me think... If Tom Lehrer had ever performed his song Pollution in London, he might have customized the lines toward the end with "The breakfast garbage that you throw into the Thames... they drink at lunch down at Southend." (He always customized those lines to the city he was performing in. In the case of the linked recording, he was in San Francisco.) (Of course, if he'd performed it in London, he might also have changed the first line of the song to something other than "If you visit American city..." I'm also not sure if they would have picked up on his Mexican accent.) David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

I cant describe how wonderfull it felt getting out of work and the temp was 27 F. Very little wind. It felt like a heat wave. Its amazing how you can get used to low temps. maybe my humidifier can catch up in the house. When the furnace isnt running all the times I can keep a constant 40-45% in the house. But the last few weeks Ive been steady at 28% And using over 7 gallons of water a day. My wife asked me if maybe we should buy another. Im really thinking about it.
Old James |

Turned out we only got 6 to 7 inches. Plus, they're no longer saying Sunday will be quite as cold as they were saying earlier. Still, it will be below normal all week, with a single digit high on Thursday and <0 that night. Chicago gets 10" and copes - in the UK we get a couple of inches and its a national emergency!! I don't get paid leave. I have to make it up at the end of the school year. Anyone who works all year has to either work or take a vacation day. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
