Oh absolutely (hi Batterup :)) it's the term that was used as grounds ie: that his income was not "earnings from gainful employment" which to me suggests a legal precedent has been set for any unemployed father (currently paying around 11% of their £45 a week benefit) to not have to pay anything at all either. You are reading "earnings from gainful employment" to broadly; with your reading all pensioners, annuitants and trust fund babies would also be exempt. The court read it more narrowly as to be a know income over a known time. If a trust fund baby wants a broader definition she will have to go to court.

Odd... a father receiving unemployment benefits has to contribute. That is because he receives a known amount on a known day so the court knows how much he can pay. A poker player never knows how much she may win or lose on a given day. So the court reasoned they could not order child support under the current law as it is written. Easy fix change the law.

What a society, run down so called "feckless" fathers... Wow. Court of appeal judges too! A professional poker player who "declines to support his children" has won a legal fight after arguing that his winnings are not "earnings from gainful employment". Odd... a father receiving unemployment benefits has to contribute. |

Isn't modern society & education grand! Online insults What I find disgusting is... "Where teachers did report such attacks, the survey claimed head teachers took no action in 40% of cases where the insults were from pupils and in 55% of cases where they were believed to be from parents." In that case, why the need for head teachers? They don't seem to be serving any useful purpose! Edit: What hours do teachers really work? "The biggest cause of unnecessary paperwork, the teachers reported, was preparing for an Ofsted inspection. Head teachers also identified changing government policies and guidelines as generating "unnecessary" bureaucracy." |

There is a lot to be said for decimalisation! Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Wouldn't they have worked down to farthings (¼d) Ahh, well if they did that then yes, £1 6s 7¼d. On the other hand if only whole pennies, then 556 farthings (the remainder) is 139d or 11s and 7d. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Wouldn't they have worked down to farthings (¼d) LOL. was just checking on that... farthings ceased to be legal tender on December 31st 1960. So the correct total would be £1 6s 7.25d as it was from 1903. |

That's what I made it... 739x240=177,360 + 143 (11s 11d) = 177,503 /556 = 319.25 240 = £1 leaving 79.25 /12 = 6.60 [the .60 = 7.2d) ... £1 6s 7d |

Or to give them several escape suggestions if they rob the place. There'd still be a couple of ds lying around. By my math the remainder for Q3 is 11s and 7d. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Or to give them several escape suggestions if they rob the place. By the way, the answer to arithmetic question 2 is £667,990 14s 9d, took me a couple of minutes with a pen and paper, but not that hard in itself. Question 3 (divide £739 11s 11d by 556) took me a little longer, but it's £1 6s 7d, remainder 11s 5d. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Something like this would really throw modern kids a curve... :-) Probably none - other than moneylaundering perhaps - you know... should they manage to climb the promotion ladder :) |

Something like this would really throw modern kids a curve... :-) One of those questions was "Trace the course of the following rivers, Loire, Mississippi, Rhine, Seine and Vistula." Now i'm a great believer in knowledge for its own sake, but what use is the above to a bank teller? Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Something like this would really throw modern kids a curve... :-) Because countries use Imperial measurements does not mean they are backward. I've been using metric since 1961, long before most of the UK, and I still prefer Imperial measurements for a lot of things. And in a lot of cases, especially in the building industry, the use of metric measurements just confuses the issue. Doors are still multiples of 3 inches, timber is still 2 by 4 etc, and sheets of ply and drywall are 8 ft * 4 ft, no matter what they are advertised as in metric, even on the continent. |
