China ticks off the US

"He also demanded that the US "earnestly respect China's national security [and] stop making irresponsible remarks for China's setup of the East China Sea Air Defence Identification Zone"."

No longer a request but a demand?

Perhaps China's looking to build an Empire soon, start by taking over a sniffy
little Island today then Europe tomorrow...OK as long as they stop on the French
side of the ENGLISH channel.

Better start rebuilding Hadrian's Wall then as Scotland will soon be weak and defenceless :)

Why would China begin a war with Japan? They wouldn't gain anything with it. It would have severe economic repercussions, and while it currently has civil unrest under control, having the economy take a big downturn could well change people's attitude towards their government.

All those risks for a few islands? Unlikely.

The islands are not the important bit, it is the undersea resources near the Islands that is the important area.

China is also in dispute with the other countries around the South China Sea over the ownership of islands, notably the Spratly Islands, about fishing and resources rights.

Indeed. But even with supposed underseas resources China stands to lose more than it gains if they go for open war against a country like Japan or the Philliphines.

I would suggest Nick, that Japan is a bit more than just a sniffy little Island! It is supported militarily by the US. If China picks a fight with Japan they also pick one with America. And we all thought WWIII would be between Russia and America.

Who said they were? I'm referring to the chain of Islands that both China and
Japan lay claims to...just sniffy little islands.

Can i point out that Japan is made up of four main islands and about two dozen smaller ones.

China has a population of ~1.35 billion, and a land area of ~3.75 million square miles. Population density ~360/sq.m

Japan has a population of ~127 million and an area of ~145k square miles. Population density ~876/sq.m, or 2.5x that of China.

I think Japan needs the islands more.

Ah, now I see! You did say "Island" not Islands, and in the context of this new air controlled zone from China that Japan is having none of, it was fair to assume what I did. You meant this lot of course.

Disputed Islands.

But we must be careful here Nick in condemning this dispute. Else the Brits could be reminded that we have a similar situation with Gibraltar and the Falklands, which we most certainly don't find sniffy :-))

Ah, but I haven't condemned this dispute, my point was, "Is China looking to
Empire build", first stop those disputed Islands.

One might very well think so, but they wouldn't possibly comment!

Getting iffy out there

Yes Minister. By the way, Minister, "How's your Mandarin language course going"?

Very well, thank you for asking. But I am more interested in Cantonese, so that I can tell the ex pats Chinese to inform their Government, not to try any cute moves on the UK!

A reasonable request, and close down all their Chinese takeaways here if they
fail to comply.

The point is I doubt that the people of China give a fig about the islands, it's all down to the Chinese Government wanting to huff and puff for its own reasons.

Yup, par for the course....

war of nerves as the US and its allies seek to test China's true intentions and how far it is prepared to go in enforcing the new zone.

I don't trust China, but they will not harm the U.S.

Maybe not now or in the short future. We owe them to much debt for them to cripple us economicaly. They need us to buy their prducts to keep them going.
But when the day comes that China dosent need to sell to the US, Lookout.
They will demand that we pay them back. I predict our economy will collaspe and will cease to be a world power.

China, for now, also needs the western world to feed them. If and when that changes, all bets are off.

Does anyone else see a parralell to what happend with Japan in the early 20th centuary?

Japan had to be forcibly dragged into modern times, And then wanted an Empire just as fast.

Sometimes maybe we should let sleeping dogs lay.

Chinas latest antics

South Korea claims a submerged rock, known as Ieodo, also within the zone.
Why? What's the use of a submerged rock?
