At one point I was stationed to the north end of Elsmere
Island in the arctic where there was only one local flight
per week. I must say it took over thirty years for me not
to look out the window whenever I heard an airplane over head.

Meanwhile, in Illinois, 1630 passed her hydro!!! One more inspection, and a lot of parts reinstalled, and then they can light a fire.

It's not quite in time for the big 60th Anniversary Extravaganza this weekend, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pull her out of the shop for people to see. The remaining work can probably be done as well outside as in. (Or so it seems to me, but I'm not working on it.)

Vic may be interested to hear that Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is considering acquiring a 2-6-6-2 Mallet, C&O 1309, from the B&O Museum for restoration and operation. Their current 2-8-0 could use a partner, as well as being due for rebuild at the end of the 2015 season.

I wish it was the H8 Allegheny 2-6-6-6 that's there instead, but some said restoration would cost about $1 Million for the H8, so the 2-6-6-2 would have to do, though it's a poor substitute...

Plus WMS needs something that will fit on the turntable at the end of the line. Apparently, the H-6 will, but the H8 not so much.

I'll match the Scotsman with the Blue Goose...

That looks quite good for an American loco, at least it doesn't have every bit of pipework stuck to the outside.

Notwithstanding American Muscle engines I would still submit that the Flying Scotsman takes some beating. Class always beats brute force.

Scotsman

What did you think of it in black?

I saw it live at the NRM and i liked it. Looked like a stealth loco.

I was also there in late 2005 when they brought it back to York just before its overhaul, it was a sorry sight, when it pulled up at York station it looked ready to fall apart. If an engine could limp, this was.
They've done a good job on it though, at the Railfest event they had last year, it could have been brand new.

Interesting, but it looks a bit plain. It needs some bits. A headlight and bell, at least.

I added 3 more today.

BTW, sorry Vic, but I don't like the Blue Goose. Just another example of streamlining added as an afterthought.

The Hawkeye Express engine has 3000hp.

Yes it does. It's a former Amtrak F40PH. The HEP uses up to 700 of that 3000 (probably not that much on those cars).

Illinois Railway Museum is making quick progress on SLSF 1630. I just read the Steam Department blogs for Sept. 14 and Sept. 21.

(Movie fans will get a bonus tid bit from the 14th.)

At first glance, this may look like it belongs in the train safety thread, but it really doesn't.

It's set to public, so you shouldn't need an account to see it.

I have other pictures from my DSLR that I will post to Flickr after I process them.
