The ENGLISH speak ENGLISH, because they LIVE in ENGLAND. I never said Americans spoke proper english only that the english don't Lets not forget that you have so many regional variants in the US that make it a wholey difficult thing for a New Englander to talk to a resident of West Texas. I had grown up in Southern Michigan which along with Northern Ohio have the least accented English. I moved to North Texas and had the misfortunte of meeting and speaking to a West Texas transplant as my first Texas Conversation. I felt like I was dropped in China. Didn't understand a word he said. I can now translate for others when the need arises. Now back to the topic of bashing the English. Talking aside. did anyone ever tell you the rest of the civilized world drives on the right side of the road. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

The ENGLISH speak ENGLISH, because they LIVE in ENGLAND. The SCOTS speak SCOTS because they live in SCOTLAND. AMERICANS speak AMERICAN, because they live in AMERICA, but like to pretend they speak English... These are three major dialectic variants of a common base language which is coincidentally called "English". But in each case there are many variations in the way it is spoken dependant upon where you are at the time of your linguistic encounter - imagine someone who's only encounter spoken English was the "BBC English" of the 1950s trying to understand a person from say Newcastle Upon Tyne in full flow on a Friday night, then being faced with a Cornish fisherman explaining that he was delayed by a bad storm... Their form of english was brought about by lofty egotistical Aristocrats in the late 1800's. The Victorian Era had absolutely nothing to do with it. English language history Where on earth did you go to school? I was born in 1965 and am currently living in Texas Well that explains it all then. The Dictionary of the English Language was the first full featured English dictionary. Samuel Johnson published the authoritative work in 1755. To a high degree, the dictionary standardized both English spelling and word usage. Meanwhile, grammar texts by Lowth, Murray, Priestly, and others attempted to prescribe standard usage even further. |

I love how the English think that they actually speak English. Their form of english was brought about by lofty egotistical Aristocrats in the late 1800's. It eventually spread across that country and the main port cities in the US. The brits that were booted (notice I didn't was we, my family wasn't here then) out of the colonies didn't speak in such lofty tones. Get over yourselves ; ) And don'te get me started on the Q's in all their words. YOu may as well be french In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

The original poster Dull said As The Internet Saying Goes: Get A Life. Well we could say Pot, kettle & black! It was obviously a poke at UK posters, but that's fine with me, Quite happy to stand up for myself. If the odds become 10 to 1, I'll go away and live to fight another day. No point in being silly about it. |

Personnaly I take no offense at US bashing. But I do ask that you take no offense when I bash yours:) Providing the bashing is deserved, I have a hide like a rhinocerous. :) T.A. |

The "USA" is a fantasy, like "Brangelina", Paris Hilton, or the Kardashians. I beg to differ. We can at the moment still destroy the world, But come Monday midnight and then we are broke. And speaking of fiscally, We are a house of cards that even Russia can now beat. ( as long as they can still hold eastern Europe ransom for winter fuel that is) Personnaly I take no offense at US bashing. But I do ask that you take no offense when I bash yours:) [/quote]Old James |

English/UK Citizens have Nothing To Do. You are partly right Dull, some have nothing better to do, even with a few bob in their pocket. It is the way of the world today, sadly. So you ought to get out more instead of staying in stuffy buildings full of drunks and perverts, that's bad for your health. |

Wow, that's gotta be a first. An admission that one is amongst the top 5 trolls. Thanks for your honesty :) As you were laddie. Now then, what was it he keeps saying? Um ah, finks, oh I know, bingo! "Oooh, I got a bite, so easy to yank your chain". I actually play a very minor role in trying to shape the future of this country. Which I would suggest is demonstrably better than throwing them from the sidelines as you do. Which is known in the business as "commenting from a sedentary position". ..with the added caveat that politicians both sides of the pond have their own agendas. So where does that leave the citizens of those nations? Wow, that's gotta be a first. An admission that one is amongst the top 5 trolls. Thanks for your honesty :) |

..with the added caveat that politicians both sides of the pond have their own agendas. So where does that leave the citizens of those nations? With a ballot box to make their views known. I take it that you're up amongst the top 5 then! Thank you for the compliment! |

If the UK hadn't been involved India, do you think the US have won the War of Independence. Maybe you ought to be giving thanks to the Indians. |

Not quite fair Bob, it gave us Schweppes Indian Tonic Water and IPA, it wasn't that bad! Anyway, it was all about trading via the East India Trading Company, and and the Tea clippers, and the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Nothing to do with uncivilised. Good Lord, they gave us Tiffin! Oh and by the way, my maternal Grandfather served in the UK forces in India 1920-30. |

No we still have respect for them. I for one will still stand alongside a Yank. However, don't expect me to put up with their overbearing arrogance 24/7. If we are arrogant we got it from the english. Who else would conquer India on the grounds that they were uncivilised. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

As a US citizen, all I'll say is some USA bashing is fully justified these days. As a UK citizen, all I'll say is some UK bashing is also fully justified these days. With the caveat, that it is sensible and backed up with reasons. The problem that seti has with its boards, is too many trolls pursuing their own agenda, and we all know who the prime dozen candidates are. If they were to go, the place would be a lot quieter, but maybe a bit boring. So what do you do? |
