I know it varies by area, but I am just wondering what would be the aproximate cost of running SETI 24/7 on one pc. I know i am not giving you guys a lot to go on, but i just want aproximate costs.

thanks

Your 2 desktops and laptop would be around 500 bucks (US) a year. Ballpark. Make that a large ballpark:)

For one PC drawing 1000 Watts from the wall plug, daily run cost would be 24 times your cost per kwh. A 3 year old CBC article pegged the average electricity cost per kwh in Fredericton at 11.2 cents Canadian, giving about $2.69 daily cost.

That 1000 Watts would give about 900 Watts out of a modern efficient power supply, so a fairly high end crunching machine. Scale down for more typical systems.

Don't neglect the 3412 BTUs of heat produced by each kwh of electricity. Given New Brunswick weather, for much of the year that would lower the burden on your main heating system.

For a while, I was running 1 rig 24/7 with 2 GPU's and 4 cores, with an additional 2 laptops with 1 GPU and 4 cores each running on weekends/nights.

This seemed to raise my electric bill by $20-$30 per month. Not a big deal compared to the mountains of cash people donate a month with better rigs/donations, but still a lot of money.

I decided to quit the laptops and only run GPU work units on my 24/7 rig in an effort to reduce my bill.

Relieved to see my guesstimate backed up by someone like Joe:)

If you halve his 1000W example (and seeing how US/CA exchange rate is pretty close) you get about 500 Canadian dollars per year. Of course you'd need a Killawatt to figure out exactly how much juice your 3 machines are pulling, but it should be around 500 watts.

Which is why I only run my older crunchers when it's colder. A kWh of power warms a room the same whether it's from an electric heater, or blowing out the back of a PC. So when it's cold I can fire up some PCs, and leave the heater off.

Now if you are running air-con in summer, it's double the problem. Not only are you using the kW or power, you are probably using ANOTHER kW in the air-con system to get rid of that extra heat.

This is why Google has been building data centres in cooler places, easier to get rid of the heat in a cool climate, so much less power usage if refrigeration isn't needed, on top of the power being used by the servers.

I can't be exact, as electricity prices in the UK go up in an obscene manner, to satisfy the greed of the power companies, but, I reckon that my S@H crunching was costing about £8 - £10 per week. That was before V7. With the same time spent crunching, the S@H creds dropped like a stone (even using Opti Apps) to about 1/3rd of their previous 'value'. I now run my PCs less - more so since my 6870 'needs' an old driver to run S@H under XP32. Unfortunately, I can no longer see any point for running an older driver, for a GPU for one application, when most of it's time is spent running other things, which need the later drivers.
