Wiggo - don't say it so loudly, we want it to be a surprise. That way Bernie can't hide it before we get there ;-)

A friend of mine is a retired phone repair guy. In his last years, he specialized in old-school high quality data lines (I forget what they were called, but they were one step up from ISDN; they commonly were/are used for things like lottery ticket terminals). Anyway, he more than once explained that when he wanted to do a quick continuity test on a line, he would call the office and someone would put a short on the pair. If his meter read continuity in the field, the line was good and the problem was probably customer equipment (i.e., not our fault and you owe us for the service call, and if you want me to trace the problem on your property, that's an additional charge per hour).

Once, he had a bad pair somewhere and there was one spare pair in the box, but it was assigned to a pay phone. The phone itself didn't exist, but somehow the customer was making money off of it and wouldn't give up the line. He used the pair anyway.

Another time, they went out to paint the location of a buried cable that served a whole strip mall. They had been called because the owner of the apartment complex backing on the strip mall wanted to install a fence. You call to have the underground utilities located before you dig and if the utility gets it wrong, it's their own fault, but if you start digging without calling and damage something, you have to pay for it. Well, the fencing contractors saw this line painted on the ground and thought it was where the fence was supposed to go. They dug post holes every so many feet all the way down the line. My friend was part of the crew that installed the new cable.

When my father was a kid, there were two phone companies in town, Indiana Bell and I forget the name of the other; it ended up being GTE, probably Verizon now. If you were on one and the house next door was on the other, it was a long distance call. His grandmother was the operator for one of them. Once, she got a long distance call for the church pastor on the rectory's number. She was obligated to ring there, even though she knew he was in the church. So she hollered out the window for my father to go the church and tell him to go to the rectory and answer the phone.

And if you've ever heard of the infamous Chicago Tunnel Railway (source of the Great Chicago Flood of 1993), it started out as a phone company, or at least that's what it was chartered as. It had rotary dial phones MUCH earlier than AT&T did, but of course it was driven out of the phone business.

Okay, back to your (bleah) beer.

As an apprentice I went to a house where the phone did not work because the lady of the house had removed the "unsightly" wire that "only went into the ground"

And I bet when you told her the phone needed that wire to work, she told you something along the lines of "nonsense!"

Beer O'clock finished here an hour ago. :-(

But after having something to eat It's now Rum O'clock.

Julie, I've never tried it myself, but some silly mates of mine reckon that Beer O'clock + antibiotics = a good time. O-o

Cheers.

After seeing some of the results of my silly mates I wouldn't consider it myself, but apparently they think that they had fun.

Cheers.

Strangely the last course of antibiotics I was prescribed had a warning leaflet as long as your arm telling you all the things you should and should not do along with a massive list of possible side effects, yet no where on this yard long list of doom was there any mention of alcohol !

Depends on the antibiotic, most have no reaction to alcohol, Penicillin based ones for example.
However, there's a class of antibiotics based on Azoles (Metronidazole is one) with which one must not drink at all as they inhibit the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme, which if ethanol is present leads to a build up of ethanal in your system, this is a bad thing.
Of course, if you're not sure, then best to avoid alcohol, but a good doctor should know the difference and advise accordingly.
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

One of the patients on chemo when I was on it got
caught drinking so the doctor took that person off
the drugs. Seems she got caught doing it a few times.
