The _plan_ is for V7 to roll out (next) Wednesday.
The _plan_ is for the installer to follow the Monday after.

Oh, crap.
I'm going to be away from home starting Tuesday for about 10 days.
Bad timing, guys!

Not that I'm paranoid.

Ya think?

There goes the (my) neighborhood.

*sigh*

What I got out of it is this.
Those who have never given a rat's petoot about their rig's configuration should come out better.

Those of us who did might suffer a bit.

Isn't that the whole idea, SETI@Home should be set and forget, even if you have 4 GTX 680's and just want to run the the program.

The people who want more come here and know what is going on, so we might have a bit of work to do but we will know what and how and hopefully and nice side affect will be that all those Kepler cards will suddenly stop producing errors, won't that be nice.

I actually think it's a rather grand thing.
IF the servers can actually be smart about what they send to whom.
And the increase in capability given to set and forget users???
Wow. Auto opti...now that is really cool stuff.

What took me years to get right now will be sent to users everywhere.
Much praise to Jason.

Absolutely! Also to everyone else "getting it done."

I run three, or... right now, two, AMD cards and I can tell you that the lack of XP support isn't going to catch anyone off-guard. To do things the "easy" way, AMD made you switch away from XP some months ago.

For those who are kludging-together a combination of drivers and SDKs to keep their XP machines running (like me), we knew this time was coming. There's no problem with Win 7 or Win 8 (well, other than the fact of Win 8).

I've had two NVIDIA XP Pro machines choke on something in the latest NVIDIA drivers (nv4_mini.sys & a different file I don't recall), one running Keplers, the other with a Fermi.

I knew that the time was coming.

The question is: Do I spent $100 on Win7 OEM, or spend $240 replacing 6770 and 7770 video cards with 560Ti's which are pretty cheap if you can find 'em. Heck, I saw a 560Ti-448 for $179.00 recently.

What this is *really* doing is making me play around with Linux. I don't want to learn anything new, but hey, IF I could find a stable Linux version that is being supported and works without having to work a week to make it work, then "free" starts looking better and better. Unfortunately, I've had "disappearing" NVIDIA cards and multiple AMD drivers apparently without Open CL support. The search goes-on.

You'd think that as many BOINC guys run Linux that it would be a piece of cake. Maybe I'm really getting too old to learn. That's scary.

I'm waiting to see if I can get v7 to work *reliably* on several XP machines (NVIDIA and AMD). If I can, I'll probably turn-off all of the updating and milk them as long as I can.

An ASIDE: While anxiously awaiting v7 and a resolution to the caching trouble, I detached and removed and renamed app_info and all that other jazz, effectively halting my SETI production on most of my computers, and went over to Einstein for a bit.

Here's news: Einstein is running-out of CUDA work. It seems the Distributed Computing community is providing about 3x what Arecibo can provide for Einstein. They responded by building another application and have put CUDA cards to work on something else in addition to the Arecibo work. Now, it's cool that they'll be analyzing data real-time for all intents and purposes, but that's not why I mention it.

Here's why I mention it; the work is flowing out, the video cards are taking ten times as long to do the new work, it is getting returned, and the validators are off-line (last I checked).

So Einstein "pushed" a new app to people, sent them work, and can't / won't / aren't validating it (last I checked, some hours ago). I haven't noticed anyone going into hysterics.

Yet.

I'm looking forward to v7 being delivered, even if it isn't a perfect roll-out, so I can get used to it and set things up to "just work."

I'm with you, Mark. The changes we're seeing are "grand things." I'd like for them to get grander, quicker, but there is visible progress and that's a GRAND thing.

Fear not. They said they will be turning the validator on Monday because they want to keep an eye on it when it starts running for the first time

The validator is running now. Some tasks (430 of them) got a validation error and status 'unknown', but they have been set for a re-check. Bernd accepted my suggestion of 4,000 credits each.

I have been experiencing no problems here.

EDIT...
Oops. My bad.
I missed that you were all discussing Einstein, not Seti.

And I thought it was customary to release new apps on Friday afternoon and pack up for the weekend, letting the volunteers sort out the screaming...

That's the main reason we try to do installer releases early in the week - so we have all hands on deck to provide user support...
Not that it should actually _need_ the level of support we tend to provide.

Hey...
Is there any new info on the V7 release , as far as what us "Tech challenged"
crunchers should do to get ready for the V7 situation ?

Maybe links to what and where to get what we will need to keep up with the newer
programs ?

Is it still coming out tomorrow after todays downtime ( Tuesdays outage) ?

Inquiring ( Small and feeble) Minds want to know. ;-)

KISS? I can try...

If you are on stock -> do nothing, except to doublecheck that v7 is ticked in your preferences.

If you run optimised seti only on GPU and run boinc 7.0.64 -> go stock: run down your v6 cache, when empty remove app_info.xml, tick v7 and untick v6, reset project to get stock apps. Use app_config.xml to run several tasks at once.
[you won't get v6 resends, but you would be processing them with 6.08/6.09/6.10 which isn't really desirable (if you have an NV that is)]

If you are optimised and run CPU and GPU you can

a) go stock (as above) and patiently wait until such time as a Lunatics installer becomes available [ETA Monday after launch, provided I don't suffer a nervous breakdown before that] and then decide whether you want to optimise again NB only CPU apps are optimised at this point since the GPU apps delivered as stock are actually the optimised ones.

edit: be aware that you also (temporarily) lose the optimised AP CPU app, should you be running it.

b) wait paitently until the installer becomes available and hope there are enough v6 resends to keep you running, ignoring the protests of boinc about you not having a v7 app in your app_info.xml

c) cobble together your own v7 entries. NB AKv8b2 is NOT v7 compatible. you could upgrade your NV/ATI parts though. And patiently wait for the installer to become available to get the optimised CPU apps.

d) panic and demand an installer to be availbale from yesterday on, causing me to have a hissy fit and thus delaying installer availablity until somebody who has very limited time has gone 'there, there'.

I suggest sticking to options a) to c)

Installer availability will be announced through the usual channels.

LOL... I'm not sure where the --- "KISS? I can try..."
Part came in from , unless I did a serious typo... LOL
any way , I do have the opti apps on both CPU and GPU , so I guess I'll just leave the V7 unchecked until the apps become available . about Monday or so...and I don't demand anything from anybody ... LOL... so you won't have to worry about ME griping or complaining to you or about you either...
I appreciate all that you and the others who have the skills and knowledge to do what you do , do it on YOUR Free time , to help all of us do what we do. !!!

Thanks ( from me at Least ) for all your ( and Others ) effort to make things work so that we can work !

I was just trying to see if I missed something or needed to do something else to be ready for the changes coming.
Thanks again...

KISS stands for 'Keep It Simple, Stupid' - William was reminding himself to keep within your self-description of who wanted to know - and to write for the wider audience watching over your shoulder, too.

Actually, it's a good idea for everybody preparing for the v7 rollout too - from Eric downward. If you (or we) try to out-guess what will happen and when it will happen, Murphy's Law dictates that we'll end up with egg on all our faces. if you try to edit files to early or too quickly, for instance, the chances are that you'll make a mistake, and end up having to do yet more repair work before you're crunching smoothly again. Better to wait until the dust settles before you make any changes.

My rig isn't all that quick, relatively speaking, it takes around 3 to 4 days to empty the 100 each queue so I'm going to go b) and hopefully after 3 days we'll have hit most of the gotchas and stumbling blocks in the short term to decide where to go then.

A big +1 from the kitties for William and all the others who have and are putting in a lot of time on prepping things for this new step for Seti.

I think William forgot the first step:

Wait until v7 is actually out in the field, then....

It would be a shame to run caches down, edit files, then find a problem has delayed the release by a day or so and you've nothing to chew on.
