Message 1378123 - Posted: 7 Jun 2013, 16:37:17 UTC - in response to Message 1378112.

'Power, corrupts and absolute power........'. Sadly, all too many people, feel that if they've done nothing wrong, that they have nothing to fear. Wrong. You have everything to fear, because those rights you thought you had, were 'over-written' by yet another piece of legislation that was 'rubber-stamped', without any regulatory body (an ideal), even being mentioned. This is digital information; a type of information that lends itself readily to 'manipulation'. Another argument is that 'It is only 'photo-shopping', with another name, so what have you to fear from that? The real Kate Moss, looks nothing like her pictures and nor does J-Lo.....thats the issue; the data is manipulated to 'fix' the 'problem' and to make it look as though it is fixed!

In the mean-time, everyone has had their lives disected and analysed, so that someone, paid by your taxes can say that they did their job....unknown by you. How come there is never greater scrutiny of what our politicians are doing and why?

2 things:

1) While I have nothing to hide I am concerned about the blanket authority to do this to all providers.

2) A news broadcast on the radio last night said on the radio the wiretapping was originally approved in 2007. Unknown on source. If the date was accurate it's not Obama to be blamed for the start of it. That would fall squarely on George W Bush.

Don't dare try to defend flipping Obama on this one.
Yes, we know where the origins of it are.
But GWB is not in power any more, now is he?
The one in power has control and has to take all responsibility for what goes on under his watch.
And there are many illegal, arrogant, and self serving things going on in this administration.
If Obama and his ilk thought what started under GWB was so dang bad, they could repeal those laws and scuttle those programs and cut the government branches that are responsible.
But, no......
They are just as happy as pigs in shit to continue to advance their corruption and smile like the devil when folks like you blame it on Bush.

I'll say it again. The judge that signed off on this has a lot of explaining to do.

The order was signed by a special court known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court which operates under very different rules from a typical court. Probable cause is not required. The court was created in 1978, known as FISA, and the judges are directly appointed by the President of the U.S. to hear secret evidence and to authorize wiretapping, search warrants and other clandestine efforts to monitor suspected or known spies and terrorists.

It was Judge Roger Vinson who authorized the NSA to sieze the phone records under a provision in the USA Patriot Act (passed shortly after Sept 11, 2001), section 215, known colloquially as the "library records provision" because it allowed the government to order a wide range of documents, including library records. Under that provision, the government must show that there are "reasonable grounds to believe" that the records are relevant to an investigation intended to "protect against international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities."

Exactly what "relevant" meant has been unclear.

Every one of our elected officials on the Hill have known about this for a long time. Every one of them should be tried for withholding information from the American public about such a broadly interpreted law (that we allowed to pass) and possibly tried for treason (Dems and GOP alike) for crimes against the innocent and violating our liberties.

Every American should be outraged by this, in my not so humble opinion.

Obama signed an order to continue the surveillance, and his Administration has defended the surveillance of the American public as necessary. This position is very concerning to me. He is just as guilty on this as W.

Just wait. Then you'll have the combination of the CCTV surveillance we have in the UK, coupled with the snooping of the NSA.....then they'll say, 'there is a Machine.....'.

If nothing else, we've proved we can think what politicians will do, as opposed to should....now, as to the computing power used......

The 'remotes' or drones exist and the huge volume of information exists. We really need to reign-in our politicians. Strictly speaking, it was the politicians, who squandered Billions, as well as The Banks - name me, one politician who paid-up, in full, for their mistake! Its a very short list, consisting of no names - none of them were to blame, apparently. Instead, they choose to further put us under their yoke....we, the people. Yes, that last sentence was designed to provoke...as it should do. Without the 'people' behind them, they are the nothings, that they should be.

I wonder about that myself.
In the list of Top 500 Supercomputers there's no mention of the NSA, CIA, or Homeland security with even 1 Supercomputer.
The DOE and NNSA seem to have their fair share, but are they just a front?
Every time a new Supercomputer gets built are there 1,2,3 clones built in secret behind a mountain of paperwork?
The Utah Data Center is a high visibility project that will store data.
There's no mention of how the data will be mined.
For data to be useful and relevant real time processing needs to occur.
Are we all just mushrooms "kept in the dark and fed manure"?
