After a very long time, i'm finally back in 'fighting shape', or rather, my computer is. Tests confirm i'll be able to crunch.. i'm trying to get my friend andrew into crunching... but i dont really know where to start.. he's a technical guy and is slightly (very slightly) interested in crunching.. i plan on going back to SETI@HOME and COLLATZ, mostly because i liked their communities. how are things these days guys?

TL;DR: Im back, hi to every one and..
how could i get my friend who has a monster machine interested into seti?

very happy to be back
will

Hi William, welcome back! :-)

I too, took a LOOONG break; and am back. :-) I've been crunching about two months now; maybe just a bit under that...

As for getting your friend interested, just tell him what distributed computing is about, and then have him browse the Threads of the Cafe to get a sense of the community.

I was introduced to SETI by a friend who used to crunch SETI Classic in 1999. I didn't have high speed internet back then; I was on dial-up, so it took me several years before I began crunching myself - but, I was hooked based on what I saw my friend doing.

Will, I also took a bit of a hiatus myself, but I'm also back and crunching again. Mostly because I recently got a new laptop that crunches 4 WU's at a time now (my iMac only does 2 at a time & my old laptop only did 1).

glad to see so many back :)
i personally am pushing 6 sse units and one cuda.. tho i do have it on no new tasks, but that is because they gave me too many to start with! lol. i'm starting easy, 50 seti/50 collatz. i dunno my pc seems to do collatz better, so i do them from time to time. so far my temperatures overnight for the last two days have said the same thing: 67F idle 105F full load overnight Gpuid reports 106f idle and 125f full load :D.. i'm very satisfied with these numbers, and i'm about to overclock this thing a bit more. i still haven't talked andrew into crunching.. i'm working on it.

oh i definitely agree with that, hahahaha. when i first started hal and a few of the mods helped me figure out a problem i had with 64 bit seti.. i wasn't getting my full oomph until we figured it out. i liked this community. the last time i was here i was single and had only met my wife. now i have two kids, and this computer build i have now is getting ready to be upgraded. i plan on going amd again ofc. my current rig: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1189365
my NEW rig will be a bit of a beast with a titan and 32gb of ram with the new fx chip in it. actually perhaps i should ask here.. i'm thinking about upgrading and when i do, i'll need a new gpu... anyone have any tips? should i go 660 (i cannot afford a titan hahahaha, it was mostly a joke) or 760? my friend has a 560 with a liquid cooling setup he wants to sell me for 150.. what do you guys think?
any one can chime in here, but nvidia enthusiasts might chime a little louder, hahaha.

You should ask these questions in Number Crunching, but I think the gist of the advice, at least concerning nVidia cards, is that a 6xx will do the same work as the same number 5xx, but use less power to do it. There has also been a lot of trouble with 560 Ti's spewing errors if they don't have the proper drivers, get hot, or it's a day with a y in it.
