Got it. Let's see who else can get it. (^8 I'm not a seafood eater. I would like to know if this device really does make a difference. I know it makes a big difference with other edible creatures. ... |

I tried searching for what the clues seem to be pointing toward, and found this: It's kind of how this thread is making me feel. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Just to review some of the clues. Exoskeletons are involved, ie, crustaceans which are not fish. The latest pic of the device shows a setting for lobster and crab. Salt water is involved because electricity is not conducted through fresh water very well. No cooking is involved. A posh cook uses one in the kitchen of his very posh restaurant in France. flaming balloons |

I would've thought that the larger picture would've given it away immediately. :-o Cheers. |

Off the wall guess: does it electrocute the critters on the theory that that's less cruel than dropping them alive into boiling water? David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

Yes, yes, yes! Well done N9JFE This is what it is: It's "a professional appliance for killing shellfish – compassionately and without suffering. Shellfish are fully stunned into unconsciousness in less than half a second. Lobsters and crayfish die within five seconds and crabs in less than ten seconds. The process is simple: place the shellfish on the tray in the saltwater tank and press the stun button. In seconds the shellfish is dead and ready to cook." You can read about it here message on the way to N9JFE flaming balloons |

Does anyone know if the taste and or texture change? Or from the other direction not change? I can easily taste the difference in other meats. Instant dispatch is the only way and it tastes best. ... |

Yes, yes, yes! Well done N9JFE Of all the silly... Yay me! Oh wait, this means I have to find the next one. <sigh> I'll get to work on it. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |

When crab or lobster are just tossed live into the water, they(not surprisingly) dirty the water.. which becomes part of the seasonings. The difference in taste is not your imagination. Janice |

No thanks I'll pass on that. Dirty the water indeed. LOL!! Hopefully they change the stun box water frequently also. LOL! I thought I read where Julia Child just whacks them on the head before dunking them. It also saves from boiling water being splashed on you I've been told or read. I might try one properly dispatched now that I know the difference but it still looks like a big insect. Thanks for the sharing. That was a neat tool to go chase. When I stumbled on to it I thought it was a joke till I read it all. "Mystery Kitchen Tool" - yummm! ... |

Alton Brown once demonstrated a technique just posted by Janice in a new thread, so I edited it out of here. New tool coming up soon. Okay, here it is. As you can see, I've edited the picture; I hope that's allowed. There are still clues that I didn't edit completely out. David Sitting on my butt while others boldly go, Waiting for a message from a small furry creature from Alpha Centauri. |
