Maybe to satisfy those of us who are wondering whether anything interesting has been discovered yet an occasional update from the seti@home team is in order. If if it is only to say that nothing has been found. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. Hmmn, great idea...finally a Change in Attitude for SETI@HOME. It is quite understandable the aliens stay quiet n don't respond...but it defies logic as to why S@H behaves in the same manner. (There are some things that everybody thinks and nobody says and other things that everybody says and nobody thinks.) Maybe now the next best thing to do would be to think on the procedure of collecting storing processing analyzing and finally resulting... (Never be afraid to try something new. very very happy to finally see some of the real big guns at Seti@Home asking questions and introspecting... I simply love the S@H project..but..disheartened in a way with it. i am a new member, recently joined in, and proud to be a Setizen... although S@H has probably the biggest n largest amount of members, still i observed that people do join in, crunch for a while n then just go silent n wither away. it is great to make new members but equally important to retain the old ones as well.. even though this would be my last week crunching for S@H as i am going to fade away like alot of others... BUT I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A POINT.THE ONLY REASON THAT KEPT ME WITH S@H UPTIL THIS TIME WAS JUST THE GOOD N KIND N SWEET FOLKS THAT I MET N HAD A CHANCE TO CONVERSE WITH AT THE FORUMS..THEY ALL ARE SO WELCOMING N WARM N NICE. even the mods are good enough, although at times i was a little annoyed with them, but they do their jobs perfectly.. just wish S@H would go ahead n atleast try to be a little more resiprocative and not make this a one way affair. |

i have a question for Mr. Kevvy I don't think so. There are the original tapes from Arecibo but I am unsure how often they are reused and overwritten. So, more reason to get the results posted and correlated ASAP so that possible findings aren't lost. ![]() |

I'll second that motion. They need to keep us somewhat interested in what our computers are doing or they may find the "at home" part of the equation will vaporize. I very strongly feel that the name of this thread should be changed... instead of "Let's see some results!"..it should be changed to "Results!" because I am getting more technical information from this thread alone compared to all or any other threads... this is just what I need...great work people...Please keep up the good work...!! |

to Chris... well, I forgot to add that with the technical aspects, I am also provided with intellectual clarity on this thread... rather than reading out some technical jargon stuff it is always better to talk or converse with a human being. it would be great if S@H declares you as an official P.R. or spokesperson n hopefully you will get paid for your good work... and as far as I am concerned I have already put you on that level on a personal liking... maybe if you keep going on and explaining n clarifying about S@H so generously n nicely, it might just be a matter of time before S@H makes you an Official PR. |

Just what kind of results do people want to see? Obviously, if an intelligent signal is detected and confirmed by the seti@home project I would expect news of the discovery printed here first. Then maybe a list of the number of possible signals. But I am afraid that unless you are into the project for the long haul you will lose interest and seek the fame and glory of being the first to detect ET somewhere else. I hope there are people in the seti community that are devising new strategies to find evidence of ET elsewhere in our galaxy. Most likely a signature of non natural activity near a star. Our most likely candidates for being detected by ET are not our weak radio transmissions but rather our atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons. Maybe our best chance of getting noticed was in the 1950's. Following that thought if we really want to get noticed now maybe detonating large thermonuclear bombs on the far side of the moon when it is facing away from the sun would grab ET's attention. A negative result is no less significant than a hit. In terms of what we know about civilizations advanced enough to transmit powerful signals, we have a data point of exactly one. Consider we've had this ability for a very short span of time, relatively. Consider we'll probably not be using radio much longer, relatively. I think it's reasonable to expect FTL communication will precede FTL travel of physical objects, and this will happen relatively soon. The most advanced civilizations almost certainly do not live on planets in the "bright" and dangerous regions of galaxies, where they would be subject to hazards of nearby energetic events such as supernovas and neutron star collisions. They most likely live inside vast artificial structures located far from galaxy centers, and while their origins were probably biological, they are most likely non-biological. The cosmos is almost 14 billions years in age, and civilizations at our stage of development could have existed as far back as 9 billions ago. If any one of them were so inclined to "colonize" the galaxy, that task was completed a very long time ago. Therefore our apparent isolation is almost certainly artificial. This is all conjecture, of course, and science literally demands we make whatever observations our capability allows. Therefore I am happy to support SETI both with computing resources and donations, and I urge others to do so as well. Feedback would be a big plus, in my opinion. Yes, I would like to know about the "almosts". I would like to know what part of the sky is being observed. I would like to know how many false hits are generated by man-made signals. Even if some would consider all this data nothing more than "noise", I would nonetheless like to have it. You never know, there may be a subtle pattern in the noise which is being overlooked in the focus on finding a verifiable single point-source signal. |

I started with SETI several years ago. Then I had to quit for a few years. Now back. I don't know if I missed something or haven't gone through all of the site's info, but way back when I first started, you could see a vertical chart of the project or a page with numbers crunching etc. I had no clue what any of it meant, but it was fun looking at it, and made me feel like I was actually doing something. Was that discontinued, or have I not looked in the right place for it? |

If you mean the screen saver I think you have to use Seti@home classic. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

I've had it several times with my Win 7 computer. Without any reason, the system turned the screensaver off. I first choose another screensaver and then the Boinc screensaver again, otherwise it won't work. Maybe it's a typical Windows thing, like when the computer reboots for no reason, no updates or anything... rOZZ Music Pictures |
