Message 1388589 - Posted: 7 Jul 2013, 18:15:34 UTC - in response to Message 1388561.

Which is why I used the term tax avoidance - and yes, as I thought I'd noted previously, since so much of our tax code is written by lobbyists, there are myriad ways to avoid paying taxes while building up one's net worth.

That is why I suggested that at some point, as people become aware of what they just might see as the maldistribution of wealth, there just might be pressure to revise tax laws to address this, not only by changes in rates, but also by changes in 'tax favored' options.

In any case as none of these are evasion, you must accept that they paid 100% of their liability. You may think that their liability should have been different than what is called for in the tax code, but that is a different argument.

And we have one of the most ineffective leaders of all times.

If the leader has little ability to effect anything then what's the problem?

I think the point being made was that he is not a 'leader'. He is a dictator.

The same was said of Abraham Lincoln and quite probably a host of other Presidents. I suspect the label is as appropriate for the current holder of that office as it was for any the the previous holders.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ...

Anyone who happens to disagree with a leaders politics, is tempted to call them dictators. So what is new?

I believe that what is new is the arrogance and the extent to which he feels quite free to end run congress and do what he damned well pleases. Not that it has not been done before, I am sure. But not this brazenly and often.

In another thread you said:

But, you cannot deny, once you watch the whole vid, that Hoover, and then Johnson, were behind the shooting of JFK.

Are you now saying that Obama is more brazen in his alleged power grabs than the person you believe to be behind the assassination of his predecessor?

Unfortunately, the facts behind the assassination of JFK shall never be proven.

What Obama has done to push his agendas despite the will of the people or the power of Congress is all too often front page news. And he doesn't give a rat's petoot about anything that goes on other than in his own little self centered mind.

Lobbyists? Now you are discussing how we have elections and not taxes.

In any case why would you wish to punish everyone through inheritance taxes for a lobbyist who got through a credit for a guy making BarryAZ bobble head dolls? The loophole can only be used by him, so why tax everyone for it? Unfair?

Gary -- punish *everyone* -- did I suggest a $0 dollar limit for when inheritance taxes would kick in? Sounds a bit histrionic to me. If I suggested that, I retract that suggestion. If I didn't then your 'everyone' sounds a bit like a mirage -- perhaps that wasn't your intent.

As to discussing taxes versus elections -- you might be right there -- elections have an influence on tax bills that are passed and signed into law. That suggests that if we are to talk about taxes in isolation to tax bills we can then go inventing all sorts of ideal (or evil) scenarios.

Lessee, now where did I put those files?
Uhh....let me get back to you on that records request, eh?
(Snicker, snicker).

Bin Laden raid files reportedly purged from Pentagon computers, sent to CIA.

Everyone to whom it applies, no matter the starting figure.

If you wish to punish those that have lobbyists, write the tax code to say that.

Quite, and seems to be the norm of the discussion.

I might point out that "income tax" was invented in the modern world by a king that needed money to fight a war. No election was involved, he just convinced his peers that it was a good idea and did it.

In later years it has become fashionable for parties to offer all sorts of "tax bribes" to the electorate round about election time, and then to renege on the promised bribe a bit later on.

Ah -- OK -- then perhaps the only (or primary) function (or effect) of taxes is punishment. Fair enough. Let's eliminate all government revenue punishment. Of course then we should eliminate all expenditure as well. Oh wait, I think that might end up in bad places. <smile>.
