SETIspirit v2.1.0 is released I'm happy to publish SETIspirit v2.1.0 with new features, many improvements and an important bugfix for the workunit statistics. N E W   F E A T U R E S High Score Monitor SETIspirit v2.1.0 extends the possibility to monitor the workunit analysis with the new high score monitor. The high score monitor shows the score- and peak power high scores of the workunits in slot 0 to 9, changes of the values can be displayed flashing. Workunits Started Report The new workunits started report shows the start time, the start date and the slot of all started workunits. BOINC News Ticker BOINC messages can now be viewed with the "BOINC Live Messages" window or with the "BOINC News Ticker". The "BOINC Live Messages" window will be refreshed every second and is always the topmost window. To update the "BOINC Live Messages" window SETIspirit needs to access the BOINC logfile every second. The "BOINC Live Messages" window is a good option to view the BOINC messages for a short time, e.g. if you have used the update project command. The "BOINC News Ticker" scrolls the latest 25 BOINC messages in the ticker window, the latest message is shown with a white forecolor. The "BOINC News Ticker" will be refreshed every 30 seconds without the need for an additional file access to the BOINC logfile, therefore you can leave this window always open if you like. Autostart Delay SETIspirit can be started with the operating system, if the autostart option is selected. To avoid high utilization problems during the startup of the operating system, the SETIspirit autostart will now be delayed from 60 to 360 seconds. The default delay time is 180 seconds (setable in the autostart options). I M P R O V E M E N T S · the workunit reports will be opened immediately and the records are much faster loaded (wu's requested/received/started and finished) · the analysis results window will be opened immediately and the records are much faster loaded (workunit analysis results) · the analysis results window includes a new reload button, which gets a red border if an update is available · the sums of the analysis monitor will be updated immediately after the completion of a workunit (instead of every 3 minutes) · improved calculation of the week statistics: the calculation includes only the lapsed days of the week (average workunits per day this week) · improved calculation of the month statistics: the calculation includes only the lapsed days of the month (average workunits per day this month) · improved calculation of the year statistics: the calculation includes only the lapsed months of the year (average workunits per month) · the SETIspirit forum link is updated (found in the SETIspirit help menu and the project command button) · when exiting SETIspirit all windows are closed before the splash outro form is showed (except the main window) B U G F I X E S · enhanced workunit analysis recording which fixed an issue of missing analysis results · the workunit statistics could crash or hang up the SETIspirit application, if you have more than 32767 workunits completed As always your comments and suggestions are welcome! Best regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

no version for Linux? Sorry, no there isn't a linux version of SETIspirit available as there is no cross compiler for Visual Basic available. I'm not able to maintain 2 different projects of this size (SETIspirit is a one man development). Regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Thanks for the update! It has definitely become a mainstay on my desktop! Regards, Wes |

Thanks to all users for their feedback which motivates me to further develop SETIspirit. I am happy about every objective criticism which has often led to new features or improvements for us all. Regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Is there a reason why you choose to display only slots 0-9? With cores and hyper threading and multiple work units running on a GPU you will max out 0-9 real quick... |

Is there a reason why you choose to display only slots 0-9? With cores and hyper threading and multiple work units running on a GPU you will max out 0-9 real quick... Good question. I think 10 slots are enough in 97% of cases. With a single cpu you have a maxium of 8 cores. With a GPU you have 2 slots left (without a dedicated core). But I also see there are some profi gpu crunchers which are running more workunits on a GPU. How many slots do you need? At this point I would like to start a poll, how many slots do you need? Are 10 Slots enough? I would imagine to increase the number of slots available in SETIspirit later. Thanks for your feedback. Regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

There already CPU`s running 12 threads plus 2 or more GPUs. Autodetection would be best IMHO. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

I use 10 slots already and once my next video upgrade happens that will increase to at least 13 if not more. I also agree with Mike, autodetection would be for the best. Cheers. |

Volunteers who run multiple projects, and allow BOINC to switch between them, could use many more slot directories than they have physical resources. |

I use 10 slots already and once my next video upgrade happens that will increase to at least 13 if not more. Actualy i use more than 10 slots in some hosts too, yes Mike sugestion of autodetection is the best choice. Just a tip, in your home page on the DL section, the image of the Arecebo Observatory (at the top right of the page) is wrong, what you show is not Arecibo, but that´s has nothing to do with the good software you develop. :) |

Example primary rig: 3930k = 12 threads 1 780 ti = 3 gpu work units 1 760 = 2 gpu work units 1 760 = 2 gpu work units 19 slots needed. Example secondary rig: 4770k = 8 threads 1 680 = 2 gpu work units 1 680 = 2 gpu work units 1 igpu = 1 gpu work unit 13 slots needed. I don't have typical computers though... I do see that you probably based it off a 4 core 8 thread and 1 gpu running 2 work units, but lets face it people running distributed computing aren't typical =x |

The way I've viewed the development of SETIspirit so far is that Dirk has chosen 10 slots as it fits his needs. If Dirk decides to implement 10+ slots either statically or dynamically because of user feedback may I suggest individuals that are capable of testing 10+ slot scenarios indicate to Dirk a willingness to test SETIspirit while Dirk is implementing this feature. (unless you have already done so) I sugesst this as my current system is nowhere near capable of testing for 10 slots even with multiple projects running. |

The way I've viewed the development of SETIspirit so far is that Dirk has chosen 10 slots as it fits his needs. Actually, anybody with more than 10 "in progress" tasks can test. If a running task is suspended, its slot must be preserved so BOINC creates a new slot and starts another task. You can repeat that action until there's a slot for each task in your cache, if you want to push it that far. Joe |

Poll about the slots in SETIspirit Thanks for the interesting posts. I will definitely increase the number of supported slots and include this feature request in the SETIspirit roadmap. However, since I'm currently working on other features, it may take a few more weeks. Nevertheless I would appreciate the willingness of one or two users, who wants to test a beta version of SETIspirit with an increased number of slots. These testers should have hosts that are permanently crunches more than 10 workunits a time. The beta test work without much effort by simply replacing the SETIspirit.exe file. What I need is your feedback, if the program works as it should. This exchange of information also allows to actively participate in the development of SETIspirit. After the first reflection I consider to increase the number of supported slots to 30. As always, I'm happy about your comments and feedback. Regards, Dirk SETIspirit Homepage |

Autodetection is the best choice, 30 is not enought in some cases (24 cores processor + few Gpu´s for example - not common of course). |
