Speaking of bugs and glasses...

I was driving in Germany one fine spring day (or early summer - I don't
really remember). It was such a nice day that I rolled my window down.
As I was driving, a bee flew in through the opened window and smashed
on my glasses (left eye). It was pretty gross. But it could have been much
worse, of course. I thank God I was wearing glasses.

Take your prescription for lenses to COSTCO. They seem to have the best price; they do contact lenses, too.

Hmm, didn't think of that. I was about to go to Pearle.

Wrapping up being off my own topic, I went to Pearle, picked out some frames I kind of liked, walked out on the excuse that I didn't have my credit card with me (I didn't; I went back home and, with a huge sigh of relief, found it, my driver's license, my Blue Cross card, and an SD card from my camera in the bottom of my clothes chute), then went to America's Best (despite not liking my experience there several years ago) and spent about half as much as I would have at Pearle.

Okay, back to the bugs.

Wow, just think what a thing like that
would have to pay for corrective glasses.....

Speaking of which, I should start checking out the ads for new glasses. See who has a good price and I'm not pissed at.

I'll have to check that out TL4, though the nearest Costco is about 45 miles from Me, it's that or Walmart.

Vic,

I think you have to be a COSTCO Member to utilize the services for their glasses. Are you a COSTCO Member? I know David is; and, so am I.

Membership is about $50/Yr; however, if you get your food from them, (and other bulk supplies), it makes up for the $50 quite fast. Executive Membership is $55/Yr. I'm on the Executive Membership under my dad's business.

Also, because you want to build credit, if you become a COSTCO Member, you can apply for the American Express Card through COSTCO, (they always have table with a representative to fill out apps.), they may only give you a small credit limit; however, it still allows you to build a credit rating. My limit, (because of a bankruptcy in 2007), is $700.

OK, enough "off topic" talk for now... ;-)

Don't have contacts, don't really want them. Too much hassle and I'd probably give myself an eye infection.

Hahaha! Too funny, I have actually done that - insectacide, but it didn't *pop* just fell off and rolled around until I squashed it, Bloody Mess!

weak proboscis perhaps? :)
(that was a very good turn of phrase Vic - insectacide :))))

I don't advise it with West Nile and other nasty deseases around these days.

Wise thinking. A killer whale died of west nile in 2007 I think it was :( a very sobering thought.

Oh and thanks for the condolense, but it was not a loss, more of a learning experience. Live and learn ;-)

I was sympathising more with your bank balance losses :) Glad you're not still being bled dry :)

If they do land on you; you may touch their backs, but NOT their heads. Their necks are VERY fragile, and even the gentlest touch to the head will snap the neck, and the head will fall off.

I had this happen when I was a kid. It was shocking and creepy, because the body didn't die right away, it kept moving. For some reason; during the mating ritual(s), the female will eat the head of the male, and the body will continue to "PERFORM" until sex is done. Again, shocking, and creepy.

Is that unique to this type of mantis, or does that apply
to all of them? I've never touched the head of one of
the types of mantis we have here. I've just never thought
about doing so, nor have I ever had a reason to.

All of them I'd think, it's like the Red Queen said, 'off with their heads'(Alice in Wonderland)...

Intriguing discussion, reminded be of an x-girlfriend, but it turned out she was more like this...

We parted ways when I was much poorer, but a lot wiser ;-)

:( I'm sorry to hear of your... um... losses, mrperk... :)

Tip: (I have never done this, but I watched someone else do it) if you catch one sucking on you... tighten the skin either side of it's mouth parts and it can't pull out. It gets stuck in suck mode and explodes. Bit gruesome but not prosecutable... I think :)

That would be insectacide... :D

She WAS a right ... um ... er... anger management candidate wasn't she :)

TL - were you the kind of child a parent dreads taking into a china shop? :)

If you're patient - they will explore a proffered finger with their mouths - but no, it never occurs to me to touch anything that looks delicate Suzie either - much nicer to watch them land then move their bits around by themselves - they're much less likely to get dismantled that way. :)
