Touting the Seti@home lively discussions and then telling people to jump ship because their discussions are too lively seems a bit irrational.

If you're feeling emotional about what is an intellectual endeavor a self time out may be in order.

Many here who criticise CreditNew do so in a rational manner with no taint of rancor.

Read the entire thread. See how many jokers actaully lambast the project and the Admins. If you want to leave beacuse of Credits then leave for the greener pastures. Im sure there is a project that will kiss your butt with sweet credit.

And many here, Do have rancor about credit new.

And many are unhappy about it, but will stick around for the more valid reasons for doing so.
But are still not overjoyed about CreditScrewed's obvious failure to deal with a major change in the project in a timely manner.

I know that Mark, We both have been around long enough to know that when ever a new version comes out this credit crap happens.
But I get sick of hearing how bad Seti is and the admins dont care, and other projects pay better credits.

Well, James....
Given the fact that you and I have been around and weathered more storms than some of the folks complaining the loudest, we should have thicker skins, eh?

I closed my 'what has your RAC done since' thread because it was just becoming a place for folks to continue to whine about what was already obvious.
When the thread was first launched, it was a valid question.

Personally I can't see Dr. Anderson paying any more attention to this than he did 18 months ago when he 1st introduced CreditNew and everyone's RAC's plummetted back then as it is again now.

Cheers.

The difference between now & then is that back then RAC eventually recovered- not completely, but mostly. This time around, i don't see any sort of recovery occuring without intervention.

No I speak for myself. And If you have a problem with my reposne, hit that red X and report me.

I would only ever red-X one of my own posts.

You're right seti@home has lively discussions second to none.
CreditNew is Boinc specific.
Many Setizens were with seti@home before Boinc was a twinkle in Dr Anderson's eyes.
If Dr. A. wants to use seti@home as the testbed for evolving Boinc a bit of proactive PR would go a long way.
As it stands now his approach is, to say the least, arrogant and condescending.

This is not language suitable for a moderator.

It can be acceptable (barely, and depending on the occasion) in a flaming discussion, which this is largely not (we are just debating what is happening), by a normal poster.

Not by a moderator.
Who, by etymology, should make sure spirits do not go too high. What you wrote goes in total opposite direction.

And no, I am not pushing the red-X.

But I want this not to be forgotten too quickly.

And I am not going anywhere. I stand here, as many others do.

Ditto

I, and many others, understand the frustration regarding the present situation.

But please let's be civil about this.

To me, at least, James' comment is much more civil than many of the comments made about the Project Admins and Dr. Anderson in the CreditNew and v7 roll-out threads......

Even thick-skinned rhinos get irritated if you poke at them long enough...

...
In the case of "the New Credit System" implemented by Seti, recognition of personal contribution has been reduced. At present, the indication is that recognition for effort is effectively half that of what it was prior to the new recognition system being employed.

Although a CreditNew design goal was to have credits comparable between projects, the implementation clearly hasn't achieved that. And the change from Sah Enhanced to Sah v7 seems to have demonstrated that even for very similar work the system doesn't stabilize at the same credit rate. Those are BOINC issues, and perhaps the close relationship between Sah and BOINC will allow improvements to flow back into BOINC.

What I see as a possible short-term improvement would be to recognize the contribution in a different form, RAC relative to the total project RAC. That way if the overall RAC declines by 50% and an individual's RAC also by 50%, it is obvious that user is still contributing as before. It would need to be scaled up more than just converting to percent, the current top host is doing about 0.1% of the total RAC and most hosts far far less. Users wouldn't be comfortable with scoring having a lot of zeroes after the decimal indicator. Then a name for that score is needed...
                                                                 Joe

This is similar to:
"BOINC World position based on RAC"
"Contribution to SETI@Home total RAC"

From another thread-
Don't want to tempt fate, but it looks as though mine might be slowing down. Instead of a power dive, it would now appear to be in freefall.

Turns out it was just a glitch- still in a power dive.

I'm trying to remember what my RAC was when I was crunching Classic SETI units on my Cyrix 120, the 486-33 and AMD 586s... for over ten years-worth of CPU time.

How did we used to keep score?

Anybody got any idea?

Anybody know how I can add that to my current points total?

IT'S IMPORTANT DANG IT !!!

If not, well... anybody got any Geritol?

It was done by work unit. I just found my certificate thanking me for my 1000th work unit from Jan 2002. Somewhere I have the paper work saying that I had just over 5000 classic work units done before they started the the cobblestone thing.

You can still see your SETI@home classic workunits under "Computing and credit" on your account page.

My score is 6,185 workunits and 78,169 hours CPU time.

Yeah, I know. I was trying to make a point about the Persistence of Memory and how what might seem terribly important now will become far less-so with the passing of a person's time.

It was a call to "important reality" in a time of "urgent emotionalism" using history as the teacher.

Good grief. I sound like a really bad, half-baked philosopher. I may not even rise to the level of half-baked. That whole idea is sort of like a big blob of raw dough, not baked at all. I knead to go away.

I was running up to 18 rigs back in the classic days, a 386, a few 486's, several P120-200's, a few K6's and the odd oddball CPU here and there.

SETI@home classic workunits 61,592

And here I thought my 94,000 hours was impressive.

Wow.

Now I feel so inadequate.

Thanks, Wiggo. I appreciate it. I think I just shrunk 2.54cm.

SETI@home classic workunits 204,777
SETI@home classic CPU time 995,447 hours

didn't have enough time to hit the 1,000,000 hour mark when Classic was shut down.....:(

You can deceive some of the people some of the time but you can't deceive all the people all the time

Add a IM a TV show a Freudian slip made here on the boards and well 2+2=4 not 3

Now piss people off and what is over look because people are happy and Bang all becomes clear and is not overlooked

Only those in the know will understand this post .

You can thank 1 person whom does not know for me keeping my cool .

Only those in the know , know what I did some time ago and the arguments I used , however when I make my mind up which I have not yet , well just hope I have decided to be nice and walk away

I suggest everyone else shut the hell up as this post is meant for 4 people only , piss me off and my mind will be made up

You can contact me and I am a reasonable man and I am prepared to talk it over .

Follow on report;
Seti Credit yesterday 12th June at 100,356,898 is only 68.24% of the average before V7 introduced.

I think this figure will still fall further as there is still V6 work reporting and I assume the AP work is still being done at the same rate.

On another way to look, anyone knows where we can find the number of Daily WU proceced by the entire SETI comunity? That could be an interesting number, my guess is now we all are making almost the same (or even more) number of WU/Day than before due the optimized apps. If that is true by the project perspective, if you look the science done, all is working fine. So the creditnew impact is only at our side, the "human factor" of the equation. It´s hard for us "humans" see our RAC falling. We all are trained to belive, more credit = more science = more performance but that could be not true for few weeks until creditnew tunes it´s statistics.
