This has been going on for a long long time. Know people who rent space on their building for cell sites. After they had the contract with the wireless carrier they got a government official visit that they had to find room for one more antenna, the NSA one. It is to track the movements of every cell phone. It just listens to your cell phone ping the command channel but they get a real good idea on your movements from this. Now add this to every phone number you call, cross check this with credit reports (another free to the government FISA database) and now they know who you are, who you talk two, where you are ... . Now they can figure out who your ISP is and then match that massive data haul to you. They will know before you do the next time you are going to fart.

I don't want them collecting this data to begin with. I doubt it can be stopped. What may be able to be stopped is allowing the government to make a backup. Once there are backup's there is no way to ensure the data gets erased. And all this massive collection must have a time limit on it. Older than 90 days, sorry, data erased. Or you go get a real named individual warrant from a real court. But they should never get the data in the first place.

While the guys in office today may be okay, and that is debatable, they aren't Joseph Stalin or Pol Pot. Can you imagine one of them with the data pile? That is why is must never ever be allowed to be collected. Can't be sure who the heck may get in office down the road.

I worked for BT for 22 years and I can assure you the government were recording exactly who they wanted when they wanted back in the 70's. We had a far right wing organisation called the National Front who reported faults on their phone line just to get the bug removed for a while. Once the system fell down and I was given the fault to investigate in the exchange. I discovered and extra pair of wires going to a concealed black box under the main frame. On reporting this to my boss I was told to forget it. Next day the black box was gone.

The only upside is that apparently in the US three billion phone calls are made every day which breaks down to 34,722 per second, the best they could do is scan the conversations for tell tale words,which apparently terrorists no longer use, or just keep the records until something happens, then go back and see if there is any evidence.

The advance in all things IT actually means we now have almost no privacy compared to just a few years ago. The best way to avoid this is only make a phone call from a pre paid cellphone, then burn it. Have no online accounts at all, destroy your computer/smartphone/iPad/android tablet, with a large hammer. Oh yes and don't go anywhere that has security cameras.

As to this keep the data crap you are saying, the ends do not justify the means. Little if any FISA material is admissible in a criminal court in the first place. So that is never a reason to collect the data.

The leaked document first reported by the British newspaper the Guardian gave the NSA authority to collect from all of Verizon's land and mobile customers, but intelligence experts said the program swept up the records of other phone companies too. The possibility of a third secret program letting the NSA tap into credit card transaction records emerged late Thursday in a report in The Wall Street Journal. The White House did not immediately respond to an inquiry about that program.

At the same time, Clapper offered new information about the phone program and another one that collects the audio, video, email, photographic and Internet search usage of foreign nationals overseas who use any of the nine major Internet providers, including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Yahoo and others.

2 things:

1) While I have nothing to hide I am concerned about the blanket authority to do this to all providers.

2) A news broadcast on the radio last night said on the radio the wiretapping was originally approved in 2007. Unknown on source. If the date was accurate it's not Obama to be blamed for the start of it. That would fall squarely on George W Bush.

Indeed, Bernie, for years there has been a facility on UK soil, operated by the US Government that taps into UK comms. At one point, years ago, in the 'subject matter' line in e-mails sent between myself and my Uncle in Australia (who was also aware of 'goverment-backed' snooping on citizens) we used to put, 'To the NSA'. A facility of this kind is hardly what one would expect from an 'ally'! More to the point, is, any UK government that allowed it's construction and use and continued use, is not one that we can trust. Yep. Thats all of them!

I'll say it again. The judge that signed off on this has a lot of explaining to do.

Also, an interesting aside. Since these wire taps are made only to find info on terrorism, I'd find it interesting if they heard anything about murders or drug deals and did they act upon any of those calls. Seems that they'd be forced to ignore anything other than terrorist related calls.

Another aside. Please help drive up the cost of business for the NSA. Use words like Secret, Bomb, explosion, conspiracy, clandestine, etc. as much as posible on your cell phones. Please help do your part in disrupting or at least make it more difficult for illegal wire taps
