Just for your information.
Cats recognise their owners' voices but never evolved to care, says study

Well, of the cats I've been around:

Misty cared.

Sheba cared.

Einstein and Cali cared. (Though Cali cared less than the others; but she cared.)

Misty, and Einstein even came when called. If Sheba was outside, all I had to do was tap on the glass door, (back yard), in a certain manner and she would come running to be let in.

Was the next thing that happened usually dinner?

No, not usually... They just came when I called... When they came to me I would reward them with hugs and pets and the usual love that I gave them...

+1

All my critters have selected hearings at times.
Some times in the evening we have to resort to a spoon on a tin to bring Tinkerbell in.
I don't think she is sure about Humans in general. When we rescued her, she was only four weeks old on a very cold October night. She scratches at my window to be let in and comes into my room to give me visual signals that would like to go outside.
Pluto will always be a planet to me.

Baby settled between my legs earlier this evening.

Even in my lap, he won't let me pet him.

Tinker won't even do that, but she will confirm verbally, I would like to go outside.

There is a raccoon (sort of) in Google's Thanksgiving Doodle.

Message 1448403 - Posted: 29 Nov 2013, 18:04:51 UTC

Another close encounter at my house last night. The raccoon was inside on the table eating cat food, as usual, and the dogs ran out from the bedroom, barking, as usual. Apparently this time one of the dogs was blocking the doggie door, so the raccoon ran through the other doggie door, which leads from the kitchen into the laundry room. But there is no other exit from the laundry room, so the raccoon was trapped. Fortunately, my dogs won't go through the kitchen-laundry room doggie door, so the raccoon was safe. Just trapped. I had to put the dogs in the bedroom with the door closed. Then I opened the door between the kitchen and laundry room and waited. Eventually the poor little thing came out and, when it realized I was standing there, it went outside through doggie door number one.

I'm really going to have to start taking some pictures when things like this happen.

Hello friends. As many of you have guessed from the picture Eric posted, Ol' Pookers and I went up to Northern Wisconsin to visit his parents for the Thanksgiving Holiday. We got home very late last night. Eric went into work today, but I was smart enough to take one more vacation day at home... Mount Laundry awaits me.

My mother-in-law feeds a wide variety of wild birds through the winter. I was delighted to discover that chickadees are extremely "trusting." (Eric would argue "dumb.") Either way, it did not take much to train them to land on my hand.

They look like this up close:

I am impressed Angela. We regularly get black capped chickadees at our feeders, but they are probably the most easily spooked of all the birds we usually get. My wife and I call our chickadees our "dine and dash" birds, because that is what they do.

House sparrows, on the other hand, peck at our window when the window feeder is empty. And then stare right back at you if you stare at them.

Dude!!! Way to add to my "mystique"...

Ok Bill. Here is what you need to do to impress the heck out of your wife. Wait until the feeder is empty, then pull up a chair near your feeder. Your chickadees will not come to you if there are easier "pickings" available, so it is absolutely critical that the feeder be empty. Sit down and get comfortable, because day one it will take a little time. Hold out a handful of seeds and be very still. You will probably get lots of flutter-by action initially, but eventually the bravest (stupidest???) chickadee will dive-bomb your hand and make off with a seed. Once his/her flock-mates realize that you are providing food, you will start getting more dive-bombings and eventually some brief landings. After the birds become acclimated to brief landings, they will naturally increase the lengths of their stays. The little fellow Eric caught on camera actually picked up and discarded 4 or 5 seeds before he finally found the perfect one and flew away.

It started out slow, but by the end of the week every bird in the flock outside my mother-in-law's window had been trained to eat out of my hand. (Yes... Wisconsin is EXACTLY that exciting during deer hunting week when it is unsafe to venture far outdoors.)

Anyway, you know my motto. If you feed them, they will come...

Interestingly a quote form the Wiki.

The Black-capped Chickadee is a small, North American songbird, a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is the state bird of both Maine and Massachusetts in the United States, and the provincial bird of New Brunswick in Canada. It is notable for its capacity to lower its body temperature during cold winter nights, its good spatial memory to relocate the caches where it stores food, and its boldness near humans (they can feed from the hand).
