I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years and have seen this type of issue more than once. Burkley is supposed to have smart people running the show..What engineer in their right mind would specify a UPS and or Gen set that could not handle environmental support along with the servers.. Lights and temp are just as important as the servers unless it is only designed to handle power while the servers shut down automatically. ![]() |

I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years Hard to support SETI for more than 15 years when they are just coming up on their 15th Ani in April 2014. |

I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years Not if you are a member of the Planetary Society. ![]() |

I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years He said SETI, not Seti@Home. I, too, am a Charter Member of the Planetary Society. Ooooh, I need to renew my membership. Thanks for the nudge. (8{) Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years While he did say SETI and not SETI@home, he also complained about seeing issues more than once, suggesting to at least me, that he believed he was part of SETI@home longer than 15 years. If the two thoughts were unrelated, a separation of the two would have been nice. Otherwise I fail to see the reason in pointing out supporting SETI for 15+ years when complaining about server issues with SETI@home. |

I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years Well, with a Join Date of October 99, he's been with the project longer than either of us, so I'm not gonna be fussy about his math. But after rereading his comments, I think he forgets that while the folks at Berkeley ARE smarter than the average Golden Bears, they have been constrained from the beginning by funding and available space. No matter how good an engineer you are, the installation has to fit within the available facilities and resources. Seti@Home, even housed at UC Berkeley, ain't Google or Amazon. I have been supporting SETI for more than 15 years What all of you are forgetting is the date you quote is the date that the first work unit went out. Seti@Home existed for some considerable time before that. The Planetary Society had a fund raising drive for the seed money to get the project off the ground, pay for the telescope time so there was a first work unit to send out, pay the programmers to write the code, build the radio receiver, and the like. It funded the projects that came before Seti@Home, many of which are still ongoing at Berkeley. http://seti.berkeley.edu/ Those of us who are charter members should be displaying a SETI join date in 1980/1, a decade before Seti@home sent out the first work unit. If you care about SETI or space and have a few $ to spare I suggest you join The Planetary Society, but make your donation here first. ![]() |

What all of you are forgetting is the date you quote is the date that the first work unit went out. Seti@Home existed for some considerable time before that. But certainly you can't complain about server problems before the servers are considered "live"...? I still don't understand the reason in pointing out supporting SETI for 15+ years on the SETI@home site. |

FWIW, my BOINC just got a new AstroPulse task for the first time since the outage. :-) Not that it had meny before that either, I just started two weeks ago and am now also running Rosetta@home. Still awaiting validation for two AP's that I finished before the outage. |

.. Lights and temp are just as important as the servers unless it is only designed to handle power while the servers shut down automatically. That is pretty much the case, only the servers don't shut down automatically. They are shut down manually. In the case of Seti@Home, that's a major necessity because the interplay of the various servers, tables, and scripts is so complex. Not that I see any point in responding to you, since I doubt you'll come back to see if there are any answers to your whine. I see it took until the 15th to clear the power outage from the IST list. ![]() |

It would be interesting to hear what broke in Marvin. Probably all the diodes down the left side. |
