I still have this happening about once a month. Last instance today. The computer sits at home working on its own, with nothing special going on in any way. Then this happens:

All my 200 tasks have been abandoned at 14:19:11 (12:19:11 UTC).

This time it happened on this host.

This is a minor annoyance, but it's been happening on and off for about a year, so I guess it ought to be fixed soon.

Did you make some changes? You're showing some new valids and pendings today, and no new abandonments (so far).

I had to turn off all web traffic control in my antivirus. I tried to add in exclusions list some seti domain names which I got from config files , but seems it was not enough. I'm thinking to put Kaspersky on my laptop and old antivirus software back to my desktop. At least it worked before no problem.

Don't worry about web sites, go into the preferences and block Kaspersky from scanning C:\ProgramData\BOINC, when virus scans are running they can block BOINC from writing to that folder and sometimes crash the executable.

Tasks in progress are work that has been sent to you and you have not processed yet.

Does the status change from "In progress" to "Completed, waiting for validation" right after you send result back or it takes some time (interesting how long)?

When the task completed is sent back to the project one of three things happens. If your wing man has reported it it will match and be validated or not match and both your task and the wing mans task will be marked as inconclusive and then the task will be sent out to 3rd wing man to then see if it will validate against either. The one that does not match will then be marked as invalid. How long it takes depends upon the wing man.

It changes immediately when you report the completion with a scheduler update - not with the upload. If BOINC is not updating, do a manual update and see if the ones you have crunched show up. I've only seen 1 in 2 days, and it has purged now. And see if the event log is showing that completions are being reported.

Edit: there are a lot of abasndoned tasks yesterday. The one I saw validated.

Also, how does your count of tasks actually on hand in BOINC compare to the website total in progress?

Yeah, I was probably little bit fast with my conclusions. Because now I remember that I was doing some computations before with another computer with Kaspersky and didn't have any problems.

I still don't know if my issue is completely fixed. I don't have "Abandoned" tasks anymore but I have growing number of "in progress" tasks. I'm puzzled. If these tasks were finished on my PC and results were send back to SETI@ server then why are they still "in progress"?

Regarding Kaspersky... I'm on Kaspersky Pure 3.0 on 4 computers. On one of the computers I installed BOINC and set up SETI after Kaspersky was already on the machine. I haven't had any problems with the two playing together.

On my laptop, BOINC and SETI were there first, then Kaspersky Pure 3.0, and again, they play nice together.

I even have Spybot Search and Destroy 2.0 on all of my computers, and still no issues... So, I'm unsure how you could have installed Kaspersky "wrong"; however, if you've made changes to Kaspersky, I hope that takes care of your issues.

So I know the source. My problem is I didn't setup my antivirus correctly. I still don't know all details but I know for sure that if I turn off Kaspersky I don't get "abandoned" tasks. Right now I've changed some settings and permissions and turn it on again. May be need to play little bit with settings so I don't expect it will work right away.

Richard, about communication problems and Internet connection, I didn't see any problems with upload/download in recent weeks/months. So my cable Internet connection is pretty much stable, it doesn't have great upload speed its about 0.36 Mbps but its ok (I use download most of the time and it is about 20Mbps which is good :).

The problem is less likely (we think) to happen at the uploading/downloading stages, and more likely to be at the reporting stage.

A good report looks something like

all done and dusted in about 3 seconds (perhaps longer if you have more work to report). If there's a longer delay between "Reporting" and "request completed", or if you see an error or timeout after the initial "Reporting", those would show most light on the problem.

The only big difference is that I installed new Antivirus software (Kaspersky) of that machine about 20 days ago.

The first abandoned tasks shown were reported September 4, so there could be a problem. I'm not familiar with that AV software, but with most AV's you can specify some directories to exclude.

Well, didn't look in it for years, but it seems ok, same "requesting... sending...started... finished..." , no word about errors or something abandoned.

I checked the link from Richard's post. May be he is right may be something going on at my ISP side... Can't say anything for sure now.

Wiggo, stderr doesn't show anything and this just adds confusion. I select the "abandoned" task and "stderr output" part is empty. I know for sure it works cause I checked it before, but not this time. I don't even know where to start to dig the problem :)

We have had a small number (rare, sporadic) of reports of errors like these - see the other thread on this subject, Abandoned tasks - Ongoing issue.

I did try to write up a description of the problem for the development team on Friday last week - oops, Friday 13th, maybe that's why I haven't got a reply yet. The developers are also busy preparing for a conference in Europe next week, which will be taking a lot of their attention: that's a more reasonable explanation for the lack of response.

But getting access to as much information as possible on the circumstances of the error will certainly help, and give me a useful excuse for nudging them when they get back. So, please unhide your computers as Fred describes, or at the very least gives us a link to the HostID of the machine in question.

So far, the problem seems to be most commonly associated with poor, or unusual, internet connections. Did you notice any communications problems around the time this happened?
