I was just curious to know if any of the UK volunteers on this board have approached the UKSRN (either formally or informally) about the possibility of a UKSRN@home application. Having an alternative seti app may prove beneficial towards load sharing, outages, etc., rather than relying solely on a single project (it's about reducing what could be construed as a single point of failure from the volunteer's perspective).

I've not done so yet. It would be nice to have our own @Home grown project to donate spare flops to. But I'm not really in a position to start nudging the PTB.

Len, thank you. It would be good to have an alternative to Berkeley.

cheers

Yes, provided they accept the paradigm of Distributed Volunteer Computing and the pain connected to providing an executable for every possible HW/SW combination, or taking the road traveled by CERN with a Virtual Machine solution like they do in Test4Theory@home.

It's a shame that the "Parkes" venture, that was promised a few years ago, didn't happen. :-(

Cheers.

I suppose "politics" comes into why we can't "piggyback" of the data. :-(

Cheers.

Yes, it is a shame about Parkes but what we need is some diversification on the supply side in looking for ET.

I personally am hoping that we see an SKA@home and an ASKAP@home. These will cover the southern skies which we are not doing at the moment.

cheers

I have contacted UKSRN. Whilst they are in the early phases of their thinking and any data collection is some way off, a BOINC application like seti@home is most likely going to be part of their thinking. I feel that it would be good for such to be developed as it would give some of us an additional Seti programme to crunch for and provide the volunteers with an apparent alternative application and data (for this type of activity) in the event that one project goes down for some reason or another...and as we all know, processing power is increasing and we may need more than one of these types of projects up and online in order to keep crunching 24/7...

cheers
