A quick question. Being a beginner here I was wondering if there was a way to increase the rate of processing. Can you do more tasks more often by having or downloading special software or something along those lines? If yes, what would that be?

You can install a third-party 'optimized' application that should help you finish work faster by taking advantage of specific processor instruction sets. See this topic over in Number Crunching for more information.
