I don't know which scenario I fear more. A terrorist organization planting a bomb that kills and maimes thousands of innocent people or governments who in the name of safety for the masses record as much personal data as they can collect on all of us. I just try to push to the back of my mind those fears and live my life the best I can. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. Now that is an excellent statement. However, with that amount of data available, there has to be an extremely tight oversight as to who, how & why the data is made available. It's no good just relying on the courts to grant access, I'm talking about the departments that are maintaining that data. Examples: - Several years ago, BA employees were logging the details of passengers going on holidays & passing the details to colleagues in crime - results, passengers return home to find their homes burgled. Civil Service losing disks with over 25,000 files of Child support info M.o.D staff losing/leaving laptops in taxis/trains DVLA losing (which still annoys me to this day) hard drives sent to the States (WTF for?) & there has been many similar cases....so Catch 22 Which came first? The chicken or the Egg? |

Fair Dinkum cobber, however, I point you to this: - Message 1379172 No matter how any nation secures its intelligence, they all have the same common weakness...... see above link. |

No amount of pledges to be good works. No amount of criminal penalties will stop it. The thing that can work is to prevent anyone who handles the data from being able to make a copy of the data. And anyone includes the highest mucky muck all the way down to the janitor. No way to attach anything to those computers. No cameras in the building. No internet to the building. No photocopiers in the building. No printers in the building. Prevent any avenue for wholesale copying of the data. Strip search to get in or out. This is the spook business, you trust no one. |

Wiki is not very good as a source Chris. Wiki is frequently riddled with errors and outdated information. Wiki was that out of date ... wow I still maintain, that in this terrorist riddled world of ours in the early 21C, I would rather have National Security at least trying to keep tabs on the bad guys. If that means my details also get sifted, then I will reluctantly accept that as the price to be paid for hopefully a safer world to live in. Those that disagree can continue with their angst and paranoia, and getting a crick in their neck from constantly looking over their shoulder. So sorry mate. So sorry you have to have someone else look over your shoulder for you. That you have to carry papers all the time. That you have to be strip searched all the time. That you have to be watched every moment. That the queen has to go through your dirty laundry. To allow some terrorist to have that control over you, my god man, why do you want a slaves life? Obviously the terrorist have beaten you; you might as well study the Koran. Me, I don't care. I refuse to live the life of a coward. I'm not going to do one damn thing different. The terrorists are not going to control me in any way. If they finally do enough to get me mad, then they won't have their world. I'm not going to permit survivors. And you should be happy there are people like me in the world. Otherwise the rest of you can go back to sleeping inside the walls of the city controlled by the robber baron in your dark ages life. |

Spot on! however, will that data be acted upon? After what happened here just under an hour ago, I don't think so. For past several months, there has been a new resident in the next block of flats who has been giving everyone sleepless nights with his druggie music. It has been constantly reported with nothing done. Until now as they will have to act. All residents of both blocks were loudly disturbed by knocking on doors. On opening door, there stood 3 Armed police officers looking for the bugger as he was seen running amok between both blocks as well as the campus entrance with a machete - total there were six vehicles involved with shedloads of coppers. & just in case Sir Humphrey butts in about believability , Taffy, just contact Cambridgeshire Constabulary Control Room about an armed response unit attending Dogsthorpe, Peterborough! The authorities were informed as well as the police with nothing done - so it looks like someone has to be injured before any action is taken, in which case, why all that data required in the 1st place - I mean police often call & rely on the publics help, but when we need it? |

Wiki was that out of date ... wow Saying the law was changed and Wiki still had the old law as fact. So sorry mate ...... You are letting fear control and run your life. You want to run to mommy, hide under her skirt and have her protect you. Time to leave the nest man. There is a life out there waiting for you to seize. It can be a wild ride but it will be fun. |

All you have to do in the USA to get top secret access is get elected to congress. My older brother, while a G2 officer in the Navy serving in the DC area, saw on numerous occasions congressmen or their aides walking around the Capital with folders stamped Top Secret under their arms. Acquiescence by Ego, Pride, Vanity, Complacence or Trust and You Share in The Bloodletting of a Successful Plot and the Victory of a Successful Thwarting. May I ask why you are comparing Assange and Snowden? Snowden should be compared with Ellsberg. Assange with Neil Sheehan. |

Well.......it appears that we are at a crossroads then. Do we wish to maintain our liberty and freedoms and take the additional chances that may entail in dealing with those who would take them from us? And that means from within or without. Or do we wish to suckle the tit and cuddle ourselves in our blankets, given to us by our government, to let them watch over us forever after and without limit? Watching us even as we sleep, wiping our bottoms, and spanking us if we do something THEY do not deem as appropriate. I'd much rather take my chances, being well armed, against the terrorists. Because, and I don't remember the origin of the saying, but........ 'Once you give someone else the reigns to your horse, you no longer own him." The time has come now, friends, when we must finally decide who owns the horse. We indeed, do have the title, but let's not give up the reigns. Do you wish for the rest of your lives to ride, steer, or shovel? "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |

Edit: update on the machete idiot - we've been informed by the housing association who were in contact with the police.... Has there been an arrest for the person who falsely reported a machete to the police? |

A lot of people have said Assange should be tried as a traitor (Americans ) Assange broke no US law in relation to Wikileaks that I'm aware of. Interesting to see that the EU wants to hang the FISA court and the NSA under EU rules for collecting data on EU citizens from US soil. Are they saying the US should be able to try Assange? Interesting double standard. Now as to Snowden / Ellsberg, IIRC Mr. Ellsberg faced 115 years, but for tricky Dick's ego, he would likely be rotting in a cage today. So when the huge number comes out for Snowden, it will have precedent. Never mind the Rosenberg's. Manning is a bit different. He did it while wearing the uniform. Pretty much an automatic 10X on the sentence. |
